Today Luke is discussing a very interesting Tarp that initially was a military product that has since been altered to become a civilian overlanding tarp!
This is the Force Protector Gear Military Field Blanket and Tarp System....
It's very interesting and also, VERY expensive for what it is.

Force Protector Gear - Military Field Blanket and Tarp System - FOR97
What it is : two-layer ThermaShield Field Blankets. Due to its light weight, symmetrical shape, and sheer performance, the FOR97 is the go-to if camouflage is not needed. With thousands in service this Field Blanket has protected soldiers and saved lives on the battlefields and made camping and adventures here at home a cozy endeavor. Attach it to your vehicle, make a hide, or keep warm by the fire making S'mores. The choice is yours.
The US Military describes this as follows : An item used to pack the camouflage screen system or camouflage support system for movement and storage
Agenda Free Link : www.forceprote...
Field Blanket Stats :
Price : Retail $400 - $394 to be exact.
With this being a military product, you can find it for a lot less as surplus. I paid $80 for mine.
NSN : 1080-01-644-8198
Field Blanket Dimensions: 112” L x 72” W
Total Weight: 3lbs 10oz
Pouch Dimensions: 10.5” L x 7” W x 2.5” D
Pouch Capacity: 184 cubic inches (3 liters)
1000D Cordura
FPG DesertCloth
FPG Reflectec
FPG SmartClips
Water resistant YKK Zipper
Military Grade Snaps, Hook and Loop, and Thread
Versions :
There is a Multicam version of this product, it is the FOR112.
There are other versions of this blanket including a 3 layer version and a X-Lite version.
There are also civilian versions of this product that are called shade panels - I will be honest, the FPG site is a mess, it is confusing and the company needs to do a better job of explaining what these products are and how they are different. I’ve noticed that for shade panels, they are often called field blankets and there are other issues which make trying to figure out what you are looking at confusing.
Features :
Finding clear information about what Thermashield does isn’t as straight forward as it should be; the links on the FPG don’t work and they don’t actually come out and say what it does which I find to be weird.
Thermashield according to the claims that I have seen elsewhere online state this;
heat reflecting capability makes chilly sporting events nice and cozy in the stands.
Make a shelter at the beach or protect your family in emergencies, both winter and summer.
Makes great stand-alone shelter when camping or to reduce the temperature in your tent.
Coyote DesertCloth® on one side, Reflectec® (silver) on the other.
Lives by the ThermaShield family tenants which are: Keep you warm when it’s cold. Cool when it’s hot. Dry when it’s wet.
The most impressive aspect to this material that isn’t made obvious is that it prevents radiant heat from coming through the material so if you set this up as a sun shade, the Thermashield reflects the heat of the sun instead of allowing radiant heat to come through the material like a normal tarp or sun shade.
12x Gromolon anchoring and pole attachment points
4xSmartClips with "Quiet Housings" for no-knot fixing to objects or vehicles
12x double sided MILSPEC snaps for attachment to multiple blankets
Fire resistant to CPAI-84
100% UV blocking
Wind proof
Highly water resistant
Hook and Loop I.D. placements
Effective treatment for shock during the Golden Hour of transport
Reduces cold injuries
Reduces heat injuries
Stand-alone shelter/shade
Vehicle based shelter/shade
Expedient litter
Thermal signature mitigation
Modular : Blankets can be snapped together making shelter size as needed.
Berry Amendment Compliant
Lifetime Manufacturer's Warranty
Made in the USA
Pouch:
Pouch is the FOR88.
Compatible with MOLLE or PALS attachment systems
Simple divider can separate contents
Drain hole in the bottom for maritime use
Sturdy water resistant YKK Zipper with 550 Para Cord pull.

I have a few of these that were issued to me 12 years ago in Afghanistan. I absolutely love them. I have used them as awnings, shelters, and blankets to stay warm.

I think I'll stay with my 15'x15' Aqua Defender. I make a similar set up, but put the suction cups on the passenger side, loop the guide lines thru my roof rack, then set up the tarp covering the drivers side and doors, so if it rains, the water doesn't drip down the doors, so I can open them without getting water inside my SUV. Yes, it doesn't block the UV as much, but I use layers, my tent and such.

