Something that confuses me is why emphysema increases lung compliance. I get that reduced elasticity means it recoils less, but doesn’t that also make it more stiff and harder to expand? Also, in emphysema, don’t the alveoli collapse? So I don’t understand how there’s increased compliance in this case? Or does the collapse happen during inspiration, and so it stays inflated and doesn’t recoil back?
