Transcript:
Hi I'm Mark the creator of
BuiltLean.com if you are watching this for the first time
in this video today,
I'm gonna give you a quick Vibram Five Fingers Review
I'm gonna talk about the pros, the cons, a few
other features and the different models
and then I'm gonna finish up with my
recommendations.
I do want to mention I have no
affiliation with Vibram Five Fingers,
I'm just giving you my honest opinion.
I do think you should buy a pair because it's
a really awesome product
so, the first thing to talk about is the pros
and one thing that's really cool about
Vibram Five Fingers is it helps increase
your ankle, your foot, and your total flexibility.
What you'll notice is that when you first put them on,
you might be really really stiff.
And in just a few weeks it's really gonna help with
your flexibility
of your feet, your toes, and ankles.
Second, is the strength of your foot.
Just like any other muscle in your body,
you really do want your feet to be strong.
You know, if you are wearing shoes and sneakers
right now, it's like your foot is in a coffin.
And so, why not make them move naturally
and get them strong and fit like any
other muscle in your body.
The third is that they're very comfortable,
and that's one of the most common questions I get
is, are they comfortable? And I kinda laugh to myself
because they are much more comfortable
than sneakers, and you just have to try them yourself
to understand.
The fourth really huge benefit Vibram
Five Fingers has, is,
it helps improve your balance and so, there're tons
of receptors on your feet and
when you wear Vibrams, those receptors are almost like
right against the ground
so it helps your balance a lot, it also is
a lot much safer in my opinion to do
a lot of different exercises like lunges
and squats because there's 0 heel left.
And it's one big reason why I got one
pair for each member of my family,
for the holidays, and I also recommend, all
my clients at least a pair.
Fifth really big benefit is, it just helps you move
naturally, and improves your posture and spinal alignment
and it's just because it's like an exo-skeleton
for your foot,
it's like you are barefoot, but with a
little bit more protection.
But, while there are a bunch of pros
there are certainly cons.
One big con, is that they can start smelling
really really bad if you don't wash them consistently.
A second negative thing is that your feet can
get sweaty, and the five fingers
and for some people that can be a little
bit weird. A third problem with Vibram's,
is that some people can have some problem
putting them on,
I think that's something that gets easier
as you do it,
but it's a challenge a lot of people face.
A fourth, is that they can take
time to get used to,
because you've been in sneakers your whole life,
when you actually start working out,
and you're basically bare-feet, it can be a little
bit challenging to get a feel for it,
to get your feet stronger, and get them more flexible.
It's a process, it doesn't happen overnight.
It can take at least
a few weeks if not a couple months.
A fifth problem, with the Vibrams,
is that your feet can get very sore,
specially when you are first trying them out,
and so, like after a run, if you are a runner,
I mean they can get pretty sore
you got to be really careful by the way.
If you are planning to run on Vibrams
take it really slow it's gonna take
at least a few weeks if not a couple months
to really build up the strength in your feet
because your foot has essentially been in a coffin
for like, your whole life,
so we really gotta take time to strengthen it
like any other muscle.
And you should give yourself at least a few weeks
to get a feel for it.
Now, in terms of features, there are a ton of different
models of Vibrams,
but the main differences are, number is that
thickness and hardness of the padding on the bottom of
the sole. Some of them are thicker than others,
another one is the overall flexibility
and weight, I love the Vibram Five Fingers,
the third feature is laces vs no laces.
Laces allow for a little bit more comfort,
and they also allow, they accommodate a wider foot.
In terms of my recommendations if you are just
starting out you should get either the
KM-DLS or the Bikila LS....

I have run with Bikila Five Fingers for maybe 4-5 years now. It was painful in the beginning, due to the fact that I had to completely change my posture and cadence, and since I had to re-strengthen my achillies tendon, which made me use a lot of muscles in ways that I was not used to. This resulted in soleus and anterior tibialis problems for about a year, which kept me of the roads for many months. But after I got used to these shoes, and I had strengthen everything that was weak, it improved my running in every fucking possible way. Now days I almost fly when I run. And that is due to the fact that minimalistic shoes, such as Five Fingers running shoes, will FORCE you to adapt to a more natural running posture. These shoes will make you run the way you are MEANT to run.

One big benefit is that they big time strengthen your feet, ankles, calves and shins, which takes a lot of pressure off of your knees and hips. The pads of your feet become strengthened also. Some of the complaints are from people that have weak feet, ankles and stabilizing muscles when you run with a minimal sole running shoe as opposed to running with cushioned soles and your upper leg muscles doing most of the work.

