Japan has gone full circle: instead of spamming the problem with wild fanciful technology, they brute forced it with manual labor, opaque panels, and lamps
hmmm... I wonder how well do they get paid in Japan? I mean that's a LOT of people... I guess building trains makes a lot of money but damn... there's like over 50 people on set not to mention the post production
The Mario movie is the epitome of American corporate cash grabs hahaha, YMS did a great review on it, the freaking Minion studio crapped out a cookie cutter vanilla movie for babies and everyone flipped out at the bare minimum effort movie because it has a marketable character. Honestly for all its flaws the old Mario movie had more creativity, style and originality hahah.
Thank you Nick for that Sotetsu commercial, absolutely amazing filmmaking and artistry in that shot. Sometimes you see a shot like that and the point of the shot is to just get it done, but sometimes the point of the shot is the difficulty and artistry and complexity of the process. The more you think about it the most amazing it becomes. The lighting, the camera rig control, the moving set, the DOZENS of actors who all have to get it right in one take. Sometimes the artistry is the point, and the point is the artistry.
That Sotetsu commercial about got me teary eyed. Wow. Had they ended it without the dad and the girl still being bitter. I probably would have shed a tear.
Yeah they should have made it where after he looks back down the train to see himself with her as a child, the camera pans to the left as if looking from his point of view to see her grown up outside the train doors, smiling and gesturing to him leave the train and start the day with her!
Go watch the full commercial. They’re not still bitter at the end, though she’s become more the adult, and in his sentimentality and age, he’s the little boy.
I have a 3 and a half year old daughter and it got a lump in my throat thinking about her growing up and I won't have her as Daddy's little girl forever.
@@leebeeskee same here with my 2 years old daughter. She's already saying she's a grown girl because she start to go on the toilet. They grow to fast...
Me too. What a way to announce a new express service to Tokyo. That's why she stays on the train, she's going to college? new job? in Tokyo while the dad is getting off at his usual stop for work.
@@leebeeskee Shit, mine is 5 and every once in a while I tell her that she's my baby then she goes, I'm 5! But then I tell her that she'll be my baby forever.
I absolutely love you guys a show. I know you probably won't see this but seriously. I love that you are fans. I've learned a great deal about special effects. And you guys are just flat-out entertaining. You just seem like real down-to-earth fans. That's always refreshing to watch. You don't shitt talk, but honestly critique. A skill that seems to be missing from most of the internet.
the crew’s ability to absolutely demolish a vfx shot, but doing it so respectfully and authentically, is what allows them to have the vfx supervisor of said shot in the show only a few weeks later.
18:31 Actually, Super Mario Bros 1993 wasn't nominated for Best Visual Effects, it was shortlisted to get a nomination. 🙂 It lost out on getting a nomination to Cliffhanger, Jurassic Park, and The Nightmare Before Christmas.
That train commercial and its making is so incredibly Japanese. They are on the forefront of technology, but what makes them truly stand out is every single person's passion and dedication to the craft. I love that!
@@over9000andback But they still create all that new technology, they just don’t use it. :-) Or maybe they are so fond of it that they are still using it after 50 years.
Never in a million years would I have guessed that I would be crying over a train commercial I saw on your channel lol. Also, that whole behind the scenes is a beautiful production ballet!
Honestly, the BTS for that train commercial blew my mind three different times while watching it. Also, I can't be the only one who can't believe that episode 100 is on the horizon! Keep up the amazing work, guys!
I can't wait to see you guys do the full Super Mario Bros movie once it's out of theaters and in homes. It was great hearing how truly important the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie was, even if it will be forever a mess on the story and aesthetic front. It still has a special place in my heart nonetheless and the history behind its effects cemented that even further.
@@JustTheWarning I'd argue because it's full animation there's more wild things you can do with cg. You still have to take into account lighting, choreography, etc.
@@JustTheWarning every once in a while they do a video reacting to animation. This film would be perfect for that. Mario may be fully animated, but that doesn't mean there aren't interesting techniques to talk about. People who work in animation still need to come up with creative solutions for special effects, animation, lighting, modeling, etc. for animated films, just like visual effects artists do for live action films.
