Yep, exactly. Late war guns can be very interesting and very informative.

I just picked up a rope hole 27th series at a show in NY for $275. Mismatched bolt and the stock has been lightly refinished, but with a rifle that hard to find and that cheap I couldn't pass it for the Arisaka collection. Love the videos!

I'd say you did well....in fact, i sold a rifle 5-6 years ago matching that description right down to the lightly sanded stock. Even back then it brought something around $750.

Bit of an update, I had another rope hole Arisaka come in today. This one is a TJK and is the final version made at the factory. It lacks both the dustcover grooves as well as the front sling swivel and even a serial number. It does have the Mum and factory mark, but has no series symbol.

I need to do some research on a type 99 that was passed down to me. Its a late war with the chrysanthemum ground off.

I'm currently looking at buying a type 99. It's to be a mishmash or parts, no finger groove in the wood, it has that split washer looking scrw behind the hand guard, but it has a hooded frontsight and adjustable rear, it has the 2 screw sling swivels and the metal butt plate, checkered safety cap and dust cover. But it looks like it never had the type 99 marked on the receiver. I'm a little concerned it might be a late war "last ditch" that has had the cosmetics of an transitional rifle applied. I'm not concerned with that, what I'd like to know is if the barrels are still able to be swapped out, because this one is pretty worn and I can get a replacement that in good shape

for anyone interested i ended up finding a MUCH better condition type 99. intact mum and AA sights and all, cost me 1500 AUD, the other bad condition one was 1000 so not bad i guess considering they arent super common in australia

Hey so I bought a type 99 at a antique military show a couple of weeks ago. Well I was under the impression that mine was a early 99. However it doesn't have a protected front sight but does have ram rod slot. Anyways I was wondering what markings I look for to see what factory mine came from, as well as your estimation of when it was made.

Misha - Can you please comment on the value of those rifles?

Honestly, its rather subjective. To someone wanting a late war gun, quite a bit. I've seen ropeholes go anywhere from $900 up past $1,800.

That is less than I expected - I do not have an Arisaka, but I think this is one I would want for the collection. A rifle with a story...

Well when you consider that a normal Substitute 99 last ditch rifle goes for $300-$400, the ropeholes do bring a premium. It is just that Japanese guns haven't reached Nazi German prices...not yet at least. They are going up though. My very first last ditch (a Kokura Series 25 as it happens) was given to me by a pawnshop after I bought a Type 30 from them for $150. My first early Type 99 was $200 at a gunshow, and now those are going for well over $1k on Gunbroker. So interest and thus prices are rising with regards to Japanese Arisakas. Personally, I find them very interesting and have been collecting them for nearly 20 years. We'll be doing more short videos like this one looking at specific variants, and also we have a 3 part series looking at them as a general introduction and overview, cheers.

Wow that is a last ditch and I have never seen the rope hole model The ones I have are 1939 and 1940 models so in better shape but I did get a last ditch 1945 action and barrel I put to use for a few rounds one time before I found the chamber was cutting cases with what looked like heavy lathe marks in the chamber so I dismantled that rifle