The only time i wear shoes is if i go out say to town or visiting people ect. The rest of the time i walk barefoot, always have and barely have issues. Even the shoes i wear are thinner soles. Some of the shit people buy nowadays are beyond stupid how they're made to fit.

Hey Mark, I've been wearing Vibrams for a several years now and they actually cured my Plantar Fasciitis. I kid you not. And as you have mentioned folks are very curious about my Vibrams when they see me in them.

Using 5 Finger, the "Classic" for 2 years now. I use them about 7-8 months a year. I don't use it in extreme cold, I'm not hardcore. A few things I would like to mention: 1, It will not change the size of the shoe you are wearing. Your feet will "spread", what will be a weird, but pleasant experience but you will be able to wear your good old footwear. 2, MIND YOUR KNEES. If you using it daily, walking around all day like me, walking on tarmac/concrete/stone will be hard on your knees. I only guess that running in one can be even more demanding on your knees. The cushioning effect of modern shoes are simply marvellous. 3, Wash it regularly. Hand warm water with some detergent/soap will do the trick. Don't overcomplicate it. Just do it. 4, Connect to the ground again! :-) Once again, you will be aware of where you put your feet. Every bump, pebble stone, texture or temperature difference on the ground will be noticed. Walking won't be the same blank experience again. Your feet will "see" what's going on. And you will "watch your step", I can guarantee. 5, This is not some sort of miracle footwear. It will not make your foot stronger, or your posture better. It simply gives you a closer-to-bare-feet-walking experience. If you into that, you will be happy. If not, save the money and spend it on something else. I'm personally loving and enjoying it. Question? Ask!

I'm interested in getting a pair of these mainly because I would like to start running but regular shoes kill my feet. I spend most of my time without shoes, I prefer to go barefoot and I have since I was a child. I mostly only wear shoes if I am going somewhere.

I basically started using my vibram five fingers this summer, by september I was already used to them, at first I had my doubts, but now I love them, I cant run or work out in regular shoes anymore... you just feel like if you were wearing tires!!!, and it's super easy to get a perfect size, you just get a ruler and get your size!!

I think i should comment just to help out those who are new to these, for running. its not covered in the video, but these do require a forefoot running style. Ive seen people say these shoes are horrible, and then watch them run heal to toe. that is a nono, it will result in injury real quick. Ive bin wearing these since they came out almost 6 years ago, so i know there is a transition from normal running shoes to these. there is plenty of youtube videos now to demonstrate how to go about it, please watch them before doing, and have a good run.

Yeah the first thing I noticed was that I kept getting bruised heal. So it definitely took me some time. (About two or three weeks) I had to learn how to place my steps a lot better. It's true, it takes time to get used to. At least it did for me. Now I can wear them all day long, with no probs!LOVE THESE SHOES!

I absolutely love my Vibrams and wish that's all I wore, but work and a few other applications won't allow, so other than that, the review is right on. It took me some time to get used to, but for the sweating, I bought some five finger socks that actually made it a ton more comfortable and handled the sweating......these shoes were easy enough also to just throw in the wash with some jeans and they cleaned just fine. I also bought a natural foot spray deodorizer that I sprayed directly onto the shoe and on my feet to help with any odor, but the socks ended that. Thanks.

If you're having a problem with the shoes smelling bad, invest in the Injinji socks. It should be no surprise that your shoes stink if you're not wearing socks. The same thing happens to regular sneakers. I wear socks with my Vibrams all the time, and I only have to wash them every couple of weeks at most.

I found one other pro. I used to suffer from sciatica so bad that I used to go in twice a year for steroids for the pain. Since I started wearing Vibrams (5 years ago), I have had no sciatica attacks whatsoever. I was also told when I was in my early teens that I would have to wear orthopedic shoes for the rest of my life due to arch problems and a narrow foot (this was over 40 years ago). I have been diagnosed with plantar fasciiatis and bone spurs were found in x-ray in my right heel in 2003. They offered to perform surgery to remove the spurs, but no one is cutting into my foot doing a procedure that only had about a 20% success rate (I spoke to some friends who had the procedure done or who knew someone who had it done. Not a wide sampling to be sure, but it certainly raised questions of the feasibility of having it done on me.) Shooting cortisone into my arch is another questionable procedure as it can break down the tendon that usually causes plantar fasciitis in the first place. Neither of these are permanent fixes in most cases anyways. I originally bought these shoes due to a blister on my right heel that got so bad I couldn't wear any of my shoes. I had seen someone in a business suit at McDonalds and asked him about his funny footwear. He swore by them, and so I took the plunge. These are now the ONLY shoes I wear. I have literally forgotten that I have them on sometimes and only realized it when I got ready for bed. I do a fair amount of walking every day, so it is kinda important that what I am wearing on my feet is comfortable. The only drawback I have found is the constant question "Are those comfortable?"

