This video shows the variations of water infiltration to the root zone using a comparison between a Verticutted plug, and a non Verticutted plug. Verticutting, or vertical mowing slices the green vertically removing thatch from the golf green. Thatch is dead organic matter that can influence disease pressures, retain unwanted moisture, and can create soft spongy conditions for golfers. Verticutted putting surfaces, when combined with topdressing result in a smoother playing surface for the golfer, resulting in "true" putts. When looking at the importance of water infiltration, this video is simply to prove the increase in the amount of water reaching the root zone, allowing for the irrigation to be run for a shorter duration of time across the scarred surface. Verticutting is key for both the maintenance side and playability sides of the golf course industry.
