Suggest you revisit this. The original recipe called for Kina Lillet, no longer available, which included quinine in the formulation which added a bitterness that the currently available Lillet Blanc does not have. There is a product called Cocchi Americano, which is a different formula, but has a similar taste to Kina Lillet. IMHO and that of many others this substitution really makes the Vesper a much better cocktail and much closer to the taste of Fleming's original concoction. Do enjoy your videos.
@@bacon9151 true recipe was 3 parts gin and shaken. If you're fixing the drink, ok, but this video is neither an improvement nor accurate to the original.
@@bacon9151 I suggest you read the original quote from Ian Fleming about the Vesper. The whole point is for the drink to be obscenely big. Ian Fleming wanted four and a half shots of alcohol. So by dialing the drink down, you're completely missing the point, and thus not making a Vesper.
@@edbangor9163 no, I think you are missing the point. Leandro knows the original dimensions and scaled them down because no other martini on earth(as far as I know) has 4.5 ounces of alcohol in it. It’s not like he’s being completely ignorant of the original. It’s just a practicality thing. I don’t think scaling something down to the degree he did, constitutes another name
And on top of that, the correct way to make the drink is "Stirred, not shaken"! Per Ian Fleming. That got accidentally reversed in the movies and never got corrected. Shaking the drink over ice "Bruises" w/ too much water. A quick stir and pour makes a better Martini. Shaken is not bad, mind you, it does work. It's just not authentic. 😊
3 measure Gordons Gin 1 measure Russian Vodka 1/2 measure Kina Lillet( which is no longer available. Use Kina Blanc instead. Add 3 drops of Angostura bitters to imitate the Quinine taste) Shake over ice, serve in a chilled Martini glass Add a strip of twisted lemon peel. Vesper Martini!
This is a great one to play with. Switch up the ratios. All are awesome cocktails. (Just don’t do three variations in one late afternoon like I did once…!) Also Tempus Fugit’s Quina d’or is way better sub for the original Kona Lillet intended for this cocktail. Seek it out.
Why thought? Some people will get a plain vodka martini because there are people who say they don't like gin. (Ask them what gins they have tried and 90% of the time it's going to be bombay sapphire. That's why they don't like gin, don't be drinking that crap, get yourself a tanqueray or beefeater) But whatever, there are some who just won't like gin. Vodka really doesn't have much of a flavor profile, unless you've been drinking a lot of it for a while, most wouldn't even be able to pick out any small bits of flavor. Gin and vodka are both neutral spirits, some will say gin is just juniper flavored vodka, and that statement is kind of true but also oversimplified. So vodka has very little flavor and gin has flavor from the botanicals, especially juniper. The vesper is going to be predominantly gin flavored because the vodka doesn't have flavor. Maybe if you are using a quality gin and you wanted to make it last longer, so you mix in some cheap vodka? So you are only using 66% gin.
I always tought The Vesper was a crazy big Martini variation bond ordered because he wanted to confuse the card players at the table, and trumfed the cocktail order with the odd "shaken not stirred". It totally confused the other players and made them muche easier to read :)
Worth noting that this isn’t a cocktail that suits being shaken, but does suit being stirred as it’s spirit-forward. It’s quite likely that Ian Fleming chose “shaken, not stirred” because he didn’t know a lot about bartending and it sounded cool.
I thought it was shaken so he can better feel if the drink's been poisoned or not. Remember, in the movie Casino Royale he was poisoned by drinking his first martini, that's why the 2nd time he called for a shakened vodka martini so he could know instantly if it's been poisoned by tasting it.
@@Redmanfms im not sure why i would be a nato bot? Russia is pretty damn close to me and i dont get the reason to founding a terrorist state when there's plenty of other countries selling vodka for a good price
