Via Ferrata fall - Rock climbing is the reason why I almost fell on Via Ferrata twice

List of Via Ferrata shown in this video:
Italy
- Adventure Climb Via Ferrata (I am clipping the carabiners on a sharp vertical / Level D)
Romania
- Amfiteatrul Zmeilor Via Ferrata (most of the footage / Level D)
- Spirala Muierilor Via Ferrata (dark top, rope on top of the backpack / Level D)
- Wild Ferenc Via Ferrata (I while climbing dressed in red top and green trousers / Level D)
Out of all the reasons that almost made me fall on a Via Ferrata, trying to rock climb is the main trigger.
On Via Ferrata falling is not an option. Falls on Via Ferrata are dangerous and rock climbing a Via Ferrata does exactly that, increases the probability of a fall by a lot.

A very good point about falling on via ferrata. Falling in a climbing route, depending on various factors, might not be as dangerous as it is on VF and it should be avoided.

New subscriber! I've never done a VF but I am looking to do so. You make an excellent point about the difference between VF and rock climbing - one is designed for falls and the other is not!

Thank you so much and welcome to the club. I hope you will enjoy Via Ferrata as much I or the people I know do. Will be great to hear back from you once you do it. My enthusiasm after first time climbing a Via Ferrata lasted for a couple of good months. Then it progressed in the passion of today but initially I could not think at anything else than Via Ferrata.

On a via ferrata, you do not fall (unless you are having an accident)! It's not an option with a soft brake like when you are rock climbing; falls into a via ferrata rope set are the hardest, even with the (required) fall brake.

Via ferratas are designed to be via ferratas and not climbing routes. For this reason, if you are attached to the steel cable, you often do not have the same grip options that you would have if you were free climbing. Trying to climb like a climbing route, therefore, is unnecessarily risky and makes no sense because they are 2 different practices. Cheers

Rather than a loose open hook Carabiners, why don't Via Ferratta use some sort of Carabiner that grips cable tightly and can only be slid in one direction? I think these are called ascenders?
@JetSetYourself
@JetSetYourself Год назад
There are a couple of difficulties for such a device. To build Via Ferrata that will accommodate such device will become extremely expensive. Then, is a matter of physics; very difficult on a steel cable to roll such a breaking device. From a practicability point of view for you as a climber will become cumbersome and tiring to handle such device. You have to remember that on a single Via Ferrata you will make at least 100 anchor point transitions. Then, you have the French style Via Ferrata (the newer and safer Via Ferrata are a mix of German and French style). Such a device is not practical. There is on the market something trying to do this but given the reality is not practical and also, it puts life in danger.

I saw a beginner fall on a guided VF route 2 people above me but she was lucky that it was overhanging and did not hit the next person in the chain, plus had an old style non-expanding VF set so it hurt but she didn't fall too far and could therefore recover.

Do you mean that on via Ferrata you should always have both hands holding the cable when climbing vertically?
@JetSetYourself
@JetSetYourself 11 месяцев назад
I definitely don't say this. How and what you hold on a vertical depends on circumstance. It can be that you will grab the cable with both hands or it might be that one hand will grab the cable while the other will use the pegs, rungs or natural holds. It really depends. But, let's make it a rule, on the vertical, to have at least one hand on the cable (this can keep you away from trouble big time).

First we would like to say that we fully enjoy your videos. They are very informative and your passion for the sport is very evident. So, thank you for the time and effort you put into making these videos. My partner and I have become passionate about Vía Farratas after completing only our 1st one. It was a 450m K2/K3 with two short K4 Variantes which we completed easily. We are outdoors people and we like to prepare ourselves for the unexpected therefore we carry the items we think we might need in cases of emergency. Of course there are always situations that may arise unexpectedly. We have searched the internet and we have not found enough videos that describe what to do in the event of a fall on a Vía Ferrata. That would first include what type of rescue equipment a climber should carry and how to carry out a rescue should one of your party experience a fall. If the victim of the fall ends up in a position where they are unable to grab the mountain or the cable what can be done to assist this person. This would also include falling from a cable bridge where the fall victim would be suspended in mid air. I think it would be of great service to the Vía Ferrata community if you could describe these aspects of Vía Ferrata. I know you would do an excellent job, but this is only a suggestion. Thank you in advance.