I love my Vibrams. I have the green and white ones in this video. I enjoy wearing them all the time and working out and running in them is fun. One con you didn't mention: They don't offer any protection from moisture on the ground. In fact the wick moisture like a sponge. So public restrooms... gotta be real careful or avoid completely.

You said you should use a lot of time to build up strength in your feet before you start to really USE them. I'm a sprinter so I often run in spikes, about twice a week. Do you think this will make the time getting used to them faster, because of the spikes not having any dampening and stuff like that?
@BuiltLeanTV
@BuiltLeanTV 9 лет назад
Mr1mathi1 Yes, I walked around with them for a week before I started started running in them. Just use progression and slowly build up, but I do think you will be able to get ramped up faster.
@__-pl3jg
@__-pl3jg 6 лет назад
BAMBI - Yes. And for anyone planning on running I recommend a pair with slightly thicker fore foot sole. The original KSO's are too thin for me. I'll get bruising on my fore foot. But with a pair that have 3mm or thicker outsole I'm fine. Yet the thicker ones are still plenty flexible and superior to a regular shoe any day of the week.

Good review but a few comments. 1) Injinji makes GREAT toe socks for the shoe. This helps immensely with the smell. It also helps with the sweating. So those cons can be put to rest. Also, putting the shoes on does indeed get easier over time. And taking weeks to get used to, well .. thats correct. Another thing, the Bikila is not a multipurpose shoe. It's strictly used for running. A Treksport, or KSO would be more all around than the Bikila.

+joshua dodson i have the same thing and i probably know the solution. i hope so. :) how many do you pay me? :P posture, same what is the FIRST THING TO CHECK if you have any pain, symptoms what most doctors don't say, check your nervous system (posture). i trained foot muscle and i don't have flat feed anymore after some month, i also walk barfood at home a lot. great so far but i still have a terrible posture and at the beginning my left toe hurt and after a while it is fine because my body start to handle the situation WHAT HE CAN because i trained the muscle and an awareness of correct my posture by myself. but there is no short cut, check john bergman, one of best chiropractor in western country that i know, nutrtion is and doctor. (Y) makes a ton of videos and explain easy, funny and simple how our body works. if pelvis is tilt or so tilt that you have a leg length difference, or skoliosis/lordosis, no surprise that it goes till to your toes and change the posture and so you have an unnatural posture and that can hurt except you focus like every minute by walking on your posture like an exercise. if i just walk, i have much pain in knee, left of course and lower back, and sonn neck and head ache. even my heart huts a couple of time a month but just for 2 seconds, i change my posture when i lie or sit (I really don't sit much) and everything is fine. kinda very funny. to release heart pain so quick and easy. fucking doctors recommend a surgery on my 2 discs, L3-5, no metal in side now, they just cut a little bit of so that sharp pain stopped in my calves. mainstream medicine has no idea about how to stay healthy. your problem will always catch up if you don't go to the source and fix it. 3 months later my back pain came back after that surgery. that was very frustrated, now i can laugh about it. chang eyour mindset and then you can change your lifestyle to get out of a system that causes many many people symptoms, agony and even death (wars). rockefellers (pharma, pharmas mainstream medicine) were never supposed to be hear to make people healthy. history is sometimes 1000 times more exciting to read than any movie to watch.

I know this review is from 2013 but I'd like to add....After a few months my toes spread out which allowed me to wear toe socks. Now that I wear socks the shoes don't smell and can be worn for years without washing. Im able to find "like new" used shoes on Ebay for $20-30. This allows me to buy 3 or 4 pairs at a time to try different styles. Pro tip: Although Vibram says you can wash these, the more you do the faster the out sole adhesive weakens. Washing will reduce the lifespan. Eventually the out sole will begin to peel off at the toes and sides. This is the eventual fate of every pair but with socks and no washing im able to get about 2 years of almost everyday wear out of each pair.

