Little thing I noticed playing the set: you can see Hansel and Gretel being rescued in the art of Oakhame Ranger. They are the two humans the card's adventure creates.

So the (Curious Pair)'s (Trail of Crumbs) fails to guide them home. Starving, they find the (Gingerbread Cabin). After almost being put in the (Witch's Oven), they are rescued by (Oakhame Ranger). That's a fair few cards with elements of the same story.

For anyone wondering, the "Nun liebe Kinder..." at 0:35 originated from a TV show in Germany where "the sandman" tells a story for children, before they would go to sleep. The Clip he used is from a Rammstein Song (Mein Herz brennt) though.
@azuriel9292
@azuriel9292 4 года назад
Oh, and also the piano version of the song plays in the background if i'm correct. The song is based on the sandman and other stories/nightmares of children so that fits SO WELL IT'S MIND BLOWINg. Also i like the melody a lot so I'm super biased about how happy i am with this video. Thank you Rhystic!

It should also be noted that when he Grimm Bros. published the tales the Napoleonic Wars were reaching their climax. The Revolutionary Armies of France had been marched east across the kingdoms and principalities of Germany several times over the past two decades at this point and the armies if Austria, Prussia and Russia obliged by marching west across Germany. The countryside had been raided over and over and over again from 1795-1815 by hungry soldiers of every European power so it is not surprising that tales of hunger were popular; especially those where the villains receive their just reward. I can imagine many German kinder pictured Napoleon being pushed into the oven.

While I don't know how unique this theory is, I've always thought: what if the mother from the beginning was actually the witch? In a lot of interpretations she is simply gone, but many specify her as being dead. She was wanting food just like the witch, and itd be convenient to send those kids off into a trap that you made.

I am from Germany an grew up with all these Grimm storys, told and read to me by my grandmother from an old book with really scary pictures. From what i can remember, Hänsel and Gretel dont use pebbles but little pieces of bread. When they want to follow the track, the bread is eaten by animals so they cant find the way back. Adding even more meaning to the symbolic food theme.

I think it's also interesting to mention that, at least from my experience, it's most often the mother who suggests throwing the kids out, and that the father is reluctant, and as you said too, remorseful afterwards. That's a bit of a trend in fairy tales I think: The good father and the (somewhat?) evil mother, even if not stepmother which takes that idea to an entire new level.

A key thing to remember about average life expectancy is that it doesn't mean that everyone was dying at age 30 because it's just an average. So people if they made it out of childhood probably lived regular lives but seeing as how people were committing infanticide (aside from the usual high child and infant mortality rates associated with that time) that would drive the life expectancy down pretty low.
