Matt from Reloop takes us through how to balance the tonearm on your turntable - in this video concentrating on your vertical tracking angle, or VTA. You may need to set your VTA to a different setting according to the thickness of your slipmat, or other variable features on your turntable.

To the point! Some videos take 30m to explain what you just did in 65 seconds.

Thanks for this. So, what about the angle of the needle to the record? Are we shooting for 90 degrees? Or is the needle appropriate at any angle, as long as the tone arm is parallel to the record? Thanks

Not all TT's have this VTA adjustment. Particularly mid-price range belt drive turntables like Denon dp-400f for one. It's a nice TT and I'm happy with it but I don't see anywhere to adjust the vta.

This is true - we hope this did help though if you plan to upgrade your turntable at any point

Hi I've got a kam ddx750 and there's no dial on mine and no counterweight numbers on the weight so how do I adjust the tone arm as my 45s sound awful and I've just bought a new needle

I may be completely misguided, but can the explanation for the stylus tending to skip inwards really be centrifugal force if the stylus itself is not revolving and therefore not affected by any centrifugal force? When the arm tracks across the record it swings from a starting position where it is at right angles to the motion of the groove. Eventually, at the end of the groove the stylus has swung around so that it is, say, at 80 deg to the groove so that the inner face of the moving groove is pressing more than the outer. This being a sloping face, is not the tendency of the arm's swinging inertia to resist being pushed back outwards, and thus the tendency is to ride up and over the inner face. Can this be in part the explanation for the stylus tending to slip up (and sometimes over) the inner face ? Just asking

Once the record is spinning centrifugal force is occurring. If you place a light object on the record you will witness this. As the needle & tone arm are outside of this and are subject to Coriolis force. So it cancels the centrifugal force and supplies just enough extra centripetal force to allow the tonearm that pushes the tone arm towards the centre of the record. In regards to the stylus slipping up this could be due to the weight not being enough to stay tracked in the groove so the force pulling it towards the centre then causes it to jump and skip.
