This is one of my favorite matches. Venus was stunningly aggressive in this match. I love how she used to jump into swinging volleys like this. And I thoroughly enjoyed this broadcast with these two respectful commentators. It's unfortunately unusual to hear a male commentator be so positive regarding the Sisters and their father during their younger years.
Classic power v.s. finesse contrast. Hingis is one of the very few female tennis players that I'd smash. Straight take it from the back. The are basically 2 trains of thoughts on this; 1) Just look at it, her back side is by far her best wing. Her haunches are just pillars of strength. And a PERFECT @$$, not too big, just right.. 2) It keeps that face outta site. And far away from mine as possible. It s not the worst, I just don't want to look at that pie plate the whole time. I'm mean, I'll let her look back at it every once Ina while... It's masterful piece work. I'm impressed..
It breaks my heart that she spent so many years undiagnosed and fighting through her chronic Illness just not knowing why she had so many days where her body was in severe pain and sapped of energy. I remember commentators for several years in the mid/late 2000s opined that Venus lacked focus and determination. Not knowing her body was basically in self destruct mode every time her disorder flared up.
This is probably the match that eventually made Venus. Classic match with all sorts of variety and all-rounded play, which exceeds the 2005 final of neat baseline play. Hingis, instead of Davenport or even Serena, was the one that force out the extreme version of Venus.
I didn’t realise what a “grunter” Venus was. She is still my favourite Williams. So sad she suffered that illness. A truly regal figure in her prime. Got to give credit to the Swiss Miss too. No slouch at all.
I remember Venus saying something along the lines of "On paper Hingis is expected to win, but in reality I feel I can beat her" before this match. It really spoke to her confidence and how the summer of 2000 felt like a changing of the guard, with Venus about to hit the stratosphere as Hingis faded.
@@carrerau7138 Sure, but one match doesn't tell the whole picture. Hingis was done as a top flight, Slam-contending competitor after this. Her name would be in the conversation, but she would never go on to win another Slam.
@@deedledave9826 Hingis was still a top flight, slam-contending competitor - even though she didn't win another slam. She made 2 more finals and 3 more semis. She beat both Williams sisters at the AO 2001 for example - the "Williams Double" in a slam!
the match that made venus and believe in her strokes and net game. Too many QF and SF losses up until that point. AO QF 98/99 vs Davenport. FO 00 vs Sanchez Vicario W QF 98/99 vs Novotna & Graf respectively. US SF 98/99 vs Davenport/Hingis respectively. In all those matches she was a not a big match player having melt downs against Novotna at wimbly and Davenport at AO. The match that stung the most was against Hingis in the US Open, the serve went, cramps came and belief had faded. Interestingly Venus went into Wimbledon wanting the title more than anyone else and even bought her evening ball dress for the champions ball before the championships
A lot of those were against some very inspired opponents. Venus had less chances in 99' against Davenport and 00' against Arantxa. The rest, well, were just up to Venus though to close out matches well.
"wanting the title more than anyone else" those feelings were not unique and were shared by her rivals, no doubt about it. They were all here with the same expectations of glory. " and even bought her evening ball dress for the champions ball before the championships". Most certainly other challengers who felt they had a chance also brought along their own ball gown. They were not going to wait until the last day to find a dress. They're all a bit superstitious, and little symbols and gestures do count. All the top competitors had in common the same feelings and the same behavior. Nothing very special about Venus in this respect. What made her unique here was not psychology, but brilliance on the court.
Back then it was a big win for Venus. The way the family celebrated show all. Hingis was one of the sisters great rival in their early career. Hingis has 50=50 recorded against sisters( 5&6 and 12 &11 )
This match one actually does not see that much of it yet. The backhand DTL and ISO was almost the sole factor to turn the clock around in the 00' USO meeting with Hingis.
What a phenomenon! Venus ruled that court! She's so fast and flexible, that she seems to be the inspiration for Nadal, as she can run down the line or to the side to reach an impossible ball. She has inspired since I met her.
Hingis was never the same after the loss to steffi in the french open the year before she just gradually declined over the next few years , i loved the way she came back and dominated in doubles later on in her career .
She had reached several finals after the French 99 and plenty of SF and QF...it just so happened this new era added power to the games, the Williams sisters, Capriati, Mauresom, the Beglians and Russians, it was too much for Hingis.
