I honestly hope the ATLA live adaptation does the animated series justice. The episodes had the same estimated budget as each game of thrones episodes so it would be quiet disappointing if it didn't capture the magic. I also worry about the story and characters considerably the creators arent on board due to creative differences

As a teenager I was obsessed with Twilight (like so many girls). But looking back it wasn't the shirtless vampires or were-wolfs that made me rewatch the movie again and again, it was the vibe. Much has already been said about the blueish filter that colours the movie, but I also think the setting, music and styling heavily contributed to why so many people wanted to be part of that world and even now still feel an attachment to it.

Felt that way with Spartacus the TV series, everybody would only reduce it to the nudity and s*x scenes but I wouldn't care about that, I was amazed by the whole vibe: the language used, the accents, the colors, the costumes, the aesthetics (the tiny meanings in some details), the choreography during fights, the rhythms, the intensity felt thanks to the camera work... people would look at me like I was crazy because "it's soft p0rn how can you like it that much?!" but in the end we feel what we feel!

I love that you talk about how you've shifted into this perspective over time, I'm the same way. I used to like "realism" above all else. And nothing could touch an amazing PLOT twist. But the more I've watched the more you kind of realize that a lot of stories are the same thing rehashed. That there are only so many unique things you can do with plot. And that while a twist is cool the first time, it's not what makes me come back to a movie again and again. You know what does hit? A movie's VIBE. The vibrations a movie or show are putting off is why I fall in love with something. And I don't get why more people don't feel this way about movies. Everybody is fine with interacting with MUSIC on that level. Very few people are like "yeah these lyrics don't really tell a logical story." Art is vibes. Movies can be art. Story matters but IMAGE and FEELING are just as powerful. You hit the nail on the head style = substance or to put it differently form can matter just as much (if not more) than content. You reference the Cinema Sins way of thinking, and not to heap too much blame on them, but I really do think that way of looking at movies even if it was mostly in jest, really raised a generation of movie lovers who only know how to engage with the art of film in a certain way. We gotta open our minds. Thanks for helping to perpetrate this based take.

Controversial opinion: Studio Ghibli films are all about vibes: the stories - while unique - are just okay most of the time. I mean, just look at Miyazaki's storyboarding process and you get the feel that he's just drawing whatever he's vibing with at the time. And Takahata consistently would miss deadlines because he wasn't feeling the film was working for him just yet (just look at Princess Kaguya's whole production process). For the record, I love Ghibli films (Spirited Away is what inspired me to go into animation), but the reason they're so popular is because of the anemoia vibes they provide - not because the stories themselves are all that special (apart from a select few).

A good film/director that really encapsulates "don't try to UNDERSTAND it , FEEL it" is anything by Wes Anderson. Everything from the colour coordination and soundtrack, to the set design and the movement of the camera is crafted for you to feel the film, to be engrossed in the world. Understanding the plot and what is happening to the characters often plays second fiddle, the in-universe world building is the main focus.

Neon Genesis Evangelion I think is a great example. The show “makes you feel depression.” But no seriously a lot of people get mad at how convoluted the plot is (which it is), but the director was in a deep state of depression when creating the show and the way that each character encapsulates what it feels like to be struggling with depression is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Fr as soon as anyone says anything is "objective" about music 95% of the time you can write off their opinion right there. That word is basically meaningless in a lot of art mediums but ESPECIALLY music
@jimmyjams962
@jimmyjams962 2 года назад
That makes sense, but I actually disagree. I think there are movie elements that can be objectively good or bad (dialogue, pacing, worldbuilding, thematic consistency, etc.), and the combination of those elements are what makes the movie itself good or bad. But where I agree with you is that you can like anything for the sake of liking it, regardless of whether it's "good or bad". Personally, I truly enjoyed the movie, "Mortal Engines", but there are a lot of objectively bad storytelling elements that made the movie definitively "not good". But I can still enjoy the movie simply for the sake of enjoying it.
@athenajaxon2397
@athenajaxon2397 2 года назад
@@jimmyjams962 that's not true in the slightest. Again someone might say a line of dialogue is bad but objective means that it can be proved, that it's a fact. But saying dialogue is bad is by definition an opinion and therefore subjective
@jimmyjams962
@jimmyjams962 2 года назад
@@athenajaxon2397 Dialogue can be proven to be good or bad, though. There are objective elements there as well (believability, context, delivery, intonation, timing, etc.). Compare the dialogue in Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction" to the dialogue from Tommy Wiseau's "The Room". Which would you say was better? Now ask yourself why. Aaron Sorkin has made a career out of writing fast-paced, rhythmic, and compelling dialogue. "Game of Thrones" has been described as "Lyrical Swordplay" due to its incredibly sharp wordplay. Your "liking" a film's dialogue is subjective, but when you're asserting whether its dialogue is good or bad, the conversation moves into the realm of objectivity using the aforementioned elements as measurements.

