Yes! This shots are probably pretty simple in terms of execution but standsm out purely due to great art direction

Funny thing, Gavin Free did the slow motion shots in Dredd, and they know him and already called him on an episode to talk about his work on Sherlock Holmes.

the door flying off is kinda cartoony to me, like they sped up the footage to make it faster kinda thing.

Technically speaking that kind of effect can be done without the raw footage, but regardless it does look like they used said raw footage to achieve the best look possible. Film and video are rarely discarded for major productions nowadays and are almost always archived. The shot they used for Lizard wasn’t even in the original film it was an unused take from a different angle.

@@ParzivalTheThird Ok, but the shot where they used Sandman turning back to his human form was almost clearly the same one where in the original film his hand was turning to mud. I assume they'd had to use the raw footage for this, no? And that's from 2007 or even 2006, when it was filmed.

The 2nd one was filmed partially at the Atlanta Beach, which was an artificial beach constructed for the 96 Olympics, to have the circular beach in the arena. The VFX in those shots is incredible, I think the only thing that isn't created is the beach itself. The entire background and I'm sure lots of the stuff in the water is CG.

It IS the intended result and Its so frustrating that they don't realize it. It's a stylized attempt at portraying latency in like an online video game. I think its super cool, and exactly what they were going for. They wanted to try something different than just re-doing an old effect that they already proved they could do perfectly, even back then.

@@retroradtacular The mismatched framerate is the intended part, the terrible rotoscoping, bad exposure and lighting is not the intended part. Unless the goal is to make it look like low budget cgi, in which case they succeeded.

I assumed the eyes were makeup and the nose down was cgi. I remember totally trying to figure it out when I was watching it for the first time

The lip movements didn't look right. His lips needed to form a momentary seal when he speaks a "p". That's not actually possible when you have adjacent exposed teeth (in this case going both up and down). Nivellen's lips don't conform around his teeth, and we expect to see that when he talks. I realize it's a lot of work, but lips don't just go up and down when we talk. They are so agile that deaf people can tell what you are saying from looking at your lips! Watch Nivellen again -- you can't do that, his lips are too stiff. Human lips are more compliant, and we actively use our teeth to support them. People missing front teeth have speech impediments that you can hear. There's another problem, which is that teeth can't be exposed all the time, because they'd dry out and then shatter. Water isn't enough -- dentin requires saliva to maintain toughness and mend microfractures. Even the big canines of a lion or tiger or the protruding lowers of a hippo are covered and kept wet by loose lips that fold over them nearly all the time. These long lips are pulled back when fighting or eating, leading to the characteristic wrinkles that we associate with fierceness.

I was just about to comment, this ide suggest looking at the ring gate explosions (season end of season 5 and 6), and some of the anti gravity liquid effects. also maybe the some season 1 effects as well as the weird creatures from season 6 and the proto molecule creature.

@@badwolverinex17 the planet drop scene from the last episode is pretty rough, one of the worst scenes I've seen in a while but everything else has always been passable at the very least IMO.

From what I can gather the story takes a leap 30 years into the future, so the current storyline with Holden, Amos, Naomi are at their natural conclusion. Think it was a case of going out on a high point for the actors too, but the creative team have said never say never to a return. 🙏

I just dropped by to recommend the Borg Queen's head attachment scene too. A very good effect in its time, and it still holds up after a quarter of a century!

I desperately want them to talk about Deep Space Nine S5E6 "Trials and Tribble-ations" The way they combined old footage and re-created sets to create a time travel story that seamlessly integrates stuff that actually happened on a prior show blows my mind every time.

That's a great idea. That was my biggest issue with the new one, still loved it though.

The heart attack from me was knowing he *had* to be dead, and then seeing him walk out. Impossible! There's no *way* he could've survived! But, if anyone *could* have, it would be Gus... And there was nothing else in the show to suggest that kind of VFX budget. It was absolutely amazing filmmaking.

It's been years and I'm still kinda mad I got that shot spoiled before I was able to see the episode.

The whole time I was watching Nevallen, I was trying to figure out where prosthetics ended and CGI began. So once I saw a BTS video and learned that his whole face was CGI with mocap...I was even more impressed.

