Indie filmmaking: doing visual effects or SFX shots with miniatures.
This video was done using a 1/48 scale model kit. It was shot on a Canon 650D/Rebel T4i and assembled in Adobe After Effects. The rotors were animated using the Element 3D plugin for After Effects.

This is how CGI should be used but NOOOO gotta do the whole fucking thing. Has anyone seen Moon -2009? Those were scale models with CGI used for lens flares, dust and space stars.

2:08 Looked fine without the grade - I don't get this modern trend of distorting natural colors. In fact, to me, the pre-grade version looks more real, since it's in natural color. The grading over-emphasizes the shadows.
@IndependentVFX
@IndependentVFX 7 лет назад
I think I agree with you! I totally overdid the grade - I was trying to get that Ridley Scott Black Hawk Down or Body of Lies grade. But the ungraded version is definitely better
@sixstanger00
@sixstanger00 7 лет назад
I'm getting old, I guess. The color in the original Indiana Jones trilogy is rich, natural, & vibrant, while the KotCS color is heavily graded with orange. So much so that in the opening shot where the Russians approach the gate, there's a wide shot showing a distant skyline, and the blue sky is literally mud-brown. Disgusting. One of my all time favorite films, _Lawrence of Arabia,_ used natural colors and had some absolutely gorgeous wide shots of the desert landscape.
@sixstanger00
@sixstanger00 7 лет назад
BTW, forgot to mention - the shot looked spectacular! So much more believable when a proper mix of practical & CG FX are used. Looks better than most big budget films, IMO.

Haha, I hear you - Im 37. Ive always felt there was a golden age of film making in the 80s and 90s that really set the benchmark. There arent many contemporary films that have managed to reach the same level.

The shadows on the helicopter were one of the details I didnt cover in the tutorial - but creating them is quite simple. Here is a brief description: - duplicate the helicopter layer and use the "fill" effect to colour it black - make sure this black helicopter layer is above the colour helicopter in the layer stack - adjust the opacity of the black layer to around 10% - then add a wiggle expression to jitter the opacity of this black layer to make it flicker I hope that makes sense

It feels like decade old tutorials like this look super outdated nowadays. But with Independent VFX, all of his videos stand the test of time and still look fabulous to this day.

The sound FX of the helicopter were recorded at an airshow - from a video clip of a helicopter. We have a Super Hind helicopter here in South Africa that appears at airshows from time to time, but you could use the audio from any helicopter that you can find.

Rotors were modelled in Lightwave, but I can highly reccommend Blender - its a free 3D app. I rendered the blades in Element because its so much faster with the motion blur and allows me work on the project as a whole inside After Effects

Impressed at what Element 3d can render out actually. What did you use to model the rotor blades with? And how come you didn't render it in that package instead? Lovely work though... I love the blended CG and physical models... they work beautifully

Only suggestion I would have is have a slight Heat Wave added to the background behind the the helicopter and foreground. Nothing heavy, but something that would create a subtle difference when looking at the edge of the foreground mountain and the background mountain.

Why does everyone seem to assume, that after effects is pre-installed? It promises selfmadable in the title, then it demands expensive pro software as a matter of course, although this can be done with free software alternatives, too.
@IndependentVFX
@IndependentVFX 6 лет назад
After Effects is actually very affordable when you compare it to other professional software like Nuke. But yes - absolutely, this type of compositing can be done for with free software - you should check out HitFilm and Fusion.

@IndependentVFX
@IndependentVFX 10 лет назад
Yes Charles, you are corrcet - I forgot to cover that. Basically you make a duplicate of the helicopter model layer, make it slightly darker than the original and then you animate the new layers opacity to flicker or flash on and off. Keep it very subtle though.

@IndependentVFX
@IndependentVFX 7 лет назад
The more detail the better - spend as much time as you can on it. Personally, I dont bother with any cockpit detials or details the camera wont see. Then, yes - there are certain details that are impractical or impossible to do for real, so those that can be enhanced or added in post.
