@Nikos Antikythera - To say its time to retire, that's being hyperbolic. His insights are always valued whether hes proven correct or not. You have a good point though and I tend to agree. Pretty sure this war happened because the western sphere of influence continued to push their will and threaten to make Ukraine a part of NATO when Russia clearly stated that it would not allow that.

I've been wondering what Victor Davis Hanson's take on the Ukraine mess would be and came across this interview and was very impressed with his analysis, which goes far beyond the Russia/Ukraine disaster. It's so much more comprehensive than anything I've seen from anyone else it's very educational on many levels and more topics than I have seen anywhere else. Incredibly impressive. I wish it were more well known.
I have too much respect for Dr. Hanson and the former deputy PM to refer to either by their first names but I agree they offer an awesome conversation.
VDH is wrong to characterize Russia as "despised". Some gullible people may have adopted the ignorant attitudes served up to them by the media, but in general Russia is perceived as a nation with gravitas, a deep and profound history and a tenacity which makes the effete nations of the rest of the Western world pale by comparison.
There has been a fairly long history of hating and demonizing Russia. Fortunately, there have been attempts to humanize Russia and to distinguish between the Russian people and its government.
I have this question - in Putin's speech justifying his bellicose stance towards NATO and the West before the invasion, he lists a number of NATO involvements in regime changes from Libya through to Iraq, etc. as well as the Maiden Revolution (regime change?) and Western Partners' unwillingness to insist on Ukraine implementing the Minsk agreements, what could the West have done differently to avoid this situation where Ukraine and its people become the expendable pawns in which a fight between fatcats (sic) in Brussels on the one side and Moscow on the other is settled?
Could Germany and France put pressure on Ukraine to start implementing the Minsk agreemen? I feel like Zelensky just was going to keep ignoring the Minsk agreement because he thought the EU has his back
They could have reassured Russia that they would not allow Ukraine into NATO (who had 9 countries in 1998 and 23 at the present...all pointing their missiles at Russia). Instead the US paid for a facilitated a coup d'état against a democratically elected, friendly to Russia government.

@@JohnAndersonMedia Not sure why everybody claims that his war is a total surprise. Putin said that he would start a ware if: Ukraine joined NATO (was invited in June 2021) and if negotiations stopped (in late 2021 Ukraine withdraw from negotiations). However, this time of the year is the worst (mud in all forms). Russia will probably take the eastern part of Ukraine. EU will have a food scare as much of the food comes from Russia or Ukraine. People in Africa can not afford food and start to starve... yeas its a perfect storm. Please take notes: NATO will only defend members that can defend themselves. A bit disappointed that VDH picked up the Russia/Ukraine conversation at the same point where the traditional media starts, in 2022. The narrative is far different when you go back to 2014, when the Ukrainian govt began a heavy handed approach (ie, killing civilian protesters in the east) to quell dissent.
Very true. And Biden admin seems to enjoy poking the Bear and stoking the Dragon without thought or strategy to what that could mean to engage in a WW3.

Putin has never acted on impulse...never...he has often said in public that geopolitical matters have a mathematical logic to them....this military campaign wasn't dreamed up 2 months ago rather it has been on Russia's strategic drawing board for quite a few years. Putin and the Russian elite thinkers around him are strong and well versed geopolitical chess players and thus have taken bold action (which is incorrectly viewed as opportunistic and somewhat emotionally driven by many so called experts) based on all the pieces, positions and potential maneuvers of his US/NATO opponents. Notice how Russia has barely responded in word or deed to all the monumental sanctions etc? ...Barely a word, that should give everyone pause... The Russian's knew the potential consequences but they did it anyway; why? ...Desperation? No! Pressure? No! Were tricked? No!.... I suspect that it is the US deep state and warmonger neocons of Congress that have fallen into their own trap and the consequences will be their undoing.

What an extraordinary session with Victor Davis Hanson. So much wisdom and insight, informed by history which we continue to ignore - we don't teach it, we don't refer to it, and consequently we don't learn from it... so we repeat it. I just wish, as an Australian that John Anderson would run again for Federal Parliament. This country desperately needs people of calibre who can bring civil, intelligent, wise and experienced dialogue to debate on policy, on the future of democracy and the direction Australia needs to go in. Ukraine has woken the conscience of the world but I wonder, as Niall Ferguson said in another interview with John Anderson, will the West's 'attention deficit disorder' kick in and in three months from now we've moved on from Ukraine and the lessons there, will Germany ramp up its spending on NATO. The West has weakened itself and Conservatism has become a dirty word. Not a good outlook. But thank you John Anderson for flying the flag. These interviews as so valuable.
Victor Hanson has a remarkable ability to compress time and make connections between our current times to the challenges the acients experienced in their democracies. I don't agree w/ his pro-Trump stance, but I'm hardpressed to disagree with his other views about the West's decline, decadence, smugness, etc. We need more voices like his and conversations like this one to continue to advocate sanity.
I think Trump is everything that the Left elitists hate. He's not all that well educated and he's ineloquent in his speech. He's too much like the average laborer such as the truckers in Canada who Trudeau and the rest look down their noses at. These leftists are like the aristocrats of old that thought that anyone who works with their hands is member of the unwashed masses.
Long a VDH fan since I first read his book on Athens and Sparta but I am truly impressed by Mr Anderson. An intelligent, articulate, deeply thoughtful person and wait - he's a politician! Not fair Australians got this as Deputy PM and we get as VP - Kamala.