Where I live sometimes there are small pieces of glass on the streets, are they safe?
@__-pl3jg
@__-pl3jg 6 лет назад
Camila - Deffinitely. Even the thinnest 3mm ones (original KSO model) are fine on glass and gravel. But if you are running or jogging I recommend the thicker outsole models with 4mm or thicker rubber. I bought the "Trek Ascent LR" (4mm rubber outsole) for a hike in Colorado and was better off than all my friends who wore hiking boots. We hiked up to 14'000ft over lots of jagged rocks walking about 50 miles in 3 days carrying a 40lb pack. I was the only one without chaffing sores on my feet. The beauty of having flexible footwear is that when your feet eventually do get tired and beat up you simply stretch them back and forth and then your feet are ready for more. If your feet get sore I recommend rubbing peppermint oil on them and drinking a protein shake...the muscles will heal super fast and you'll be ready for action the next day :-)

these shoes are amazing. better than walking barefoot. better than wearing shoes. i owned a pair and the biggest thing is even though it costs more you got to buy the injinji socks to go with them. wearing shoes without socks will always make your shoe smelly because our foot is a detoxifying point just like arm pits. i'm going to buy some again in the future but this time i'm going to protect them with the socks

Do you think maybe wearing toe socks would help or do you think they might make it more uncomfortable for say someone like myself that has never tried the shoe? Or anyone, ha ha? I have wore toe socks under traditional type trainer before and found it sometimes to be bit annoying. I'm not really sure why, my guess was because of the show not the sick because my foot feels fine with just the sock but I wondered if maybe with a toe sock and the vibrant if it might be uncomfortable with the mass between the toes. I'm actually very interested in trying these out, because I have very long toes with a high arch and small width and I find it hard to support all aspects of my foot with a basic trainer. I find it especially painful as much of my walking depends on the flexibility of my foot. I walk the soft sands of the beach and high inclines. Do you think this shoe would help? Thanks for your help. I like your review.

EyeLive2Cook - Given the structure of your foot, it's hard to say. You can give them a try to see how they feel and/or see a podiatrist or consult with your doctor. For a more extensive review, check out my BuiltLean.com website and search for Vibram Review.

I think it's a great idea, especially for jump rope workouts, just give yourself some time to get used to them.

I owned a pair of these shoes and i would never buy again. before i purchased these i had owned the same finger shoes but in a different brand so i could get use to them and see if i liked them before i spent all the money on vibram and i did. so i purchased the vibrams and just after a week they started cutting into my feet. now i have scars because of these shoes.

I have flat and feet, and I'm 14. I prefer running in these rather then a shoe with an arch. I'm a barefoot person, I always run on the street which is covered with tar and rocks, so wearing these just keeps them cool, and the tar off my feet. I would say, yes to your question.

what do you think about using vibram for trail running? Is there a particular one you'd go for?
@BuiltLeanTV
@BuiltLeanTV 7 лет назад
I personally prefer to wear a minimal trail running shoe. Reason being, I've done some trail running in vibrams and have pretty badly stubbed my toes and bruised my feet on rocks before. They don't offer much protection. I would recommend checking out Merrell Trail Gloves, or the Brooks Puregrit. -Kristin, BuiltLean Managing Editor

I have the kso and kso evo. Love both of them. To reduce the smelly mess I recommend injinji yo socks. I will not go back to regular traditional sneakers. Of vibram can come out with a winterized 5 finger shoe I will get them. I know they have the vtrail accent but from reviews they are good to a certain degree like down to in the 20s. Plus wont really keep out the wetness?.

Would it be okay to start off walking 12 miles a week with them on. i walk 3 times a week to my gym, 2 miles there and 2 miles back home. Does anyone recommend i take a bit more time to get use to them? or would it be fine to go on and start at that consistency?
@BuiltLeanTV
@BuiltLeanTV 7 лет назад
I think that sounds like a really reasonable amount of mileage starting out. I would pay attention to how you feel though, because you might find that 3 miles is a lot at first. Try 1 mile, then 2 and then 3, gradually building your mileage and letting your feet adjust to a minimal shoe. Let us know how it goes! -Kristin, BuiltLean Managing Editor

The vtrainer i recieved are defective. The ties and velcro do not remain secure indoors sitting and walking. Also the structure those ties and laces are attached to the shoe are to painful to wear indoors for a single day. The toes and feet can not enjoy the terrific soles due to the defective design structure for the meaningless ties and velcro that come free and flap indoors sitting and walking a few feet . Another issue the phone contact and email contact and web site do not respond. The defective pair i have cost way to much for landfill ready garbage.

@BuiltLeanTV
@BuiltLeanTV 9 лет назад
drundee Moreno Check out there website for size information. You have to measure your foot with a ruler or measuring tape in inches, then apply that measurement to find the proper size.
@nuturalzero
@nuturalzero 9 лет назад
BuiltLean just to help, you may want to just go to a store that sells these, because the instructions are correct but if you make a mistake in the measurement then they can be painful, i have 6 pairs myself and for 2 of them i was off on the measurements. one size smaller will hurt the arch, one size bigger and your toes may pop out a bit during a run.
