The Battle of Verdun which started in February 1916 was intended to 'Bleed France White' - and there were early successes by the attacking Germans. One of these was the capture of the French Fort at Douaumont.
The surprise capture of Fort Douaumont was as much a triumph for the Germans as it was a shock for the French. Its effect on the battlefield was immediate. For the next eight months the Germans fought to hold on to their prize despite constant bombardment, a devastating internal explosion and French assaults.
This presentation - at the WFA's 2023 AGM - by Christina Holstein describes the almost accidental capture of the most important fort in the Verdun system, what purpose it served and what it was like to be inside during eight months of battle.

I'm glad to see that the subscriptions are up by about 5k since the tube'y'all decided I needed to be watching what it wanted me to (not what what I had been watching), and erased my viewing history. it's been a good 3 month slog getting back to where I was.... however. enough of my griping. this was a thoroughly entertaining (which may be the wrong way to describe, arguably, the grimmest battle in the first two years of WW1) talk about what was, also arguably, the end of the beginning of WW1. Thank you Ms Holstein.

The depictions of this fort remind me very much of the Maginot forts. I guess there are only so many ways one can build a fort, eh?

How the British used our People for Cannon Fodder ?

Anywhere colonial troops fought, the British fought in greater numbers, both in absolute terms and proportionally. Deaths as percentage of population: Australian 1.2%, Britain 2.0%.

700,000 British dead vs. 60,000 Australian dead? Everyone was cannon fodder in the First World War. You’re not special.
