Great Gregorian music in the beautiful cathedral of the Notre Dame, magnificent organ music and choir. Blessings, especially for our French friends! From a Dutch Roman Catholic Christian.
Even for those of us with no experience of Latin in church, the sound of Latin hymns and Gregorian chant sounds so... heavenly. I guess edifying sounds will always transcend language and culture.
clay10h Even the humblest traditional Latin Mass, which is the birthright of every western Catholic, has the same majesty and reverence as all the great organs of Catholic France.
I would LOVE to be inside Notre Dame during the singing of this sequence!!! The thunderous blast of the organ, the glorious acoustics, the angelic choir, the rising smoke of incense, and the earth quaking under my feet! Are we standing on Mount Zion?
I heartily agree with you. I have visited Notre Dame de Paris many, many times, and have played both the organs during Masses, and have given a recital on the Grand Orgue. Nevertheless it is good that this version of Victimae Paschali Laudes has been sung in at least three churches in this country. I was immensely pleased, and honoured, to receive at telephone call from M. le Chanoine, Monseigneur Jehan REVERT on Easter Day, he who conducted this performance..
This is truly magnificent. Notre-Dame de Paris is the perfect setting for this timeless and ancient sung prayer with Pierre Cochereau at the great and grand Aristide Cavaille-Coll organ. Incomparable. Thank you for uploading this.
Totally Devastated....the day after Palm Sunday and the start of Holy Week/Easter Week 2019... HOW could this TRAGEDY happen. I so wanted to visit. My deceased mother spent Christmas Eve here in 1970 and never stopped talking about it. So much here, the famous windows and the incomparable historic Great Organ....home to the creators of the iconic Late Romantic French organ music from Cesar Franck,Louis Vierne, Charles Widor, Charles Tournemiere, Marcel Dupre, Olivier Messaien, Pierre Cocherau etc . I am in California, not Paris. I am not Catholic by upbringing but the Sacredness and Spirituality embedded in this experience is universal.....I have been a member of the West Coast version of Notre Darme, Grace Cathedral in San Francisco.
God bless, Bill, from a Catholic friend (a convert from when I was 19 - now I'm 82, praise God). I used to live in Long Beach, in the south. A marvelous Paschal season of hope to you.
Easter Sequence. Superb chorus, the largest organ in France, and the exquisite acoustics of the second greatest Cathedral dedicated to Our Lady (after the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome).
The Official text of 1970 is in Latin. Unfortunately, many bishops have ignored the Vatican II recommendation that even where the language of the people is used, the people Should Know how to Respond their Part in Latin ! Bishops ! Why not ?? !
Well, the Traditional Altar of Notre Dame was still standing, even after the fire, while the new one was destroyed when the roof fell... This could be a sign...
In Memoriam, Frances Clarke Brown Doggett on her 9th anniversary of passing 12/11/2009(2018) My mother, Frances attended Christmas Midnight Mass at Notre Dame, Christmas Eve 1970 and never stopped talking about it. She had a great love of great Cathedral organs and organ music. Her experience was magnified into the early 2000s at Grace Cathedral,San Francisco on Christmas Eve, a sacred place in North America with parallels to Notre Dame
I heard Pierre Cochereau here in Hagerstown MD when he gave a concert years ago. He arrived moments before the concert and had never seen the organ. Nevertheless, he gave a great performance.
@clay10h: in Germany we call this music with guitars, drums, PA etc. "Happy Clappy" which still has to endure and survive throughout the following centuries as the traditional sacred music already has done...
This setting of the Easter Sequence was composed specifically for Notre Damme Cathedral in Paris. It is the only place in the world where you can hear this setting and I can assure you that their music is not in chant notation but in modern day notation with specific rhythms, harmonies, and dynamics....unlike the gregorian version commonly sung throughout the world.
Victimae paschali laudes immolent Christiani. Agnus redemit oves: Christus innocens Patri reconciliavit peccatores. Mors et vita duello conflixere mirando: dux vitae mortuus regnat vivus. Dic nobis, Maria, quid vidisti in via? Sepulcrum Christi viventis: et gloriam vidi resurgentis. Angelicos testes, sudarium et vestes. Surrexit Christus spes mea: praecedet suos in Galilaeam. Scimus Christum surrexisse a mortuis vere: tu nobis, victor Rex, miserere. Amen. Alleluja.

This is a slightly different version of the Gregorian hymn, but it is appropriate here for Notre Dame, which shall arise again after the diabolic attack it suffered. Quote from an expert: old oak does not burn easily !
Furthermore it has been sing regularly in Norwich Cathedral, where the Choirmaster was formerly a pupil of mine, and took away a copy of my transcription! After all these years I have just found out.
I'm sad to have read that the Organ was lost in the fire. :( Thankfully your video and many other recordings of it will ensure that it's music will endure forever.
It seems quite intact. The choir-organ got wet (deliberatley, to protect it and the wooden choir-stalls form burning). Hopefully the smoke/dust damage is not too bad. (But that's easily fixed.
To the Paschal Victim, the Christians offer praises. The Lamb redeemed the sheep: The innocent Christ reconciled sinners with the Father. Death and Life fought in singular fight. The owner of Life, who had died, now reigns alive. Tell us, Mary, what did you saw along the way?
(continuation) I saw the Sepulchre of the living Christ and the glory of the Resurrected one, the angelic witnesses, the winding cloth and his clothes. Christ my hope has risen again, he preceeds his followers into Galilee. We know that Christ has risen truly from the dead. You victorious King, have mercy on us. Amen. Alleluia.
I've found (and I've heard) this version just before easter 2011... And I'm living in "full enchantment" since then. I'm the leader of a little chatolic choir in Hungary, and I wonder if I got the score of this wonderful piece (even for fee / money /etc...) !! Is it possible ?? :) Many thanks in advance !!! (if my english is bad : sorry...)

TO THOSE WHO DO NOT CARE FOR THE RHYTHMIC PERFORMANCE STYLE: See: Notes inégales at Wikipedia Singing the chant in this style with such a huge number of vocal resources and in such a live reverberant space is practical, especially if assembly is singing with choir. It is much easier to keep everyone together vocally than singing straight chant. It also allows for more uniform breathing. This "pulsing" inegale style is easy for most people to feel.
@lightflavour12: in the Easter Sunday of 2010, Lefebvre plays this Prose "more powerful". I upload this version in youtube (Victimae paschali laudes & alleluia). Sorry for my poor english.