@@carrerau7138 what delusional statement is this, Hingis was leading by a set..obviously the umpire, the fans, the referee and Steffi all ganged up on Martina..this umpire is useless from the beginning
@@angel91485 Many were leading a set in slam finals against the great Steffi. Ask Navratilova for example. Or Sanchez and Fernandez. There were a few close calls in this match, to BOTH players' disadvantage. Only Hingis wanted to make it all about herself again, that was her character. No one can actually PROVE that she was right about this infamous controversial point. And no one "ganged up on" her. Especially not Steffi or the referee. Hingis was a classless whiner who loved to play the victim. Steffi was the ultimate professional. And that's why the French love someone like Steffi and look down on someone like Hingis.
I remember Tracy Austin mentioning if Venus could clean up her forehand she would be lethal. Her backhand was always her bread and butter and her forehand was filled with errors. She really cleaned up her forehand that year and it showed by winning this Wimbledon and the USO.
I love Martina. Venus is athletic, so she is able to force wins. Martina is technically perfect. Probably the most technically perfect fel+mal tennis player ever.
I AGREE…With The Commentator; IT REALLY WOULD BE REJECTED…AS A MOVIE SCRIPT….as TOO IMPROBABLE!!! Yet, The SISTERS WILLIAMS, TENNIS ICONS, ACHIEVED IT!!!💗💗 They Are TRULY AMAZING! Serena & Ms Venus WILLIAMS! The Tennis GOATs.❤️xox
I don't think Venus was ever in a position to win that match against Graf. Venus was always playing catch up. It was a tough match, but Venus was never in any kind of winning position. Graf got the first break in the final set and held her own serve after that.
I think it was less about learning from the 1999 match, and more about just improving as a player since then. The Williams sisters hadnt reached their peak at the time, especially serena. Once they reached their best, we all know how dominant and groundbreaking they became.
Venus William's has one of the best served in Tennis History. Back in 2000 she deserved to win the tournament without dropping a set. August 2000 was a special moment in Tennis History. She was then 20 years old.The two sisters are way mature for their age.
WHAT A CLASSIC! Did every game go to deuce? So much awesome netplay, Hingis/Venus was my all time favorite rivalry in tennis. This was an incredibly important win for V, first time beating Martina in a slam, helped give her the confidence to win the tournament and then also in NY, beating Hingis in another classic semi. A few untimely errors in the 3rd for Hingis, and Venus played that last game like a Boss.
Great match, remember it well. Also, so good hearing John Barrett and Jana Novotna commentating. The commentary on the BBC nowadays really isn't great.
I remember seeing this match. I felt Martina was very passive n Venus was super aggressive which is better suited in grass court. Also I noticed Martina had no confidence it’s like she already decided she will not put effort n it showed during the match . She didn’t used any of her net skills n drop shots which a year ago Steffi Graf used effectively on key points against Venus. Venus played outstanding match n after this match she was the force to reckon
I can’t believe that this Venus won less titles than Serena. Maybe she’s less determined than the younger sister, but in order to have a glorious career she had to complete the career gran slam. It’s the least for his talent
Sjogren's Syndrome robbed Venus of her glory. She would have been as great as Serena if not more. Serena certainly wouldn't have as many slams as she does now. And definitely not more Wimbledons.
@@shngain100 How is an auto immune disease not an excuse lol. Don't forget she had issues long before she was actually diagnosed with Sjorgens as she was misdiagnosed years before.
Venus wasn't really serious when she was really good. she should have taken the 01 aus open and even at a stretch the 02 aus open (she had tendinitis) then she lost 1st round RG to Schett in 01. Then 02 RG she could have won if she really wanted to as serena was just warming up. but by wimbledon '02 serena was just too good. and then injury set in and she really was not the same, just patches where she won Wimbledon again. her time for winning multiple slams was between wimbledon 00 to wimbledon 02
Martina ( 11 ) Vs Venus ( 10 ).. Australia (1997 ) to US Open ( 1999 ).. Martina Won 5 Slams.. Runner Up.. French Open 1997 & 1999.. Never Won Singles Title in A Slam After that.. Youngest Number 1 at 16 Years and 3 Months.. Venus Won 5 Wimbledon Singles Titles..
Venus was even better than Serena. She is probably the player with the greatest potential ever. But somehow mental drawbacks held her from what she could be
At 1:28 Hingis takes her sweet time putting on her hat and getting up to the baseline to serve at the start of the third set. At 1:55, Venus is given a time violation warning. Interesting.
Should have been 6-3 6-4 if she made less unforced errors. Hingis could not keep up with them when the Williams were on and not making too many unforced errors even with all her guile and quick hands
They are mature with bravery, decency, dignity and fairplay. They are nt bigger than other players God hears the descriptive injustices coming from commentators mouths. Therefore, He is always there fot my beautiful princessea........Venus and Serena.
