Then the plane would hit the banner, send you flying off at 230 Km/h and the banner would go into the engines, stop them from working and the 747 would crash into a block of flats, killing at least 600 people and making it the deadliest air disaster in history.

At the northern end of the runway, buildings rose up to six stories just across the road. The other three sides of the runway were surrounded by Victoria Harbour. The low altitude manoeuvre required to line up with the runway was so spectacular that some passengers claimed to have glimpsed the flickering of televisions through apartment windows along the final approach.

And since i was booked at the Metropole in Kowloon for a week, i got pretty used to it. The view from the plane during the approach was just as amazing, like you were gonna hit the rooftops any moment! I also happened to be there the week Chek Lap Kok Airport opened, and i sure missed the hustle and bustle of good old Kai Tak :(

Early on (late 50's and 60's) I could distinguish the plane, and hence often the airline, from the sound of the engines. Comet 4, VC 10, Boeing 707, Boeing 720, DC-8, Convair 880 and 990, etc. Occasionally they had to take off over the city. THAT was real noise, and quite a treat, especially since firecrackers had been banned after 1967. Kids were easy to impress back them.

This is the old airport, I remember landing here when I visited HK for the first time in '97....its like all the buildings of Kowloon coming straight at you as the plane lands....kinda feels galactic! But, whoah....HongKong's new airport is something else, it is huge and ultra modern....the new one is far from the city.... but there is no stopping HongKong-ers, they are building new buildings near the airport, so in a few years time, it'll be like landing in Kowloon again!

Ik if there’s an engine failure, it’s just certain that it’s going to kill people on the ground in that area because it’s so close to the buildings and they are tall and it’s densely populated plus in Hong the chances were and still are that it’s going to be a big plane because the demand is so high, they even used and still do use 747’s and 777’s on short routes so the casualties if a 747 crashed into the buildings would almost defined be 600+, making it the worst crash in history above the crash of the venture which was two 747’s colliding and only 61 survived but that was the 70’s so the 747’s didn’t have a 600+ capacity

Ya see, privileged people that want air travel but don't want a airport near where they live. I live in East Point GA near Hartsfield/Jackson. The busiest airport in the country. Planes pass over all the time. Up until 10:30-11:00 pm. And start up in the morning at 6-7 am. The planes have those new turbo fan engines are are quieter that any highway traffic. You get use to it. But the privileged elite that drive to the airport will complain about getting robbed leaving their doors unlocked in their neighborhood. For those that look at this and gasp, I say - GET A GRIP!!!!!

@diegoalfa3 this airport doesn't handle traffic anymore. It was replaced by a newer airport on Chek Lap Kok island.

@CannibaLouiST interesting fact was that when check lap kok was built, many residents who lived near kai tak suffered from sleep deprivation because they wernt used to not having roaring engines above. to them, the silence was deafening.

Not to mention the cross winds which forced almost every 747 to have a "crab" landing!!!! But it has been closed for over 12 years - but the legacy continues!!!! THe new Hong Kong airport - is truly wonderful!!!!!!!

In Hong Kong, there is a slang "shoot the airplane", mainly used by the local footballers when, playing near the old airport, "kicking the ball too sky high" (bad player, of course), signifying that the ball was kicked so high that it can almost hit the airplane at that time. But today, mostly, this slang has been referred to something else...

A stark contrast to the silent planes flying at 43,000 ft in my deep odd corner of flyover country

I remember how scary it was to land there, sometimes like flying between two taller buildings.

@airboyd ok i just checked this and it's official title is 'worlds busiest international airport' which i guess is reference to the international passengers part - but regardless that really was not the point i was making lol. The guy said that the planes fly as close to buildings at heathrow airport as they do in this video - and i know that is certainly not true.

I saw this in Black Ops, but thought it was just for show, I didn't know the planes actually get that close to the buildings, haha!
