I'm almost 80 years old and as a result of riding for 55+ years, have accumulated over 500,000 miles on two-wheeled vehicles. Two of them have been Vespas (GT200 and a brand new GTS 300 HPE) I also owned and rode a Kymco 150 Like. All the rest of have been motorcycles, ranging from 90CC to 1600CC. There is a difference between Vespas and other scooters. Some call it heritage, a lifestyle, a culture....and you do pay extra for it. The same holds true for Harley Davidson motorcycles. What I also know is that at 80 years of age, I am no longer strong enough to "horse around" 700 to 900 lb. motorcycles. My GTS 300 at 360 pounds fits my present physical strength just fine, and I still take great joy at leaving most cars "in the dust" when I take off from a stop light. Having said that, I try to always remember that it's not what you ride, but that you're riding. Enjoy your two wheels, and stay safe!

The Kymco Like is a great scooter. Superb look and overbraked for such a light vehicle. Plus, ownership allows you to stick two fingers up to the Chinese Communist Party. What's not to like?

Great video, and you have pointed out the most significant "User requirement advantages" that set VESPA away from the competition. Here's my take on it, If I may....as someone who has run all sorts of motorcycles including VESPA products. Firstly, have to say that I no commercial connection to the VESPA brand, I've 40 plus years of experience of 2 wheeled transport and my experience tells me one over-riding truth. THE difference is simple. You can still buy service parts for the original 1940s Vespa Scooters in Italian dealer shops. The internet is a wonderful thing! I don't think you will be able to say that for KYMCO in 70 years time. Vespa scooters cost way more to make than an alternative brand as they are built to be ABLE to be repaired. Even the very latest ones are built to be able to be repaired and give very long service. Pay Cheap, pay twice as they say.

I've ridden two wheels for 55 years, from BMWs, to Hondas and everything else. I had knee injuries in the Navy, and that stopped me from riding motorcycles because my right knee bending is limited, bend it too much for too long and, oh, the pain. Scooters are like sitting in a chair. I've had a 1987 Honda Elite 150 for 13 years, I added a Honda 250 Reflex, then a Suzuki Burgman 400 and now, what you bought, a 2017 Vespa GTS 300, in Ferrari red, after all, I am Italian and my last name is close enough, Ferraro. It will cruise at 65 to 70 easy. Thanks for the episodes.

My Corgi bought me a 300GTS (red) in 2010 for Father's Day. It has been perfectly reliable, still great fun to ride , gets 65mpg and is way sportier than the uninitiated might imagine. Of the ca. 30 motorcycles I've owned, the Vespa, along with my '73 BMW R5, are my favorites.

If you disassemble the Vespa scooter and the other scooters you will understand for sure that they are poles apart. Only the Indian made Vespas are a disgrace to the Piaggio group("Make in India project"--Govt of India) by my experience within a year they made me a "scooter mechanic" it all started from the cheap quality ignition rotary switch and list simply goes on and on .😍😍😍 Nice work . Yeah the reason people love Vespa so much (apart from its looks of course) is its history. Scooters existed before the Vespa but the Vespa was the ancestor of basically all scooters as we know them today. Sure there are plenty of very good competitors out there (several of which I have owned and loved) but none of them have that history and just pure class. That's what you pay for, if its worth the extra money or not is down to the individual but there's clearly more than enough people willing to pay the extra to keep them in business.

Speaking of Brittish, I purchased a 1972 Norton Comando Combat, it was a 750cc and did a sub 12 second quarter mile, pretty fast in that day in time. One scooter/bike I always wanted but never got was a Mustang Stallion, they were a small motorcycle and ran quite fast for a 12HP motor. Look them up, they have a lot of class!

When I first got the scooter bug I wanted nothing but a Vespa. An ET4 particularly. This was around 2005/06, but when I finally got my license in 2010 and went to look at Vespas again they had priced themselves out of my business. Plus, I had since discovered that they tended to have electrical problems or were difficult to find parts for, or they took a while to order. It’s still a great brand, but not the only amazing fish in the sea.

I owned and tested both the Vespa ET2 and ET4 . Both models were fun , solid and reliable to drive . Vespa has built its reputation through many years of development . They are the premier classic scooter to own if you can afford one .

A few years ago, I bought a used Vespa 300 GTV in CA. It’s a very fun scooter. When I bought a house in TX, I was looking for a Suzuki Burgman 650 Executive. I looked and rode 2 used ones and passed on them. They weren’t as fast out of the hole, weren’t as smooth and the “transmission” feels weird when slowing to a stop. I then found a new one just out of the box at a dealer in Houston (they quit importing them in 2018 for some reason) and I got it for $3K under sticker. It rides the same as the used ones. It’s main advantage is that it is more competent at 65mph+ than the Vespa-plus it has a power windshield and power mirrors.

It would be safer to buy scooter with ABS snd TCS for long commuting. The smaller wheels on scooters might require you to change your riding habits. 150 c.c. might not be powerful to carry both of you for touring. A scooter of long wheel base with top box to lean on for back seat passenger could be more comfortable on long ride. There are plenty of scooters around 300 c.c. could be your choice.

