It was such a nice surprise to get to be able to watch some traditional Serbian Folk music and dance at the 29th Anual Belef Festival. I hope you will also enjoy this. It was a spur of the moment experience, trying to get a ticket to what turned out to be a sold out show. But lucky for me I was gifted a free pass, from a guy whom turned out to be a local celebrity. Was very great - ful to be able to get in and share with you guys. Check it out!

Yes it's protected. The circle dances have very intricate steps and with the music is definitely unique and quaint.

It is the folklore ensemble `Kolo`, a professional ensemble of folk dance and music founded by the Serbian government in 1948. So far, they have held about 6,000 concerts around the world in their mission to preserve and present the folk dances and music of Serbia. Not everyone can pass their audition, among these dancers there are those from the ballet school, so you really watched the best of the best. The Kolo ensemble is under the care of the state of Serbia and has its financial support, so concert tickets are never expensive, which is wonderful! :)

KOLO dances from Serbia. Kolo comes from the Serbian word "Okolo" meaning "around" and wheel and Kruglo meaning circle. In other words, circle dance. Cognate with the English word "wheel" which comes from the Old English word hweol, hweogol, from Proto-Germanic *hwehwlan, *hwegwlan, from Proto-Indo-European *kwekwlo-, an extended form of the root *kwel- "to revolve, move around". Cognates within Indo-European include Icelandic hjól meaning wheel, Greek κύκλος kúklos, and Sanskrit chakra, the latter two both meaning "circle" or "wheel". A car is called kola in Serbian :)

How wonderful to be there. Nice to see traditions from the past. In the long distant past, countries, when invading other countries, would try to wipe out their history... Here in the USA, they are doing that from within. It is so wrong. Take care and keep on enjoying your interesting life. Peace, Love, Harmony, Laughter, and Great Health to you and all around you 👍❤️🙏

Cheers C Greg appreciate that. Agreed with what you wrote, am very glad you also see how our human life story is changing and being whitewashed in the USA. I remember growing up in the USA seeing some traditional folk festival events in the local parks also. It was interesting fascinating and well celebrated. But over time, there were fewer and fewer of these events...they just vanished little by little. I find it incredible after learning about this area fighting over 140 wars, and changing rulers, that the people held their traditions to heart and didn't loose the "soul" of the people. Take care also my friend.

It represents the Sun! Thus 4C on the crest/ coat of arms/ flag etc, meaning never ending sun. Bread is also made in the shape of the circle-kolo- kolač . Calendar comes from the Serbian word Kolodar. Kolo-circle , dar- gift. Srbians have the oldest calendar in the world, and olso the oldest European civilization. We’re celebrating year 7529(2021).