And they provoked Russia on September 10, of this past year. That was the straw that broke the camels back. I have admired Mr. Hanson for years now. I highly recommend his most recent book. It is not an easy read. Be prepared to study it carefully, take it in strides, and do not gloss over terms or situations which do not easily appear in your range of view. His message is critical to our survival as a nation as well as the world around us. I know of no other knowledgeable man with such a breadth of information at his disposal who yet chooses to present all that he delineates with such calm clarity and objectivity. He has an awareness of so many points of view that it's uncanny. Most of the time we encounter a man with a fount of knowledge who is all too eager to tell you which direction to take and that his conclusion is the best or most accurate one to adopt. Mr. Hanson is different. He is a true teacher. He is not a savior. He provides readers and thinkers with multiple senses of awareness and merely hopes that people make choices wisely.
So knowledgeable! He looks down through history and sees comparisons to current events. Really thinks issues through, unlike this administration. I also admired his respect for and honoring of his ancestors.

When this thing started, I was heavily leaning towards supporting Zelensky just because of my lifelong distrust for Russians, but after a few days, I noticed that everyone who lies to me every single day, Soros, Biden, Media, UN, US government, Obama, and all the rest, were all desperately trying to convince me that the only reasonable choice was to back Zelensky. I know for a fact that all those people don't want what's best for me, and most are actively trying to destroy my country and everyone in it. I can't recall any instance in which Putin has lied to me, he's never lectured me about how I should live or what I should think, and I've never seen him take any action to try to destroy my country. So how reasonable is it to blindly obey all the people who I know are lying to me, and condemn the one guy in this who hasn't?
You need to understand that it was under Obama that Crimea was lost to Russia. Putin want stop at Ukraine. He wants to reform the old USSR. Ukraine has large supplies of gas an precious metals. More than that is the vast plain of the most fertile soil in the world. The 2nd largest country in Europe behind Russia. With Ukraine Russia would control 30% of the world's Wheat an grain. They could weaponize food. Also Kyiv is home to Antonov Design Bureau. Capability to build Commercial Aircraft. Built the largest Airplane in the world. The Russians bombed it. But Ukrainians have the expertise that Russians don't possess. We don't need to let it fall. Fortunately Trump gave Ukraine Javelin shoulder mount weaponry to repel the invasion until NATO an USA could send more weapons. They have woke up to the importance.

Hi from Russia. I see you happy to explain Putin moves in your own terms. Now a view from our side of battlefield. 1. My country quite obsessed with sovereignity. For reasons too complicated to eхplain here. Russia is only chunk of planet never ever colonized by West. West who take everything on its way. Up to every tiny island in Pacific. We refuse to bow to global hegemon in peak of his might, btw - thats why we here. 2. We also know - West always expand to the East. Pure geography. Once West stops internal squabbles and united - he start pushing eastward, eventually stumbling into Russia. Nothing new, really. Thats why neutral territory between us is so important. No buffer - no trust. 3. Ukraine and Russia (or better say Kiev and Moscow) share same legacy. We are brothers, yeah. And we are rivals because of this. Moscow - a lesser brother - unite Russian lands into unitary state. Kiev have same rights, and he is older and more "noble". Being unable to fight Moscow face to face - Kiev historically appeal to external powers for help. Countless times bring invaders in our common home. Poles, Swedes, Turks, Germans, now Americans. Again, nothing new here. Moscow evaluate such behaviour as dangerous separatism. Also Moscow thinks Kiev spoiled by West. Contaminated in some sense. And must be isolated and cured. --- This is basics.

To quote Biden, "C'mon, man." NATO never presented an offensive threat to the Soviet Union or Russian Federation. It simply doesn't have the military power to do so. It is the USSR, and now the Russian Federation, that has, for over 40 years, named its annual military exercises "Zapad." As I'm sure you know, that means "West." What is to the west of Russia?
On Germany's response - I've seen very few people comment on the inherent irony of it - that for the first time in well over a century, Germany announced that it's rebuilding and expanding it's military, and the whole of Europe didn't react with a sense of dread and a collective moan of "Oh God, not again" - but instead with what seems to be approval and a collective sigh of relief.
Hanson's knowledge and wisdom are always impressive. He has this special capacity for discovering hints in the popular culture - empirical evidence - that support his intuitive analysis. The bit about the stereotypical russian villain in Hollywood movies, and the way by which the chinese were able to profit from the woke agenda, are great examples. His noticing also of the subtle shift in posture by China is something that the vast majority of pundits have not taken notice of.