That train commercial is amazing! Knowing it’s been done practical makes me have even more respect for the shot. I mean, practical is just so cool looking and comes shows the creativity of the people behind it. If possible get Markus Rothkranz on the couch. He did some very cool practical work back in the day.
That Train Commercial gave me goosebumps all over. What an amazing piece of cinema Edit: Whoa I was right about it being different actors instead of CGI, I figured the simplest answer was probably it.
what makes me stoked is wrens dragonsteel shirt haha, you always see him wearing the bridge 4 shirt but always cool seeing him rock cosmere merch, best damn series ever. he got a lot of people into it years back for that audible ad promoting mistborn and stormlight, now he just needs a wax and wayne shirt
The thing about trains in japan is that, because trains are a huge part in people's life. Very little people own a car, but common to go anywhere with the train in here. That's why there's so many people love trains and will just go on trips only to experience different trains. It's more then a transportation, but a thing that effects ppls daily lives. Also, the title of the commercial (which is written as a anniversary video for a new line that started last month) was "The scenery of father and daughter", and the line before the father walked out is "Tokyo, so far huh" "eh, but so fast wasn't it?" "I guess so", which is sure telling not about trains but the relationship and times that passed. This just shows how great Japanese capture life imo.
"Trains are so deep" Well considering how integral they are to Japanese society, I can only imagine this resonated MUCH more over there than it does here. This commercial was great though, and the story telling was amazing. Huge props to everyone who was involved in making it happen.
Okay Sam, lemme explain how much you exaggerated that percentage. the Bourne Ultimatum is ~9500 seconds long, and the shot in question is ~4 seconds long. That shot accounts for ~0.04% of the movie. As opposed to 0.0000000001%, which would account for ~0.0000000093 seconds, or ~9.3 nanoseconds of the movie. There are a billion nanoseconds in a single second. A single frame at 60 fps is ~16 milliseconds , which is 16 million nanoseconds. So that means, your percentage estimation could repeat itself 1.7 million times within a single frame.
Excellent job, as always! A great example of Chinese cinema w/ VFX is "Wandering Earth." It's a good movie, and it has a host of really good FX for you guys to react to.
The "CHARGE " Blender short would be awesome for the VFX series. As well as *Aslan from the Chronicles of Narnia!* where you could do a comparison to the "live action" Lion King. Also at the end of second Chronicles of Narnia movie there's a big water creature, so it might be cool to see what you think about that. Maybe also, Max Schneider's Gibberish music video, the editing kinda breaks my brain there. The *last agni kai fight from ATLA* would be perfect for for the Animators React. It's so stunning! And for stuntmen react It would be cool to see you react to the duel from "Potop", it's really good sword fight (tho technically it's sabers i think)
I know they can't do reactions for music videos(that's just asking for a copyright strike), but that Gibberish video is so cool, thanks for reminding me about it! I remember rewatching it so many times when it came out to try and figure out how it all fit together.
A couple corrections about Super Mario Bros movie - It was placed in consideration for an Oscar nomination, but did not make the final 3 nomination list. - Itwas the first to use Cineon "purely for VFX", but the first film scanned by Cineon was Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.
Yep, scanning and restoring the full length feature Snow White was no easy task. The Cineon team really went the extra mile. I still have the 35mm film frame encased in Lucite that was given to each member of the team in recognition of their hard work.
For the Sosetsu Train part, I am convinced that people in the entertainment industry in Japan have the best storyboarders in the world. It goes from this commercial, to movies, and especially anime. They just have great imagination. However, a lot of times I seen the final products just fizzle out due to not having the money and resources compared to Hollywood.
I honestly thought it was multiple takes of the same actor playing the father and then it turns out it they got a bunch of different guys to all look exactly like the same guy.
@@Vinny792 Find 50 people who have the same physical build and make them look like the same person through make-up and costumes with slight variations in order to make him progressively older was a great challenge.
100%! taking a kids video game and saying hey, what if this was a teen cyberpunk movie and we hired some music video directors who are into fractals, plus the set designer from Blade Runner - it's so much more fun than a lot of current stuff because it took that kind of risky, naive curveball approach.