Oh my gosh! I just posted a comment about this and then happen to see this comment. Yes! I loved the show for the most part and still kinda pissed at Netflix for canceling the show, they did Jim Henson company and all the people who worked so passionately on the show dirty fr. The director and producer was told by Netflix the show was canceled 60 days after the show was released but were told not to say anything publicly for another few months from what I've heard.

I agree one added thing I didn’t notice immediately was the skeksis tongue being added with CG.

Tbh I think that the crash physics are the best ever done, only complaint I have is that the car doors and stuff don’t fall off. Cars, when in high speed crash, do seem very light irl. Cars don’t weigh that much in the grand scheme of things when talking about 100‘s of miles per hour

Some of the zero-g/spacewalk effects in particular would be good to look at, like Naomi's jump from the Chetzemoka at the end of Season 5, or Amos walking around the outside of the Roci early on in Season 6.

Doesanyone have some specific examples? despite being a massive gaming nerd im drawing a blank of the top of my head.

@@kodaxmax I think of things like explosions and effects from the Killzone games, or some of the amazing shaders used in Half Life Alyx on full bottles of liquid. I'd love to see them go into details of why an explosion in one game feels so good and another in another game feels so limp (Mercenaries 1 vs Mercs 2 is a good comparison).

Explosions in games are usually simulated in real time and/or artists don't have the time or resources to be able to run complex explosion simulations in games. Its usually down to the technical limitation of a game (whereas a movie can be pre-rendered and edited on top of) and the hardware limits. A game made to run on a lower spec system or won't be able to have as complex particle systems as others, and smaller companies won't usually have the time and resources to develop new particle systems that look better. Lots of games companies also like to keep in-house techniques to themselves, so methods to make explosions can differ a lot I imagine. The VFX tech to make films and games, while similar in art, have very different tech requirements and considerations. Its hard to compare practises in films to games because of this.

@@ZavalasAgent this is all at least partially true, but is also irrelevant? An explosion in a game, regardless of the technical side of things has a final result and a "feel" to it. Two explosions may be simulated in exactly the same way in the same physics engine across two different games, but the artistry that goes into them (effects like particles, smoke and fire sprites, physics objects interacting with that effect, other smaller effects like dirt or shock waves, sounds, etc) can all be drastically different and affect how the end product feels.

@@xGamermonkeyx Yes and an explosion with all those things would require a lot more research and power behind it, unless it's stylised a certain way of course because that can have big effects on the final feel. My point is it is difficult to go into VFX in a game from a purely film understanding because it isn't all about the way the final product may look or sound, simulating in real time in 3D space is a lot different. Like how someone on a high end PC will have a much different experience to someone on a lower spec console for example. Whereas with a film it's one video. Games will usually have very strict budget on how detailed an effect can be, how many polygons can be used in a particle system, how many background Sims are occuring... Etc. There's just so much more to consider tbh that I think would be better for maybe a more gamedev perspective rather than purely one from movies. It's hard to explain what I mean but yeah xD

I think this scene is also referencing an earlier line of dialogue in the movie where a member of the focus groups specifically says they should do bullet time again. In the context of the whole movie taking old ideas and subverting them and making them different, this scene is then doing “bullet time” again. The same idea, different execution, so it’s not even trying to replicate the visuals of the first movie.

Hm. I don't know about your opinion Nicky - sure, the world is digital, but the Matrix films were grounded in some sort of dark and gloomy reality of sorts. Of course, when Neo would bend physics to fight a bunch of Agent Smiths, sure, it would look kinda weird and digital, which is fitting for the subject matter -- but what this terrible, terrible film does is completely take away any of the aesthetic cues of the last films. It spits all over the last films. Not even the colour palette or design is similar, at all. It's a complete shambles.

@@douglascollett7775 yeah dog you just have a different opinion on something none of us created. my opinion based on the evidence: this is a whole new matrix with a whole new asshole in charge and he literally rewrote physics and turned half the population into programs in order to achieve his goals. the analyst dude basically copied and pasted the Neo mods into his own files and rewrote physics so neo wouldnt be as strong. that might be why neos bullet catching was the only viable defense, everything else was planned for.