Hello. I only now read your message. I don't know what happened that I've missed it. Thank you for being so appreciative and following my journey consistently. I will make time and put together a video that will answer all your questions (and more). It happens that I already started filming on the topic. I only need to make it complete. To touch a point on the topic; I many times climb solo. I recently climbed the second highest mountain peak in Romania. Being so late into the autumn you have to be prepared for the worst. It is why I pack (next to many rescue items) a bivy and a sleeping back. In case something happens that I'm still alive and I can manage to access the backpack but not to move until help arrives (or until I completely get out of the situation) I need to make sure I can handle low temperatures (they are the worst enemy when you sit still on the mountain). The more you try to cover the heavier your backpack will get. You will reach a point where you have to make choices. I will explain through the video what this is about. See you soon!

@@Mr4Strings Hello. I was out doing Via Ferrata and also climbing (mountaineering). I have something like six weeks of recorded activities that I still have to find time, edit and put on the channel. Because I work full time sometimes is hard to get things done. I'm trying not to rush it because I'm not that good at editing and if I also rush it will end up a mess. Unfortunately, I'm alone and it is hard to believe that this will ever change. For my age and situation, I don't think to ever be able find a life partner or to becoming a dad and in this way share these activities with loved ones. When it comes to friends the situation is not different. I live in London while I'm doing all these activities in Europe. Nobody will ever come with me because I'm differently integrated socially in the UK and in Romania for example, I don't know anyone. In Italy, all the people I know are business owners that will always be too busy or not interested. I take safety and preparedness seriously because I understand how sudden nature will try to kill you. The smallest mistake and you are gone for good. When you go day after day and expose yourself to the elements the probability of committing errors increases. If you take it lightly, with the increased probability of committing errors the more you go outdoors the chance of something bad happening increases even more. Two days ago, I was climbing the second highest mountain peak in Romania (solo climbing on a bad weather) and two things happened (on a weather with melting snow and high winds): a) I wanted to take the more exposed path to the summit, but it looked terrible (the path is closed for four years because of falling rocks) and b) a hold under my feet broke and I hit hard my knee of the other foot. It took me an extra hour to reach the summit taking the alternative route and two extra hours to get back because of the injury (not knowing if it is a bone fracture or just a concussion, I had to sit every 15 minutes for 10 minutes with the knee in the snow and walk differently - pace and stepping - to make sure I'm not making it worse in case something serious have had happened). What I try to convey is that I was ready for a situation like this. I had enough water (even if this made the backpack heavier) that eventually I gave to a girl I met along the way because she was without and a bivy with a sleeping bag for the eventuality of spending the night on the mountain. I also have someone back home knowing what I'm doing and if I don't check in by a set time, they will know they need to send help. Sometimes even if you don't go alone, it might happen that both get into the same bad spot, and you need the person back home to send help after you. Ideally you always have someone knowing where you go and if you don't check in in 12 to 24h they will send help.

Well there is a simple fix - don't rock climb it. Use your rock climbing experience indirectly - better body position, good foot placement (so your hand won't get tired as fast), better endurance/rest estimation, etc.

