Thanks for the help last night. Awesome live session. Can you include ‘how’ to obtain specific equipment for a starter? Do you rent, buy, buy old/repair? It would be cool to hear how to get quality equipment not at full cost in this economy. You the man!
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 2 года назад
Mower i would buy. Seldom used equipment like verticutter, aerator, and top dressing equipment is better to rent for most people. I would spend a bit more on a quality mower since it’s the piece of equipment you’ll be using more than any other. Just build out your kit over time based on budget. Mower is definitely first though.

Ron, love your videos. I have a question about verticutting. We're in Alabama and have been in our house 3 years now. The yard has Palisades Zoysia and looks great after a lot of work the past 3 years. I've core aerated twice a year the past 3 years and cut the grass about every 4-5 days in the growing season. I usually alternate bagging and mulching. Question is, is it too late in the season to do a verticut or should I wait until Spring? I also plan to aerate again in a couple of weeks. Thank you!

is dethatching the same or is verticutting dethatching-the-next-level?
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 2 года назад
Dethatching is more aggressive than verticutting Gregory. Most lawns don't require regular dethatching. Turf raking and verticutting is enough. Bermuda typically benefits more from verticutting vs. dethatching.
@thimitri1

Hi Heather. I’d start buy taking care of weeds and then getting a soil test. Fertilize based on the soil test results. While doing all this, increase your mowing frequency. What is the difference between a verticutter and a dethatcher? They do the same thing but I know the blades are different but why is dethatching discouraged for warm season lawns and verticutting recommended?
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 2 года назад
Hi Michael. Dethatching is more appropriate for longer cool season grass like fescue since it tends to tear at the grass. It's akin to aggressively raking the grass with a rake. Verticutting is literally cutting slits into the lawn. It does less damage to creeping grass like Bermuda and KBG.
@michaelhamer1029
@michaelhamer1029 2 года назад
@@RonHenry I see. Have you seen LCNs video about ryobis new dethatcher/aerator? It’s not much of an aerator at all but one of the blade attachments for it looked like a verticutting blade.
@jimccc9467
@jimccc9467 Год назад
So I’m realizing that thatch is an issue for me, my grass is suddenly this year not tight and dense as it has been the past couple years and it’s really disappointing. I can’t seem to find any place the rents verticutters around me. I have a small electric dethacher but I’m concerned it will damage my Bermuda. I see some electric dethatcher/scarafiers that essentially have to different blades dealios. Any thoughts? I’ve been maintaining HOC of .5-.75 but it’s not looking good.
@RonHenry
@RonHenry Год назад
You could alternatively do a HOC reset (light scalp) this time of year. If you're not using growth regulator and mowing frequently (every other day), you'll have a difficult time keeping your lawn looking good this time of year at .5". I would bump it up to .75" after your reset and see if the color is better there.
