World famous scale modeling author Mike Ashey steps you through a detailed review of this brand new 1/350 scale ship kit from Very Fire/Blue Ridge Models. Mike reviews the individual part trees and then he does a tape up review of the hull, main deck and the superstructure assemblies.
This kit of the USS Cleveland, CL-55 is the first injection molded kit of this class of US Navy World War-II Cruisers. The kit is well molded with no flash and the mold seams on parts is minimal. The individual parts fit is excellent and the sub-assembly fit to other sub-assemblies is outstanding throughout the kit. There are no voids between any parts and the seam work between part halves is minimal. The surface detail on the decks and the superstructure sides is outstanding.
Mike provides some recommendations on what kit parts to replace with 3D printed parts and sources for photoetch detail parts. He also provides a recommendation for paint color mixing techniques to achieve navy blue and deck blue colors using Testors enamel paints.

Use the tape up technique on every model you build and be sure to mark the parts as you remove them.

I'm amazed it's taken the industry this long to do a Cleveland (or an Exeter, or a Leander). Still waiting on the latter, but this really is a golden age if you like ships in '350. How do you choose? There's even an Aoba coming out.

Like the way Mike describes fit of parts. You don't get that elsewhere. This is the most significant deficiency of all the other in-box reviews. If the parts don't fit properly, that is a major problem. I had that problem with the Trumpeter Lexington.

Boy the superstructure detailing is absolutely great . Tamiya really needs to rethink their detail. Even the old Life Like models had better detailing than them. I may purchase a cruiser kit next after I finish my sms Koenig kit.

'SM w/ Mike Ashey'.... Thanks for the review!!! I like the CLEVELAND-class CL since I built my CLG-3 USS GALVESTON!! ALTHOUGH..... building this kit to a CLG Would be MUCH Work, it kinda entices me to build it............. but I have Quite a few models to get thru!!!! Do You show your models W.I.P. videos?? Again, nice narration, Great review.... and 'Very Fine' looks ....."Very Fine"!!!

It’s a nice kit, but you have to take your time I recommend Blackcat models 3D printed items for the radars and small caliber guns

@@scalemodeling Curious 'Mike' ... on the recom on 3D printed items ... if you had a choice of PE or 3D, which would you choose and why? I am still, fairly young, (50+) and still deal with PE, but you are now the second person saying to go with 3D, they Really that good??? Thanks for your time. M

I used Blackcat 3D printed products for my Missouri build Use the PE for railings and hatches Use 3D stuff for radars, 5”/38 twin turrets, 40and 20mm guns Black cat also has nice deck fittings like rope reels and small boats If you use PE for say the 20mm’s you will be dealing with very tiny parts on each gun And getting them all to look the same is very difficult The 3D printed 20mm have everything attached. All you have to do is snip them off the runners

@@scalemodeling Thanks, 'Mike' .... I was talking w/ Ray Bean, and he says the same thinig..... 3D is WAY easier for those small, intricate, multi-piece details. No fuss/muss!! I must admit that the detail of 3D stuff is great, especially when I was dealing with GALVESTON build ( on my channel ) and her Talos launcher, I tried to build up the 'shoulders' where the missile arms attach but was getting too messy.......what a life-saver that was in finding those launchers.... just a little clean-up and prep and paint = done!! MayBe as I get older, I might switch to 3D and as long as I have my Patience I'll stick to PE ...... or PE will stick to me... ( I Hate that part ) ;)

Mike. My dad served aboard a Cleveland Class cruiser, USS Birmingham CL-62. Do Decals come with this model? Or can you purchase them separately? Thanks.
@scalemodeling
@scalemodeling 3 года назад
Ship decals are hard to come by these days EBay is a good place to check You can also print your own decals with an ink jet or laser printer

How are Blue Ridge and Very Fire related? Is one a distributor for the other? Do they both use the same manufacturer?

@@FALLau1 I would build some older Revell ship kits first. They are inexpensive and easy to build.