I use an Arcturus tarp ... 8.5 x 12 feet. Heavy duty and aluminized Mylar on one side. I has lasted for a couple years of frequent use and for $45 is outstanding. I use it with suction cups as well.

Luke here is a thought/challenge for you. Use a mylar emergency/space blanket under your current tarp and it does the same thing. I have done this and it is much cheaper a d lighter. More bang for you your dollar. Give it a try and let me know what you think.

Good to have this kind of tarp, in the truck. The suction cups are a great idea too. All tarps will degrade when exposed to UV, wind and weather. We all know that. The thick cotton canvas, layered with the insulation, may last a bit longer. You’re right about the price. Thanks for sharing. Kentucky

I Save $200 ( or more) and use thermal blanket without the useless “canvas”‘layers. Works well for sun and rain. May be weaker in strong winds, but haven’t had a problem yet. I bungee to roof rack. I’m cheap

Hi Luke, those suction cup Holder Oners seem a pretty good invention. By the way that tarp can withstand a direct hit of up to a 20-megaton nuclear explosion. The military use tough materials that is GI Proof. Sounds like it needs spray-on waterproofing and UV protection sprayed on from time to time. Plus, I'd prefer a 12 X 12-footer. I'd pay maybe up to $100 clams for a 12 X 12 with the suction cups, but then I am the type that will pick up a penny if I find one on the ground.

Luke great review. I have a large one and a small one as well love them. Also have three poles for the mandatory the guy lines and stakes all this came with the one I have. Love using them as a over cover over the tent makes the tent much cooler on summer time trips. However as you stated they are heavy and there reserve them to car camping trips only

On my (faux) Prinsu rack I mounted 2 of the quick release shovel and axe holders, the ones the forest service uses. I have 2 PVC pipes that telescope into each other. I bought a10X10 heavy denier tarp, set of tent poles and locking pins from Amazon. I had the awning deployed in 15 to 20 mph winds at land between the lakes and it held up amazingly. Very nice place to be in the blazing sun. I think I spent $80 bucks on the whole set up. That is too small for 2 people and I could have got 3 or 4 under mine. Very cool concept though.
@dasta7658
@dasta7658 2 года назад
You put an interesting take on the meaning of the label. I read that to mean "Hey, don't set this up as a permanent shelter or car shade or it will degrade." That makes perfect sense to me to stop people from abusing their gear then whinging wanting a refund because they have unrealistic expectations.

Just wanted to mention that I did go to the New Zealand based “abcamping”channel that Luke recommended and found it interesting although his vids are very long at 2-3 hrs. Also interesting is the Japan based “Coupy Channel” channel. He camps in a very small camper and his most recent vid is a review of a stealth camper built on a Toyota chassis sold in Japan. You will have to enable English subtitles.

I agree it is expensive for what it is. I am not concerned about the "disclaimer" on the label. True, they can back out of a warranty complaint, but it is equally likely it is that way because someone misused the tarp and then complained. Consider that things like firewood and car tires have finite lifespans, but we don't worry about that.

This seems like a product designed, in part to defeat thermal weapon sights. Hence the cost. A soldier could set up a tent with this pitched directly over and be invisible to enemy drones and such.

i've never had to setup in a war zone for protection from the sun, but in training i have. what we did was have a cheap tarp (< $10) then a "good" tarp directly over that with at least a 6" gap between them. this in my experience provided the best protection from the sun's heat during the day. and it was always setup close to the ground, like 24-30" from the ground. put another way: tarp over tarp, 6" gap between them. and just high enough to get you and your gear under. the gap allows air to pass between the tarps and you never feel the heat from the sun. my personal setup cost less than $100 and that included a ground sheet & piece of camo netting i'd just drape over the top. side note: some of the guys would dig a shallow trench and cover that with their ground sheet to lay in. that way the tarps could be lower to the ground (i didn't think it was necessary).
