"Messa da Requiem" by Giuseppe Verdi Joan Sutherland, soprano Fiorenza Cossotto, mezzo-soprano Luigi Ottolini, tenor Ivo Vinco, bass Philharmonia Chorus & Orchestra Carlo Maria Giulini, conductor Usher Hall, Edinburgh, 21.VIII.1960
I think this is the earliest recording of Giulini's Requiem we have, and the first in a great line of performances with the Philharmonia. [Technically, the 2nd since he performed it in London with the same forces 2 months earlier - not recorded!] Though Sutherland is the 'headliner', for me Cossotto is even more impressive - like Sutherland, an up-and-coming star in her 2nd year at Covent Garden at this point. The rest of the quartet are on fine form too (incidentally, Vinco was Cossotto's husband for 40 years), and they and the chorus are recorded well. The orchestral sound is a bit sull, sadly - but this is a fabulous performance & a terrific souvenir of the very beginning of the formidable combination of Giulini & the Verdi Requiem in the 60s. Thank you!!