@@lamaidalaakapinkcrocodile7527 yeah same here. clint can complete anyone in corridor, Clint with wren goat, Clint with sam goat, basically Clint can pair up with anyone and he gonna make it entertaining 😂💯🔥
For animators react you should look at the fight between zuko and zhao at the end of season one. I had been watching avatar for years but my girlfriend pointed out how AMAZING the lighting was in that scene. The fire lights up the characters in a beautiful way and I’d love to hear your guys’ take on it
You guys should react to the cow scene in O Brother, Where Art Thou? The cows hit by the police car looked so realistic, Digital Domain had to show the American Humane Society how they were digitally created.
I remember being 5 years old being so excited to see the Mario Brothers movie back in the 90's. It was that and Ninja Turtles that were etched into my memory for eternity. God I love that Mario movie lol
The Sadness is the most insane and unhinged movie I've seen in a while. Plot and special effects both lol, It's Taiwanese and definitely worth taking a look at!
I had watched the original mario movie last night and then this popped up. Never knew it was basically the pioneer for VFX today. Also that train scene blew me away with how much effort went into it.
Damn ... All this time we've been shittin on the old Mario movie and turns out it is a very important milestone for the VFX industry! Mind blown! Also Nikos laugh is just so freakin awesome! Can someone make a comp of that??!
Here some Chinese movies for your VFX reaction: - The Wandering Earth huge 2019 blockbuster. - Moon Man , a comedy with a lot of VFX "on the moon" - Detective Chinatown 3 have some pretty cool scenes to check. Will give more when I remember 😅
I can't remember if you have look at it before but "Wandering Earth" has plent of great CGI and VFX shots as well as being a pretty entertaining movie :D
4:05 The best part about the scene with Jason Bourne disappearing is that you can see Matt Damon crouched behind that little car lol. I noticed it the last time while watching the movie and now I can’t unsee it.
Did anyone else notice tha Sam had tears in his eyes around 09:43-09:48? The fact, that they dind't brought it up, makes me think that Sam got hit real deep and felt or remembered something accoring to that topic he encountered personally.
Fact check: the 1993 Mario movie WAS NOT NOMINATED for an Oscar. It was submitted for consideration, but not nominated. You can look it up and the only three nominees for 1993 were Jurassic Park, Cliffhanger, and The Nightmare Before Christmas
An interesting Chinese movie with some interesting visual effects is "The Wandering Earth". Insane premise for a movie and the sequel has just come out.
You are such a great channel, you make my day whenever I watch this. I would love if you could look at the Star Trek movies (old or new), that would be great!
That commercial was insane. Not just because it had a similar vibe as the Intro to Up!, but who would have thought they would like hire 200 actors to play out these moments simultaneously... that is unexpected in a world that would try so hard to make it work with CGI. Thanks for sharing!
in the first one, the facade of the building is mirrored left/right, look at the power cables going into the wall. (they change side from how they shot it, to how it was in the film)
the shot you guys used from the first Bourne movie of him disappearing behind the little blue truck. If you slow it down you can see him running behind it all hunched over lol. I laugh every time, but I love that movie.
There is a crazy effects shot in Wakanda Forever that is super simple, but amazingly executed, when Shuri lifts herself out of the water in the ancestral plane, in a white dress, completely dry. Probably just reversed footage, but really well done.
PLEASE do a vfx review of the Wandering Earth II!!! It's a 2023 Chinese Sci-fi film that basically single-handedly established China's Sci-fi movie industry.
I think The Wandering Earth 1 and 2 are pretty good choices for VFX analysis. Probably some of the best VFX in Chinese cinema ever. Hugely popular over there specifically for the VFX.
Got to do something special for the 100th episode. I'd say you should bring someone in for it, a special guest, if at all possible. Hope you guys continue to grow, cheers!
In the entire opening scene of Red Notice, any shot containing The Rock is comp'd in. He didn't want to be near any BG during the big cough, that he filmed his scenes separately
so glad u guys did the train sequence~ i recommended it the last time, want to secretly hope u guys saw my comment and watched it! thanks for featuring it either way!
Chinese version of Three Body Problem. They slice apart a full ocean liner. Beautiful simulation shot. Western version of this show will be on Netflix this year.
The Sotetsu train ad is an informercial to tell people that going to Tokyo is faster now. Previously they had to change trains to get to Tokyo, but by the end of the ad, they’re taking a straight train. Which also means that the dad has a shorter time with his daughter on the train. Which is also quite sad.
