Very cheap Zello crosslink to PMR446 radio

Just a quick video showing how I have set up a link to allow talking between a PMR446 walkie talkie and Zello over the mobile phone network. Could be used as a cheap way of making your own BriLINC type of system without paying them a contract to do it.
I also made a similar system with a crosslink to DMR. Watch the video here:
• Zello to digital walki...
It gives much nicer audio quality than analog.

I just tried this with a Baofeng radio and a scanner and within 5 minutes everything worked! Thank you!

Honestly you don't know how happy it makes me to see someone who's actually clever enough to make this from watching the video. There have been countless people commenting who had no clue on how to set this up and wanted detailed step by step instructions even though I roughly showed how it works in the video. So thank YOU for being one of the few people who use their brain.

Please please please help us. we are an Youth Cadet Program in South Africa. We have a community policing project that we busy setting up for youth from various areas. We have baofeng radios for the boys on the ground, but to link back to our HQ and between the various units I was thinking of using zello interfaced to the 2 way radios. Can you please help me with this. Ive got no clue how to start even. can you get me on facebook or via our websit www.shr.org.za my facebook facebook.com/wdcs67 then we can exchange numbers and email. will be much appreciated

Thanks a lot for your videos! especially on the md-380, they've helped me a lot! I'm going to use this as I work in the arctic where there's no cell service but I have internet at the hotels. The towns are so small range isn't a problem. Zello uses almost no data so its perfect. To anyone who think this is pointless your missing the point entirely.

Thanks so much for this! I appreciate your insight and creative problem solving! Forgive me if I missed this in the video, but why is it necessary to use a scanner AND the handheld radio? Why can you not just use the receive "headphone" jack on the radio as the input for the computer in conjunction with the mic jack (from computer output) used for transmit?
@MBJanus

I got a lot of questions : - what is the "converter" ? - does the computer run some program specially made for this application ? - could this be used at a long range (the cellphone calling from let say 30 miles, and the talky-walky near the computer at the other end ?) - what is the scanner for ? I got several Yaesu VX7 and VX8 but the scan avoids the frequencies of cellphones - a flow chart could be useful to understand how the whole works

1st - check VOX setup. 2nd - check wiring diagram on miklor site (I still do not know, how some radios can work with standard jack to jack cable - pinout of notebook do not fit with pinout of radio - V+ and MIC. Still, some radios works well).

This is cool Ben, have you seen those PTT mics for using with zello on a smart phone? They're bluetooth connected. They're over 50 dollars though which is way too steep. For less than 20 I'd give it a go.

Yeah they're not as simple as normal speaker mics though, because they have to have all the bluetooth circuitry, so I'd say a cost of $50 is not that excessive.

By now, you would have adjusted the audio level being sent to Zello, etc. to reduce distortion. A level limiter would make more sense in a product ver of this solution.

Im about to setup a listen only channel, sort of like a scanner feed and before i set up everything would i only need the speaker plugged into my Pc or would I still need complete setup like this
@stevekiel82
@stevekiel82 4 года назад
You would need the audio side of the radio into the microphone side of the PC to do a listen only feed which you could then listen to via your smartphone on Zello
@radiosification
@radiosification 10 лет назад
you could do that if you had a cable that split it so you could plug one cable into the radio and it splits to mic and speaker, but I don't have a cable like that so have to do it this way.

Crowd sourcing question: If I am in the middle of a dessert with no cellular or wifi coverage, can I send a message by piggy backing a nearby user who has cellular or WiFi ?.. This a technique used by marine VFF distress call - daisy chain. Same is also used by TILE bluetooth key finder. I can locate my lost key in New York even though I m in LA. In other word: does Zello apps enable a cell phone to listen to other phone 4G or 3G protocol without a cell tower ?
@radiosification
@radiosification 5 лет назад
The Zello app does not allow that, no. However you can create a wifi hotspot on most phones which lets another device use the cellular internet connection via that phone. Zello would work fine over that.
@kgsz
@kgsz 5 лет назад
no, the phone itself will not talk to the other phone over 3G/4G - the protocol doesn't allow it. You could - at least in theory - use one of these MESH network devices or apps, jumpiung on/over all phones in range, so they will let you route your HT -> zello call to the internet and then further to the zello in the other phone. (one of these interesting projects is The Serval Mesh, but sadly this is very underdeveloped area - there is no incentive where is know-how)

Sorry I don't mean to be rude but I don't think there is any polite way to say this. Has a two way radio like this EVER needed the internet to work? Did you try using your brain before asking a question? Will what you connect another radio to affect in any way whether the radio on the other end needs the internet? Obviously, if the radio never even had the ability to connect to the internet then how would it not being in range of internet make ant difference at all? As long as both the laptop and the phone have internet it will obviously work if the radio is in range

It sounds like I could walk my dog locally with my uv5r and communicate to my pmr antenna, put it down the internet and speak on Zello? the whole point of a damn walkie talkie is to commmunicate with others in a remote area on the go. No internet, no laptop!
@radiosification
@radiosification 7 лет назад
No it isn't. Maybe that's what you use it for but that's not the whole point of it. There are many different uses. The range of one walkie talkie could extend out of the area of internet coverage anyway. If you only have internet at home for example and live in the countryside and there is no mobile phone signal. Only one walkie talkie has to be connected to the computer. The other can be used anywhere else within range.

nazir niyo Truth but even though Zello has to have the internet to function but it still has a great advantage over the regular walkie talkies because it records important conversations and you can communicate with anyone almost around the world if you has internet or Wi-Fi and you can create your own radio channel with in your group of people like as your coworkers, family, or friends, or even strangers like in hurricane disasters events the point that I'm trying to make is Zello is a great way and idea of communication.

No, you are missing the point completely. This is a gateway to the internet. You set up the laptop with one walkie talkie. Then you can talk to anyone on zello through another walkie talkie. Let's say you have a large property and no mobile internet or wifi. Only internet at your computer. Then you can connect this and use it to talk on a walkie talkie to people online, and you can use it over the whole range of your walkie talkies which would be much greater than the range of wifi.