Hi. I keep hearing that via ferrata falls are to be avoided but am not getting clear info on the internet as to what happens if you fall on a VF? Why does it have to be avoided so much and what does the equipment even do if it can't stop a fall?
@JetSetYourself
@JetSetYourself Год назад
Hello. Probably I shall create a new video about falling and explain this differently. So, falling on a Via Ferrata. To explain falling let's first explain rock climbing and then Via Ferrata. Rock climbing is for people learning the mastery of doing it. It is technical, it requires a lot of training at the gym, it is almost always done in pairs, it was designed with the expectation of the climber falling frequently. On the other hand, Via Ferrata is a tourist attraction designed to entertain and this says it all. Everyone can go on a Via Ferrata. They are designed in such way that falling is possible but not encouraged. In rock climbing falling is expected to happen frequently. In Via Ferrata, never. But what is falling in rock climbing? In general in rock climbing you can fall straight down. This is an easy fall. You might have some friction with the wall when you fall and maybe get some skin off but that's pretty much all that will happen. The rope is elastic, the slack between yourself and the belayer will create even more elasticity. It is good. In rock climbing falling upside down is bad because you can hit the wall with your head and falling under an arch because you have to break into the wall and the risk of breaking bones and joints is high. Overall, falling in rock climbing is something that you train to do because it always happens. It is expected to happen. What about Via Ferrata? What about the purpose of the equipment? Why is so bad? In rock climbing you can fall into the same rope multiple times. In Via Ferrata, based on the severity, only once maybe. And if it happens, you get into another problem, you no longer have protection until the completion of the route. Why is bad falling on a Via Ferrata? Well, first of all, you will not have the experience of doing it. Then, you don't know your situation when it happens. In rock climbing you are always connected to the safety system. The only moment when you are not is at the belay station when you might want to make changes but for you to make hunan errors there it takes a lot of human error (it can happen but not as frequent as in Via Ferrata). In Via Ferrata you can end up totally disconnected from the safety mechanism at any time (through human error). This is a big risk. When falling on a Via Ferrata you still have tbe issue of the upside down possibility but more you have the problem of the rungs and pegs around you. They will be in your way and you will for sure end up hitting them. This will increase the severity of the consequences. The Via Ferrata system is designed to have some elasticity but in general breaking on Via Ferrata will have a bigger negative impact on the body of the climber compared to rock climbing. While the Via Ferrata system will do its job, any fall is followed buy worse injuries compared to rock climbing and the risk grows exponentially after each fall. Based on the severity of the first fall on the route, the next might be with less or way less protection. Usually way less. Combining the lack of training, the complexity of the safety system, the limitations after the first fall and the way a Via Ferrata is designed falling can be just a scare or something very bad. I fell two or three times. Twice for sure. I don't remember the third time. Each time controlled falls (I made it in time to manage the fall, to prepare for it, to minimise its cost on me and the equipment). Each time I fell because I was stubborn and pushed it too much (this is good compared to falling by accident). No injuries in my case. I had two people falling to the limit of getting me scared while they were climbing alongside me. Each fell badly but the equipment did its job and they had zero injuries. They also were able to continue using the safety equipment until the end. With one of them the sock absorber didn't deployed at all, in the other case only superficially (which is good). I have a full video explaining the math of falling. I have another saying what I just texted. I will make time to create one more. I hope this helps.

A reason is that the two security locks used on via ferrata will let you fall down until they are blocked by the nearest iron cable node, that means that injures are anyway much more probable then in classic climbing where the rope dhould teoretically hold you instantaneously
@loewenheart
@loewenheart 8 месяцев назад
The security gear used on via ferratas is static instead of dynamic: the steal ropes and anchors do not stretch at all in case of catching a fall, and the harness gear will only stretch very little compared to the dynamic ropes used in rock climbing. That is why the amount of energy that impacts you when your via ferrata fall is catched is deployed on your body almost in the same instand (no streching), and therefore your body has to absorb most of the impact energy by itself. The security gear should be able to safe your life, but you might not get out unharmed and without broken bones. Since the gear cannot be used after full deployment (it cannot catch a second fall) you cannot continue and will need to get rescued from the rock. If your harness is not worn correctly or you have been using just one of the carabiners instead of two, the gear is not able to absorb the energy, will tear apart and you will fall until hitting the ground. So only use via ferratas if you know that you are not going to fall!

Friend and I were climbing Cjajnik feratta at fall, but we got there from Croatia at 10:30 and still had a lot to walk before we got to it, so we actually started climb at around 12 witch was already late. Climb went smooth so after spending some time at the top we started descend, and went on a goat path that lead us to the mountain above Cjajnik not down. From there we had like 3 hours or more on that path to get all the way down and it was already 16:30h, so we decided to go down via feratta back the way we came. It was grueling and very hard. We where descending very fast to get down before sunset cause we weren't equipped with head lights, or warm cloths. In one moment my foot slipped and I fell 3m down to the next railing. Luckily I managed to hold on to cable with both hands. It was crazy but we got down at 18:30 kissing the ground :D.