This is Dark Souls/Elden Ring for me. Too many people get caught up in learning every little detail of the “lore” that most of it doesn’t actually exist outside of the minds of the community. A few big RU-vidrs come up with theories and everyone attaches to that and believes it to be true but they’re all just filling in gaps. The director himself enjoy gaps in the narrative bc that’s how he grew up reading English, not understanding all of it so filling in blanks. Those games are entirely up to PERSONAL interpretation not a community agreed upon lore. That’s why I stay away and play the games blind and assign my own personal meaning to what I’m doing and experiencing and take in a few small things like some descriptions now and then but don’t agree to any one concrete theory.

I agree Dark Souls has amazing vibes: the nihilistic bleak atmosphere, the sense of isolation. And...that's oddly my problem with Dark Souls: it's TOO dark for a video game for me. Like, an actual story and not just lore, characters I can interact with, emotional stakes, like a Tales Of game.

@@sl4y8r76 they had to make adaptations to the story for Dune to become more "pallatable", to ressemble a more mainline cinematic experience. naturally the focus is shifted on Paul as a main character, which is why the first act is spent on Caladan, compared to the book that basically skips that entire part to the point that you could sum it up to "we were on Caladan two seconds ago, now we're on Arrakis". of course you need to drop a lot of side plots, for instance the Atreides raid on Giedi Prime to burn some spice, but it's worth noting the book doesn't dedicate a chapter to that either. for better or worse, Herbert didn't always focus on specific events and left a lot of things implied, or to be understood through context in chapters where the narration is about something else entirely. as for the character development, it's also worth noting Paul and Duncan basically don't interact with each other at all before "the event". in fact Paul only talks to Duncan once, leaving again their friendship implied. I don't think it works well in the book (I kinda like caring about characters yknow), so it certainly wouldn't work in film form. here you already have a lot to ponder about the Bene Gesserit, Jessica, Stilgar and the Fremen, or even the Sardaukar if you wanna go there. I think they could have done stuff better, I suspect a scene of Gurney singing was cut somewhere (because Paul saying "Give us a song instead" makes no sense in the movie, they never establish Gurney as a musician), Thufir is just sort of... there and doesn't do much, but the movie simply had its own priorities, and managed to establish all necessary cornerstones to make sequels, while also moving the plot along. **The** vision of Paul is of immense importance for the first two books, and it's dealt with with the adequate care in the film. to round it back to Duncan, the movie now has a solid foundation to make adaptations of the following books aswell, if they feel like it. I think most people have a good, general idea of what will come in the second part, and can already imagine how it will end. this wouldn't be the case if this was an introduction to Dune.

I didn’t really understand the “vibes” thing until a few years ago when I started watching David Lynch’s Eraserhead and Mulholland Drive. I hated both. THEN I watched Twin Peaks and it clicked, and now I love both those movies. I now LOVE weird psychological films/tv almost exclusively for the vibe.

100% The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild!! Of course, it's an amazing game overall, literally won GOTY when it came out. BUT the general storyline is very typical "ahh collect these things and save Princess Zelda!" like almost every other LOZ game. But the environment, music, and ability to explore every inch of the world makes the game truly amazing. I completed the main story a long time ago, along with most of the side/shrine quests, etc (not the Koroks tho), but I'll still come back to the game just to walk around and explore some more. Pretend like I live in that world, and stock up on apples and arrows. I absolutely love the vibes of that game, and cannot wait for the sequel to come out~

@superrswalkthrougn

I will never agree with those who bash the game for its minimal music. Expecting the grander music of the previous games doesn't mesh with the vibe of a broken, abandoned world. Exploring the world, hearing the the simple piano notes... Only to hear hints of a grander theme when you pass by a ruin or mossridden temple, but only the hints, that elevates the experience. What I especially love to do is just ride the horse as much as I can and avoid combat as much as I can. Because after a minute of riding and listening to the whimsical, light horse riding music, a slow, melancholic rendition of either Zelda's theme or the main theme plays (depending on the time of day), and I live for that part of the music. God, I want to gush about the music in breath of the wild so much. Not just the music, but the general sound design. The combat accents and how they incorporate little details whenever you hit the enemy. The way Tarrey Town's music builds more and more layers from different regions of the game as you add more and more people to it from these regions. It is, to me, the perfect soundtrack for a perfect game and I won't change a thing about it.

I think Howl’s Moving Castle is a perfect example of this. The story itself can be kinda vague and confusing in some areas, but the characters, animation, music, environments, and underlying themes of learning to love yourself and learning to love others are so enticing that it has remained a fan favorite among all of Studio Ghibli’s films for most people, myself included.

@@bangtwitterandtwicetagram830 I didn’t really think it was difficult to understand, but I can understand people who feel that way. I definitely don’t think it’s a good enough reason for people to call the movie overrated or bad since all of its other elements are really strong, but I can at least kinda understand why some people might find it kinda hard to enjoy compared to Ghibli’s other movies since the plot of Howl’s moving castle has a lot more going on in it compared to most of Ghibli’s other stories.
