Vernal pools are just one of the important habitats that are being protected, restored, or maintained by DCR's Division of Water Supply Protection.
By protecting biodiversity on watershed lands, DWSP fulfills the mission to protect, promote and enhance our common wealth of resources and to assure the availability of pure water for future generations.

Terrific Video!!! Amphibian Activist here. I have a (self built) nature preserve with a goldfish pond and also, a "frog pond" that is in shallow woods on the property. Both water features attract a wealth of activity during the season, but the frog pond is an annual haven for rearing both the Wood Frog & Spotted Salamander! So good to see your closing captions about development being a threat to the well being of these magnificent "stars of nature"!!!! I feel it's so important to give them all a helping hand in maintaining their well being. Caddis Flies, Fairy Shrimp, Fingernail Clams, Spring Peepers, Marble Salamanders - good grief the list goes on and on concerning the important role that these magical water bodies serve! Thanks again for a great presentation!!

How do you actually "protect" them? Data gathering is NOT protection. The protection has to comprise proactive action. . Is there restricted access to the area? Are nearby factories etc checked that there is no chemical runoff into the forest?

Data gathering is crucial to the progression towards proactive action to protect them. No legislation or labels can be applied to such areas without study done on them. It’s all part of the process.

There are odd crayfish in the middle of the woods in Michigan that only have water in the spring. I wonder how long they've been isolated there and if they are genetically distinct.

I was attacked by a 12 foot Great White in a vernal pool near my house one time.
