Did you know that Julie and Lesley Ann had a musical role in common? Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella. Julie played the lead in 1957 (it was written with her in mind) and Lesley in 1965 (her first lead role). And I agree you should react to The Music Man. Robert was fantastic as Prof. Harold Hill.

A bit of a forgotten gem by Blake Edwards is "S.O.B", which is a hilarious satire of Hollywood in the 70's to early 80's. Based on Edwards' own career, it has a star cast, including Julie Andrews doing something that our titular hostess might very much approve of. It's a bit darker in tone than Victor/Victoria, which might be why it didn't hit the box office all that high, but it's still IMO one of Blake Edwards' best movies, right next to his first 3 Pink Panther movies.

I love this film. Blake Edwards was a genius directing comedies. Everyone remembers 'Victor/Victoria' and the Pink Panther movies but they forget some of his other films. Two of my favorite are 'Operation Petticoat', set in WWII, with Cary Grant and Toy Curtis trying to get a pink submarine out of Japanese controlled waters, and 'The Great Race', with Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and Natalie Wood, in a land race from New York to Paris in the early 20th century. Blake Edwards had a perfect hand at the continuous scene play. He did it in the Pink Panther; he did it here as well. He was also the perfect producer for the musical style 60's and 70's movies. This was his last entry of this type in the early 80's. Both my sister and I love this movie to this very day. We used to watch it back in the VCR days at least once a month. I saw the Broadway musical of this movie in '95 because it was literally the last time Julie Andrews was doing a show. I think it was a year or two before she had surgery on her nodes that damaged her voice? Anyhow, the show and the movie are fun (the movie moreso).

Trivia bits! The waiter from the cockroach scene and later is also Clousseau’s police sgt (?) in the Pink Panther movies. James Garner’s bodyguard is Alex Karras, who was Mongo in Blazing Saddles!

Julie Andrews really was "gifted", which she showed in the movie "SOB", another Blake Edwards film. Blake was also Julie's husband. Alex Karas being one of the biggest and toughest football players of all time turned actor, his contemporary ball players found it hilarious and good-heartily gave him a lot of teasing. Always look forward to when y'all do comedy just for Emily's laugh.

Alex Karras was also in the movie Porkys with his real life wife Susan Clark, who plays Cherry Forever. Then as a personal challenge, watch the first episode of Webster TV show

I think you two would get a kick out of Mrs. Henderson, starring Bob Hoskins and Dame Judy Dench. It is kind of The Producers meets Victor Victoria.

best thing i ever saw Robert Preston did was a an old, old, 1970s PBS special-- "The Man Who Corrupted Hadelyberg," an adaptation of an old Mark Twain story. Fred Gwinn co-starred with him and it was just a fantastic performance all around. It ends a little abruptly, i'd say because of budget (hell, Henry Fonda introduced it), but a good performance. in some other universe, Robert Preston was given his own anthology series where he played a trickster god, standing over the smouldering wreckage of his handiwork as he narrates tales of hubris and pride.

Wow, that sounds interesting. Imdb says it was made in 1980, and is only a short film, running just 37 minutes. I think this was part of a series of Mark Twain adaptations made for PBS around that time.

Blake Edwards was Julie Andrews husband at the time. You have to see MUSIC MAN! Robert Preston and Shirley Jones are a great musical team.

I saw this film with my mum in 1982. My best friend wanted to see it so I went with him a week later. Afterwards he came out to me. I laughed because I knew. Told me before his parents which didn’t go down well with them 😂
