As a student optician, I found neutralization and ordering of a pair of glasses for someone who needs them ASAP but has an expired script to be debated. What is your opinion on creating eyewear for someone that either has an expired script, but current glasses work fine? what about someone who has glasses that broke from years ago and hasn't seen a Dr since, would you make a pair? I guess what I am wondering is when one shouldn't neutralize a pair of eyewear to sell glasses?
I could go on for hours - there is no such thing as an eyeglass prescription. Lenses are two pieces of curved plastic held in front of your eyes with a few pieces of bent wire. Refraction is 100% subjective - YOU choose which is better 1 or 2? The only reason we have prescriptions and "expiration" dates is the $$$$.
@@LaramyKOptical I see, thanks for the insight. I've been in situations where I feel like I should make glasses but the opticians I need the ok from are the "no glasses, no script" kind. I am glad that soon I'll have the ability to make these decisions myself. Just need to take my last exam (NCLE) and wait for the board to accept me!

You will need to check with the ABO. Last time I knew they were using current ANSI. You have to memorize the basic chart and know how to apply them. You can email or call them. You should get a "packet" when you sign up.
Yes. Depending on the amount and the position. You could always pop out the lens and rotate it around to see if you can get things where you like them. If there is a spot that works you know that is probably the problem.

You don't/can't. You can get in the ballpark on a manual lensmeter and from there you have to take it on faith. A high-end auto-lensmeter will get you closer and a dual lens mapper will be spot-on. Some of the new mappers come with a print function so you can send the map as "proof" of powers done to the 1/100th of a D. Are you +/-0.25 around what you were looking for according to the compensated power card? Y - good to go. No - start second guessing things? A -4.00 is not a compensated -2.36589 ;-)
You can't exactly. Frame A + DBL equals frame overall size. A big guy would be looking for something like a 60-20. That would give you a frame of about 140mm across. I'd look for an online place that offers virtual try on program. And - I really don't care where you get your glasses - so I'm not trying to make it sound complicated. Glasses are like shoes and clothes, sizes vary and a few mm one way or the other can be the difference between comfortable and uncomfortable. John
