If they have capacity, you can't take over someone's finances just because you deem their spending as foolish. Otherwise, we could go around taking control of the bank accounts of gamblers and smokers. Soon, we would end up in a dystopia. Maybe you could argue she does not have capacity in this case because she cannot understand she is being scammed. But she probably does have capacity unfortunately, and is just foolish. Maybe the rules could be changed to get some kind of protection for scam victims.

These same scammers target people with dementia to scam them in other types of ways such as fake IRS tax scams where they convince them they owe money or by convincing them their grandchildren are in prison and need bail money. So many mentally ill elderly people have been financially ruined by these scam companies located in Nigeria and India. They are heartless.

You need both. A good support network is vital for recovery, but the recovery process will need a professional therapist to guide and support you too.

I've seen at least one of these where the scammer used a still photo and made a weird looking video with the person talking and their arm flapping, and their head always returning eerily to the same basic position. I guess the key is for people to know what to look for in the behavior of the person (asking for money, being held for ransom, etc) rather than how realistic the photos/videos are.
