This is the first in a series of videos that go over the engine build that is going into the VGG Duster build. It was a fun project and we pioneered a few different things that we aren't sure if they should have been done but they were anyway. This video goes over the block machining. Check out the engine install over ‪@ViceGripGarage‬ !

When I work on a haas machine with modern interlocks i like to put the M8 on its own line in the program then put a block delete / in front of it so that the window stays clean when you are taking your first cut then you can turn the cooant on manually from the control panel and continue with the rest of the program as normal

Why are you using a one insert fly face cutter instead of a 6 or 8 inch face mill with 12 to 14 insert
@paragonengines1924
@paragonengines1924 10 месяцев назад
Mainly because there don't really have anything that is available in an 11" diam for a reasonable price. Also, every time I wanted to switch between cutting aluminum and cast iron, I would have to change all of those inserts or have 2 cutters.

You have all the fun toys. I'm going to rebuild a 78 318 this winter but it's just going to be the bare minimum. I'm just crossing my fingers the heads are flat and the block deck is good. The motor currently has good compression but a blown head gadget.

I tried the LS rocker setup on magnum heads and while they would bolt on with SAE comparable bolts, the short tip height of the valves even with the smaller beehive retainers didnt afford enoufh clearance. That and the geometry wasn't good at all. Definitely needed a longer tip height valve for that setup to work, so unless you have a machine shop and the parts lying around its not really worth it.
@paragonengines1924
@paragonengines1924 10 месяцев назад
Yes it does require some different parts, but if you are already rebuilding the motor, they aren't a big change.
@henrymeynier5072
@henrymeynier5072 10 месяцев назад
Longer valves is something magnums need anyway tho right?
@Mr34blazer
@Mr34blazer 10 месяцев назад
@@henrymeynier5072 the problem I had was availability of a valve with an overall length and tip height that would package a 1.7" or greater valve spring installed height, which was going to be costly when considering offset retainers, and/locks to fit a different set of valves. Then there was the issue of geometry; as you lengthen the OAL of the valve the termination point of the fulcrum is raised, and the length of the rocker becomes too long, bringing the contact point on the stem much further out. The 59* lifter angle doesn't help either, but isn't as critical. After initial measurements I decided it was a better option to retain the OE length valves and cut the seat down .050" as there was plenty of material between the seat and water jacket/runners. Good enough for a street cam and supporting valvetrain.

Interesting idea… I’m not necessarily a fan of the downgrade to oiling the top end through the pushrods instead of metered pulses through the rocker shaft (even though Mopar themselves did it on the Magnum version of the 318), but since the Mopar Performance stamped steel shaft rockers are now unobtainium this is a really interesting way to use a common, strong, and reliable stamped rocker design. Just have to make sure the main and rods still get priority oiling instead of pumping it all up to the valve covers.
@paragonengines1924
@paragonengines1924 10 месяцев назад
It did have plenty of oil pressure so it wasn't considered an issue!
@stevelacker358
@stevelacker358 10 месяцев назад
@@paragonengines1924 I’m sure it’s not too much of an issue, especially with oils as good as they are now. I’m still biased by memories of tearing down pushrod-oiled Chevies and Fords in the 70s and finding 12 of 16 pushrods plugged solid with hard packed oil sludge compared to high mileage 318s and 383s that still oiled all the rockers evenly through the shaft system.