As a owner of a 1970 Vespa GTR in the UK, I can honestly say it was a great review. It's about time a lady in the scooter world did a comparison and a critique. You do pay for the brand, that's just life. But you do buy into the heritage that's lasted the time and has developed scootering for other brands to use.

Besides a 2006 Vespa GT200, I also Have a 1979 Vespa P200E 2 stroke manual shift manual clutch scooter. I will never give that one up. But I have been seriously considering trading my GT200 for a 300GTS. It's the HPE thing that scares me. They cut the major maintenance intervals literally in half. That has to make you wonder. And if you are a high mileage rider like I am (60K+ miles on my GT200) all that maintenance could get VERY expensive. Why is it necessary on the HPE and not on the regular GTS300?

I'm not sure about modern scooters but they have a good reputation here in the UK. Scomadi and Royal alloy are both good also. Are they worth the extra? I don't know. I would imagine they are. In the long run you'll never have a problem with parts and there will always be mechanics that can work on them. I can still buy parts for my lambretta gp despite the fact that lambretta went out of business in 1971. Also if you want to tune your scooter there are a lot of companies catering for vespa.

Was the side stand off? when i sit and the side stand is down my feet dangle like if i were on a horse. Anyone that can help me chose between Vespa Sprint 50 with some mods for a stronger ignition, or a standard Peugeot Django 50 cc with no modifications ? I might add a new cylinder over time if easy to do on these, but some people warn me that new modern-day scooters need computer software to tune them... I am not sure that is true.. ... but how to choose between these models really? quality, functions, strength uphill, comfort etc? what to consider between them?

Excellent information here! I personally think that Vespa motor bikes are very well made. Not to compare motor bikes but the Honda C 90 are something to look into. If you can find a well cared for bike of the past. Just the history of sales is insane and incredible, where multiple countries have had them and still use them and put tons of miles on them them!! They are simple to work on, extremely durable basically a tank!! And most importantly the price is way more affordable. The Honda super Cub 125 they now sell still holds the classic look and built to last as well, getting excellent gas mileage and very comfy to ride, also has wind protection fairings which come in handy when it's colder weather. There is a man (Ed march) I believe, on RU-vid which has gone traveling all over the world 🌎 🌍 with one of those Honda c90's it is mind blowing the abuse and constant use he has the poor bike through... Thx for sharing, yeah Vespas are special for sure. The older models that are rebuild and cared for are stunning to see. Even the new ones seem to hold similar quality everyone is used to seeing. It's just that some pockets can not afford them lol.

When I was 15 I wanted to own a Vespa sooo badly after riding one once. It was stylish, light, and faster & quick compared to USA scooters with the same sized engine They were too expensive for me at around $250 I think. Now at 80 I still would like to have one but it is not practical where I live vs its cost so I'll stick to my BMW motorcycle.

Vespa is just a hype with occasional electric glitches that you cannot find out reason why while the metal body got ugly after just one tip-over. The Vespa is also unique or unusual in that it does not have a front fork. It has a front tire arm that only attaches to the tire on one side. Piaggio is the mother company of Vespa. Piaggio used to make airplanes. That could be where it is similar to an airplane from landing gear. I personally only wanted a Vespa. I did not care about any other scooter. I ride my GTS vespa a lot but also my little honda metropolitan. There are things that I like about both. The plastic body on the honda has held up extremely well. It starts up and runs great. I have had some problems with the Vespa that was covered under a recall. The Honda Metropolitan is so great I can't say enough about it. I do wish that Honda put a bigger engine in the metropolitan but it is what it is. 49cc is a bit underpowered. A 150cc would be perfect. As it is the metropolitan is only good on city streets and never on any road more than 40 mph speed limit. The Vespa I can take anywhere. If the Honda Metropolitan were 150cc, I would probably sell the Vespa.

I''ve had numerous Vespa's in my life. Started with a 125...rode it all around my city for 5 years then came across a Vespa Lx 150 that was wrecked, I bought the wreck and took the 150 and put in the 125 body. I had an 8" front tire and 10" rear tire. Later I purchased a 200 Vespa from a Honda Dealer, apparently someone traded it in on a motorcycle and the dealer just wanted to dump it. I picked it up for a measley $800 bucks. Then I sold it to a student in Austin, Tx for $4500. Later I bought another 150 and a 200...These were all clutch/shift models. Later I bought a Piaggio (Piaggio makes Vespas) X9, it's a 500cc very large scooter, more like a motorcycle with a body...I parked it in a space at Home Depot, and put it in the rear of the space. When I came out of the store the front end was smashed to peices and the Scooter was laying sideways on the ground. As I was surveying the damage a lady came up behind me..."Is that your motorcycle?" I answered "Yes". She said, Sorry, I pulled into what I thought was an empty parking space and before I could stop I hit your scooter. I got her Insurance and filed, they totaled it. I later saw it at the wrecking yard and gave them the master key and explained mods I'd done to the scooter. Well I've always enjoyed my scooters, by the way I was riding my X9 on Hwy 46 on my way to Boerne Texas and came up on a bout 15 Motorcycles in a large group. No one was coming from the other direction so I gassed the X9 passing all of them going about 115 MPH (top was 120). When I got to Boerne I stopped at a Malt/Hamburger shop to get a burger. As I was waiting for my burger the motorcycles pulled up. They all got off their bikes and were looking at my X9. I went out to talk to them. Funny thing, one guy was looking at the speedometer and of course it had KM numbers and he said, Holy Cow, this thing goes up to 200...he didn't realize that's KM's...anyway they were all interested, I guess having never seen one before. In fact in Riding it for 3 years I never once saw another one....

