Health and Safety Aron here again 😊 Before you add scrap to the crucible I think your meant to leave it on top for a few mins to make sure there’s no water trapped inside , as if there is the water can boil when it hits the molten metal and explode molten metal everywhere . Hi Ian, I enjoyed the outtakes towards the end! the weight of the crucible is based on a particular metal, I forget which but maybe copper, someone else said the same, so that table from the manual shows in your 10kg crucible what mass of the other metals will fit, so you can weigh it beforehand. As for cleaning it, you have a different crucible for each metal. The fairly eat through gas , so unless you have something nice to make or the gas is free ;-) ingots are a waste of time and gas, especially if the anvil yard won't take them.

Aluminium is around a third as dense as copper, so the 3.1 refers to a 3.1KG capacity for aluminium. Gold is a bit over twice as heavy so comes in at 22KG. That is a lot of gold! Cheers for the review.

A fun review Ian, thanks. Can't wait till I start casting. I'm sure by now you've figured out the mass of the ingot depends on the density of the metal you're melting. If you filled that crucible with lead, the ingots would be considerably heavier than the aluminum.

Enjoyed the review Ian. . To say you had your hands full with a new product, a new process and the production of a video on your hands you did very well. Just one thing on safety. I appreciate you had your hands full and you cant think of everything, but to you and any other newbie reading this always try to keep your working floorspace clear of clutter and for your first time do a dry run pour with no molten metal in the crucible . Work out the best places for tools, molds etc for a smooth safe sequence of use. I was watching through my fingers as you shuffled through scattered tools and almost tripped on the gas hose ! 😮😅 The most scary incident is when your foot slid on a rolling dross rod ! 😮😂 You recognise that cans are junk really. The radiator was better . It depends what you want to do with your ingots. If you are looking to make castings you will get the best results from an aluminium alloy that is made for casting. So breaking up old castings such as scrap alloy wheels would be ideal.. Extruded/plate and your radiator are made from wrought aluminium . Better than cans, but still not ideal for making sand castings. You are more likely to get defects.. The piece of round bar you made was impressive and could be very useful in the lathe. Don't know if you have faced and turned it yet, but if its half decent you have a good product. As you may know round bar is very expensive to buy. Yours will be great for lathe projects. . Doesn't matter if it has a few flaws in it for diy projects. We aren't building aeroplanes and bridges are we ? After finishing my comments I'll check to see if you have made a video of you turning it.. I've made round bar but nowhere near the diameter of yours. Again really enjoyed the video ! Regards John.

So many things I can comment on and give tips about but overal I think you did great for your first time using this furnace!. Good review too. About the 10KG crucible though: those are based on the weight of Brass or copper I think so big difference with Aluminium. I think the graph in the manual shows this. Thanks for the shout out Ian, although I think my audience is a bit to small for sponsorship... for now at least. But I am definitely open for it 😅👍 Can't wait to see more of your melting and casting projects using this furnace.

You can coat the Cao wool with a product called Satonite. Works great. You mix it up using the instructions and paint it on.

I started doing this with copper and brass but the scrap yard didn't want to take it because they couldn't guarantee what was inside it !

I have seen other videos of furnaces, where they coated the insulation, and it worked and lasted well.

the chart shows the crucible will hold 10ckg of copper or 3.1 kg of aluminum since it is so much lighter by volume.

Did you not get the clay powder to mix with water and coat the inside with first before firing up? I did with the devil forge. 👍💚💛❤️

great vid Ian. Did Vevor supply heat cement for kaowool liner for furnace? Also you need to heat up new crucible & let it cool, before you melt metal. you can sieve the dross & remelt it to get more aluminium. clean the crucible soon after pouring, as it is a lot easier. If you have as crucible for each metal that you're melting makes it easier. Aluminium is an easy starter metal to melt. Copper takes lot longer & higher temperature. Brass is a bit harder, as you need respirator, cause the zinc fumes that come with melting brass are not user friendly

Nice one Ian I got lots of cans , that melting Furness would be handy to melt all of them. Question is how much is the value of the ingots and hoo buy them you can answer that question in a video Ian.

it works melted stuff don't clean alloys ,none do your slag isa lot but as you say salt on pewter you use a form of washing powerder to clean it but my mind as it is as forgot and i melt shed loads of it lol i will add it you want to cast your own custom parts at higher volume this looks a nice machine .I will say this nothing wrong in pointing out little small minor problems mate if I was still in the house with the three gardens and three allotment I would have got one lol beer cans to custom signs art its' a" BUSINESS IN A BOX" NICE REVIEW IAN NICE VEVOR

The Numbers you refer to are the maximum weight for that metal at the volume of the crucible. Hence copper 10kg and Ali being about 3 times lighter gives you 3.1kg.

