Tommy takes a look back at the first recording of the popular Reviews on the Run segment from Electric Playground. Nice to see the show has evolved significantly since then, and Victor used to give out 10s back then too.
LMAO, tommy & victor were a year older than my age now, way back in 97 or so. I used to watch ROTR 7-8 years ago during the latter part of the 6th gen and early 7th gen.
Time needs to stop T_T I can't handle it man. I was just a kid in this video, they say they're only 28 which puts this video at 1996 which means I was only 9 years old. Freaking kills me reminiscing and seeing the younger years of not just myself, but the world and all these other people in it. The innocence, the honesty, I miss it so much.
I love how they review them so quickly. Just bam bam bam and they reviewd 10 games. I also love how Tommy always gives random decimal numbers, like 9.6, what the hell is that?
It's incredible that Vic is still going strong in 2023 at 55 years old. He's still running his Electric Playground Network channel and streams games regularly on Twitch. The man is an inspiration to me and I hope I can do some stuff as fun and worthwhile as he has. I'm only 35 (36 in August 2023, 2 months away) so maybe I still have time to pickup a hobby like this and start making content. Only way to lose is by doing nothing. Hopefully future me isn't disappointed in the decisions I make in the here and now.
This first episode is so special to me. Man they were 28 years old here and had that youthful passion for gaming, it's so wonderful to see. I wish I did fun stuff like this in my 20s and early 30s. Gonna be 36 in August (2 months) and feel like the opportunities for this kind of stuff is over. Missed my chance.
Tommy didn't call Mario a "satisfactory game" he just said it wasn't up to par with the "greatest games ever" in his mind. He still had fun playing the game.
@@regularslick6038 bit late, but 100% likely that this was filmed in 96. EP itself aired the following year in 97 so this is basically pilot footage of what would become their reviewing format.
@jamgrieve no thats what made the show great was that vic was more of the pro and tommy was the comedian it was a perfect match, and the fact that they did 1 show a week was great nowadays 5 shows a week is way too much
They have guest reviewers when Tommy is on the road with Video Games Live. Remember that Tommy is a musician first, gamer second. The show isn't the same without the presence of the Tommy & Vic combo, but he has other obligations.
These guys are great as game reviewers, but Vic is just so free with his scores of giving 10 out 10's to so many games. 10 out 10 to me implies that the game is perfect which no game can really be. I just like how Tommy is more realistic with his scores whether I agree with him or not.
I think it's silly to see a 10/10 as some perfect, unattainable score. Most critics/review sites see a 10/10 as an amazing, ground breaking game (Mario 64, MGS, Half-life, Zelda OoT, etc.), not necessarily "perfect".
I miss tommy why is he never on anymore? its usually Scott, marc, or Jose. They all rock (especially jose you rock man!) but I still miss tommy wish they would put him back on more.
@tweaker61 The reason they mostly do iphone/ipad app reviews is because they're sponsored by Rogers now (they'll mention it at least twice in every episode). Rogers is essentially the only company that sells iPhones and iPads with 3G, so obviously they would try to make Reviews on the Run promote it as heavily as possible.
man i love this show, awsme series as well as EP. i miss Tommy, and im sure Vic felt the same. only complaint is that sometimes both Vic and Tommy were inconsistant with there reviews.
Its funny hearing them talk about how great tomb raider looks, i bet if i had a time machine and showed them metal gear solid 4, or even gta vice city their heads would explode from pure shock!! lol
Wow, it kind of seems like they took no notes Lol. I enjoy it more now that they give more time and more in depth reviews, but this was cool. No clue how Tommy thinks Tomb Raider looks better than Mario tbh. Just compare the water alone in both games!

Although I enjoyed the old "Tommy/Vic" setup, it wasn't the most professional of reviews. I can't imagine Tommy on the show these days. He'd probably get booted off faster than anything.

The graphics WERE amazing for 1996. I was a 9 year old then and coming from 2D games like on the NES, SNES and Genesis to N64 and PlayStation it was nuts. You can't understand if you weren't there.
X-Play is a joke compared to RotR. Victor Lucas is the perfect example of a perfect video game journalist. Very professional and knowledgeable. Tommy Tallarico compliments Lucas' style perfectly with his wacky humour that keeps the viewers entertained. Morgan Webb and Adam Sessler know nothing and aren't even funny when they try to be.

He was 100% right all those 16 years ago. Victor is a genuine gamer at heart and really puts in a ton of care into everything he does involving gaming. He's even still doing reviews and live streams today on Twitch at 55 years old. Tommy is also a true gamer and gave his genuine opinions on games. X-Play on the other hand was a couple actors who barely even cared about gaming (read up on that ass Adam Sesler, he hated gaming and had other people write his scripts.) Reviews On The Run, Electric Playground, Judgement Day all these shows Victor worked on (especially with Tommy) were all some of the best pieces of gaming content in history and I'm so grateful for their works and that I was alive at the right time to witness them.
Lol I remember my friends and I would say `these graphics are amazing` for game like mario64 but now the games make them look mediocre but don't get me wrong those graphic were amazing for that time.
anyone know when they show new episodes? everytime I tune in its a rerun of 2007 or 2008, its pretty annoying, also even though victor was younger then, he looks younger now.
Am I the only one who thinks Tallarico bashes Nintendo WAY too much? It really pissed me off when I heard he called Super Smash Bros. Melee "kiddy" and he also bashed one of the Zelda games for its music. And then he gave the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory game a 9. WHAT THE FUCK, TOMMY.
wow they were such douches but i love this show and i miss tommy and his honest reviews hope these to achive there dreams they are great people. watch this show on g4techtv or city tv its great
mehhh i think it was less about how good the game was and more about how much better it was at being a 3d game than everything else at the time. I actually never beat SM64 :(
Mario 64 is a masterpiece to this day, notwithstanding some mild camera issues. Mario controls like a dream with incredible fluidity. Travelling from point-A to point-B can be done in a countless number of ways and the players felt perfectly 1:1 in sync with Mario after a little practice. Tomb Raider was a clunky disjointed mess on release and became completely antiquated when Mario 64 came out.
I can understand why they the thought Tomb Raider and Mario 664 etc etc had great graphics but that soccer game?? I mean.... Ugh, I think that my eyes are bleeding.
Eh no. Super Mario 64 deserves it, so does Crash Bandicoot and Tomb Raider. These games were legendary in their own time. They basically created their respective genres as nothing was like that at the time, and they came out and did a really good job with it. It was the wild west at the time and these dudes were way ahead of the rest of the pack with these titles. I think Victor and Tommy were totally fair with their scores.
Victor isn't boring he just excelled when he had Tommy bouncing off him as the comic relief while Victor was the serious good reviewer playing it straight.