 @Scooter Newbie Look for "Piaggio X9" on search engine. Mine was Metallic Blue and was a 500cc model (460 actual). They also made a 250 cc as well, slightly smaller body but same style. I had a top box on the rear. I modified it so both lights were on at high beam vs. 1. I also put a light below the seat so when I opened the seat with the remote my light showed the place to put in the key. I also modified the drive belt cover so I could get it off without taking the side plastic apart.

I wonder if you looked into longevity as a component of the used market? I see a lot of older Vespas available and fewer "other than Vespas" when I look at what is available pasted a certain number of years old. I think that may be due to a combination of higher initial quality and better availability of parts/service for used Vespas over non-Vespas, and that can also be a very important consideration as well. I chose Vespa because with nearly every other similar style scooter I was worried about the availability of parts and service as the years went by, and even some of the currently available cheaper Asian models are difficult to find parts for and someone to service it - not to mention that off-brands are much more difficult to get warranty claims fulfilled if anything went wrong. Naturally, scooters from the traditional Japanese motorcycle brands (Honda, Suzuki, etc.) don't have those issues but as you mentioned in the video, style was important as well.

I have a vespa 125 primavera 2014 11 inch wheels and no abs. I took the vespa from 8000 miles to 42000 miles. Then I considered buying a new primavera, but at £4600 front abs, 12 inch wheels and rear drum brake. I compared the vespa with several other scooters and really wanted larger wheels if possible. I ended up buying a Honda SH125i. I was using the bike for deliveries and safety was key. 16 inch wheels makes large pot holes small. Front and back disk brakes and abs, also traction control. £3500, I also ordered a screen and what they call knuckle guards. Had the vespa come with the same speck for the £4600 as the Honda, other than the wheels, I may have bought the vespa. Having done 16000+ miles on the Honda 125, I love the Honda, but I intend to restore my white primavera, it's not just a scooter, but a work of art.

I bought my Vespa GTS 250 in 2008 and it's still my ride after 14 years...hasn't aged a bit 'cause all Vespas are unique in they own way and it's still performing well...I currently have more than 60k km on it ( more than 37k miles) and I've seen these engines make up to 150k km so there's still a long way to go. Not good as a daily rider in a wet climate unless you are super fussy about keeping her dry when not riding. Many Vespa owners here polish and admire their scooters for 8 or 9 months of the year and use them only when the summer arrives. I'm not knocking them at all as I have owned a very costly Vespa GT that I rode in hail , rain and snow for a few years until I got sick of the rust popping up all over. I love Vespas and will probably buy a classic 2 stroke at some stage but unless you can dry store your pride and joy , my advice is don't blow 4 grand on a scooter that's left outside all year.
@imothy
@imothy 2 года назад
also, Vespas just keep going and going, they rarely break down, and if you leave them out in the rain for months they aren't going to rust away because the steel is airplane grade thick ass steel that will last 100 years or more. I have a 1971 Vespa rally 180 that i've had since 2003, but it still runs like new, I can leave it sitting for months and then go start it and it will start up first or second kick. Even with our modern crappy ethanol gas sitting for months starts fine through its old carburetor. There is something to be said about Vespa as a product when there are so many vintage ones still in service. When I bought mine I didn't realize it was an investment, because its worth 2-3 times what I paid for it about 20 years ago. But today I've decided I want a GTS, but my Rally 180 will still be with me forever!

Been working on a Piaggio Liberty , rather neglected but what stands out about the non Chinese scooters, is the massive improvement in quality of the parts, scooter body panels are something that often require replacement, Chinese panels are almost impossible to repair and are expensive, Piaggio are expensive as well but can be repaired, and the quality of parts ,engine ,switches etc, are much better . There are good Far Eastern bikes coming onto the market, i've just sold my Peugeot Tweet, silly name out of the way one of the best ive owned , It's actually built by SYN, Taiwanese company, so, if you want a cheap cheerful but short lived bike, go Chinese, quality build long lasted , European named will last you.

The biggest issue with all scooters is replacement parts. Vespa parts will always be around. With other brands, there’s no guarantee. With that said, young people should be aware of the fact that America used to have an excellent scooter company: Cushman. But the company was closed by Washington D.C. as part of a plan to bankrupt America. Cushman could start making scooters again, but Washington doesn’t want people to have cheap transportation.
