The Vice President of India is the second-highest constitutional office in the country, next to the President. Elected indirectly by an electoral college consisting of members of both houses of Parliament, the Vice President's primary role is to serve as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha (Council of States). In the absence of the President, the Vice President acts as the President. The Vice President plays a crucial role in the functioning of Parliament, presiding over its sessions and ensuring orderly conduct of business. They also perform ceremonial duties and represent India on various occasions both domestically and internationally.
