CONCLUSION: So to wrap up this review, we give the Venus optics, compact dreamer, lightweight 7.5mm f/2 lens a 35.5/40 and our Recommended RatingTHE FINAL WORD: More often than not, wide angle lenses suffer from some inherent issues, weak edge performance, distortion, vignetting, and bad flare performance, well, I’m pleased to report that laowa does a great job with distortion control and edge performance, both seem to be really great as the verticals straight out of camera are in fact pretty straight and the edges look really sharp to my eyes, however, the laowa does suffer from strong vignetting - especially wide open and weak flare performance in brightly lit situations, which again aren’t really strong suits for most wide angle lenses, but they are noticeable in the Laowa - but all in, at just $519 the laowa does in fact offer some really nice benefits for this kind of price - specifically, if you’re a drone operator, video shooter and if you do real estate and landscape photography - sure, you only get manual focus and aperture control, but again, when it’s this wide, big scenes are going to be mostly in focus anyway at or close to infinity on the focus ring. In spite of its shortcomings, the pros, definitely outweigh the cons.

Great review. I am intrigued though for real estate why this would be better to carry with you than, say, the Oly 7-14PRO, especially as it looks like the interior work you do is on a tripod. Is one reason just down to the convenience of the smaller size?

Great review. I had this lens on my target for excursion I am planning to chase the Northern lights. My decision was to use a manual nikkor 20 mm2.8mm with the speedbooster 0.64. It is twice as long and much larger but I could get the Nikkor cheap as I already have the SB. Also I am getting THE Sigma 16 1.4 for MFT to fill the very low light needs.

Thanks for reviewing the lightweight version. I've been trying to find out of there are any drawbacks from the regular version, but from your review there doesn't seem to be any. I don't intend on getting an ILC drone anytime soon, but for only $20 over the regular price, why not take an extra 20 grams out of my camera bag. Besides, maybe someday I'll have the money and justification for interchangeable lens aerial shooting!

Very informative review. I’m looking to add this lens to my arsenal. The bonus is it will benefit my Inspire 1 & Inspire 2 drones plus my Olympus OMDEM1 Mk II.

I did add the 7.5mm to my arsenal and it is amazing. If you keep it level it is super rectilinear and amazingly crisp. I have one project where I can point it 90 degrees down and capture the entire project with no stitching then I print and mount it on a 24 x 36 foam core. The project mounts it on the wall and uses it during scheduling meetings as a very valuable tool.

Anyone have problems with this lens while handholding it on the GH5/s? Do you guys get the wobble effect in the edge of the frame? LIke a rolling shutter effect?

Thank you very much for your reviews. I like them very much. ImhO in some aerial videos, you show with this lens, it seems for me, that the side of the shots are blurred. What do you think. For me, the lens could be a great alternative to the big and heavy and expensive Olympus 7-12 2,8 lens. Best regards Andreas

On the left side in one of the aerial videos it is in fact a bit soft - I set the lens to f/2 and the building on the left was in the foreground and a bit out of focus - the other shots - the real estate shots in particular - to me are sharp edge to edge (f/4) as are most of the others, even at f/2.

the saturation on the areal shots are very unreal....it is a no for me.

pelulici There are various color profiles you can use on the Zen use X5, I typically use the “Vivid“ profile, which can in fact be a little bit - OK a lot - oversaturated. You have the option to use a less saturated profile.

"...and I'm still more than capable of achieving excellent results." That much is clear from the work you showed in this video. Stunning stuff! As a less experienced real estate photographer/videographer I must ask - why would I want this lens if I already have an Olympus 7-14mm F2.8 Pro (for my GH4)? As a prime lens, does this Laowa produce sharper images, or am I already getting the best quality I can in M43 with the Olympus? Thanks!

The 7-14mm lenses dont work on the Inspire because they are too wide to mount onto the camera, the gimbal body opening is too tight. Great review!

Hi Darren, great useful video..A question would you buy this Laowa lens over the Panasonic 7-14? I use Olympus and I have heard about the flare blobs the Pano can give if your not careful, on the other hand its autofocus and a zoom. I only want it for Architectural images and travel. Your comments as ever really appreciated..The Olympus cost wise is a step too far. From Cold and Snowy UK.

I think the laowa is a fantastic deal, if you are doing architectural photos, then manual focus isn’t that big of an inconvenience and with focus peaking at say F/5.6 or even F/8 the majority if not all of the scene should be in tack sharp focus. My first choice would be the Olympus, my second choice would be the laowa, and my third choice would be the Panasonic. Hope that helps!

Nice in depth review! The question is.... does this lens tempt you to move on your Olympus 7-14 ? Obviously for drone work - yes! The 7-14 is my go to for real estate. Not only does it perform brilliantly but it looks pro when my clients are checking out my gear

I love the 7-14 - and if I couldn't afford one, I could survive with the 7.5 - and I'd get the added benefit of being able to use it on my drone too... However, the 7-14 is better, and it's more versatile, you just can't stick it on a drone... Yet.... :-)

And the Laowa takes filters (and a couple came free with mine for being an early adopter). :P Well, atleast without the need for like 3rd party 3D printed solutions. Besides the Oly is a beast in size & weight. No comparison really. They are 2 different tools.

@@DeadMicLive Yes I purchased it and love it on my GH5s. It does give vignetting especially at maximum aperture but it is tolerable. I have no regrets, this is a high quality lens

It is! Turns out it's the fault of my Zenmuse gimbal, and not the lens. Lens is sharp enough edge to edge, especially stopped down.

Ionuţ Pădureanu if only I had the time, camera reviews take a ton of time and I only think it’s fair to use a camera for an extended period of time before you can really give an honest and thorough review. First impression reviews, in my opinion don’t have a ton of value. That said, I’ve been using the OMD EM 1 Mark II for about six weeks and overall I’m really really happy with it!