When it hot to scrape it clean.

Good video Sir. I’m no expert but I think the standard for crucibles is you don’t clean em. You have one for each material you want to melt. They are quite fragile once they see a few heat cycles.

Hi Ian. I've the same furnace, here in Ireland. How did you stop the 'sputtering'? I have this issue with mine (even with a brand new barrel of propane) and it's very annoying. Happens after about 20 minutes of running the furnace. Experimenting with PSI leads nowhere. Thought I needed a new furnace as it's taken a battering, but re- thinking this after seeing your new one do the same thing. Surely there's something I'm missing? No clogs etc in any of the inlets. Hiya Ian Before you melt the metal weigh it and then after you pour your ingots weigh them to get an accurate loss percentage Since aluminum is so light you probably didn't have anywhere near 10kg to start with

You got about what the Chart said you were going to get. 10k Copper but 3k Aluminum .

The crucible will hold 10 Kg of copper. People confuse volume with weight.

Did you weigh the aluminium before you melted it in the furnace? Did you lose much? is it worth it.❤

How much does the gas cost? Actually, I know. The cost of Calor has gone up way less than the natural gas used in the house boiler and the oven. She, has got me boiling up veggies on my man cave, fry up stove now. I don't like gas tape. Beware that you must wind it on the same direction as the threads wind on, or it wont work. Reverse, like you said for Calor. A wee bit of "furry"😆 liquid and leak test. Rocol gel is better than tape, imo. Are even smaller versions available for smaller amounts of "other" metals? I'll email ya. If the cost of gas used means more storage space and makes it compact for transportation, then it may be worthwhile? Cost benefit.

The only problem I have with casting aluminium is that you spend more on gas than the ingot is worth. Yards rarely take ingots as well so not for me but great review

You don't clean the crucibles , it's not worth it and you'll never get it properly clean for a pure pour of another metal, also cleaning can damage the crucible. You simply have several crucibles for different metals and never mix them.

Are you putting this gas furnace in your house or where you putting it also you going to use it to heat the shed

M8 lol safety safety get that gas cable away from your feet. You were stepping over it so it’s a trip hazard. The furnace was not that stable either. Move the gas and cable out of the way from your feet. Get another crucible and use one for copper and one for alley you will be able to melt 10kg of copper in the crucible but lifting it out with toes tongs not advisable. Keep the lid closed more and drop the tins through the hole in the top. Use a long steel rod for mixing the melted metal. Always uses gloves as your going to burn your hands dropping thoes tins in. Also melting cans is fun but yes loads of dross.

Hi Ian Glad found your channel being uk I’m Wanting to melt 9k gold but no videos on it I have a crucible and flux and firebricks My only torches at the moment is a mapp torch Or a roofers torch a detail torch with big gas bottle Any tips for me please or will I need this furnace or a oxy turbo kit 😢 I understand mapp can melt pure gold and silver But 9k has copper and nickel so needs different gas torch Thanks

I would wear a respirator without that insulation being treated with something, apparently those fibers are deadly for the lungs.

I have a home made melt furnace and don't think melting cans is worth the gas it takes. The best scrap in my opinion is automotive castings. Should be able to get them from your local repair shop. You really need to coat the insulation to stop the fibers from getting into your lungs. There seem to be several versions of the 10kg melt furnace. I suspect that if you melted copper a full to the top crucible full would be closer to 10kg. I've found casting to be both rewarding and frustrating. Look up ways to limit hydrogen defects. Get some personal protective gear. Cover the concrete so there isn't an a chunk blown out if you have a small spill.
