My faith in humanity gets 10% restored whenever I see or meet elderly people like him who are very woke. Goes to show that a person doesn't always have to be "a product of the times" they lived in. I don’t understand how anyone would not be happy to hear this. Memorial Day was started by black Americans after the union won. How is this not the best version of the history of Memorial Day? As an Iraq veteran I proudly endorse this mans speech.
He was talking about the historical examples of Memorial Day (pre-memorial day), there is no solid “start” of Memorial Day in the US until it was made a national holiday. Many other similar ceremonies occurred around the same time by different groups.
It was called decoration day and many towns did it by laying flowers on soldiers graves. This was mostly popular in the south but northern states held different ceremonies. It wasn’t started by former slaves particularly but one town in South Carolina did. So the LTC was sort of correct but also wrong. Still a-shame someone silenced him.

Second, freed slaves would purchase their family members such as a child or spouse in order to gain them their freedom. Also, if you actually did your research you would have looked at the percentage for each slaveholding state and found that on average almost 30% of families owned slaves. In some states such as Mississippi it was almost 50%. So please stop repeating the same bs you hear from far right media and do the research yourself.
