The eighth video in the series exploring the gorgeous Vermona DRM-1 Mk.iii drum synthesiser. In Part 4 of the series I asserted that you could "probably make a techno track using just the DRM1". Well, money where my mouth is time! All sounds from the DRM1, no overdubs, let's see what we can do!

Owned this machine for years, never get tired of playing with it - always exciting and inspirational. These excellent videos are super exciting, informative and useful - especially the hats video - I struggle to find the sweet spot sometimes on these channels as they are so versatile. My only comment would be: buy the version with the deluxe metal knobs - it looks so chic and is so tactile.

Agree, deluxe is pimped. Also only accepts midi + gate. If your system outputs CV, you'll get missed steps. I returned mine, but if they come up with a version with a more robust midi cc implementation, I'll be first in line. [Not really a Vermona thing to do midi CC, tho]

OK, I think I will need to get one of these, in addition to a Pulsar 23 and a Drumbrute Impact. Just today I ordered a DFAM from Sweetwater. With these machines, plus a wall of Eurorack and a few analog synths my life will be complete.

If it helps tide you over, a few weeks ago I released a big, free sample pack of just this drum synth: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hHtUD4YzXYk.html

Nice jam, I like the drive and it shows what the DRM is capable of! I was kinda sure about getting a Drumbrute, but now I'm starting to doubt my decision again after this video.... RM is more expensive (100 euro), but sounds better, allows more tweaking and you can add FX per channel and reroute the channel output back to the mix (which is great imo), Drumbrute has more parts though so more variation is possible and the sequencer is a big plus, even when planning to mostly use external sequencing. Probably should get both, but that's against my principal rule: no new gear till I'm confident with the gear I already have. Decisions.... Probably should just stick to my first idea but then again, I fear regretting my decision afterwards... Any advice/opinions are welcome!

+Point 45 I honestly don't think you'd be disappointed with either. I agree, the DRM1 sounds great, and at its best I'd also say it sounds "better" to my ears (not a slight on the Drum Brute, it sounds really great as well - insane what Arturia achieved at that price point). Don't underestimate the additional performance aspects the Drum Brute brings - I know you're saying you'd sequence externally, but the sequencer and other performance controls on the Brute are super integrated and fun and creative and it leads to parts that you wouldn't discover if you were working externally. I think a lot of it will come down to what you think is more important to you in the short term. That extra sonic 'oomph' or the exploration of those performance aspects. Hope that helps (although I worry I've probably just made things worse!).

Well, I literally asked for opinions, so I'm glad you gave yours. I agree that the controls on the Brute are amazing and the lack of oomph can be compensated later on (for instance Kick Lancet, Mbase, ... or -why not- the Drm1) if really needed, I guess. That being said, I think the most rational decision is clear but since when am I supposed to be rational when it comes to gear? Thanks for the feedback, it doesn't make it easier but you are right, neither will be disappointing but the Brute's controls might add more creativity and that's probably the best path for me to follow.

how do you like the drumbrute? I'm deciding between a tanzbär, the vermona and the drumbrute.

To me the Drum Brute does not sound good. I think it's quite evident that it needs to rely on a lot of external processing to sound good. The sequencer is the best thing about it. As for the Tanzbar, well I just sold mine and got a DRM-1, and I already had a Beatstep Pro so I'm covered on the sequencer end of things. To me the Vermona just sounds the best of all 3. Tanzbar can be nice but also has to rely a lot on external processing. I would usually need to compress the kick twice for it to sound really good, and many of the other sounds I find too "sharp". I also don't think the sequencer of the Tanzbar has the nicest groove, even with swing. The hi-hats for example, always sounded very "square" and it is hard to get them to sound very groovy, in my opinion.

Nothing but Vermona - if recall correctly the two bass notes are the Tom channels.

Awesome demo of the Veromna Drum! I like the vintage style sounds it has a lot :) Im thinking about buying it with trigger inputs so that it can speak with my modular setup. Could be amazing...
@OscillatorSink

+Mads Vadsholt it's superb, I'd highly recommend it - bear in mind that using the trigger inputs mean sacrificing velocity which is a big source of expression on this unit. But you can't argue with the sound! Thanks for checking out the video!

How can you do a chords with the multi ?
@OscillatorSink
@OscillatorSink 6 лет назад
The multi is basically 3 oscillators that you can detune away from each other over a wide range. I explain and demonstrate it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zq0-L6tsf8A.html
