In this 3rd and final part of the series I will be repacking the spring barrels, greasing the springs, cleaning the chassis and reassembling the motor. I will only be showing the packing and greasing of one barrel as the procedure and parts for the second are the same though assembly will be shown in full. I hope that this helps you decide whether to tackle this project yourself. This took pretty much a full Saturday so plan accordingly. Though, in fairness, had I not had to worry about a camera the whole time, it probably would have been faster.
This procedure should work for all double barrel, 4-spring motors made by the Victor Talking Machine Company including the entire VV-400 series, the Orthophonic Credenza, the VV-XVI, and VV-111, as well, I'm sure, as many others.
As with all my videos I suggest you play this at x1.5 speed as I tend to speak slowly while I'm working and thinking out loud.

Boy, this could not have come at a better time. I just had a spring break in my motor about two weeks ago and was looking for some insight on how to replace them properly. Seems to me like you’ve filled a void in RU-vid’s expertise, because I couldn’t find anything comprehensive about doing this for four spring motors before this. Thank you for posting.

That's exactly why I did it, I couldn't find anything either. Glad to be of help! Just FYI, on the left hand barrel I reversed the direction, typically the lip goes to the outside but in my final assembly I have it going to the inside. Doesn't affect the performance or the fit by any means and is easily switched back. These barrels (at least on mine) are the exact same size and it seems that, not only can they be flipped around (as long as you put the drive gears in correctly), they can also be swapped. I don't believe that is the case for all machines.

Are both barrels wound the same direction?

Great video, very thorough and educational! I regreased a 4-spring motor in my Credenza, using a set of wood blocks that fit the contours of the barrel, and putting all in a bench vise, enabling the use of both hands for spring removal and installation. I wore welder's gloves and safety glasses. All parts were cleaned in a kerosene bath. I coated both sides of the springs with grease before installation; now the motor works perfectly, no rumbles. I see why the victrola repair shops charge so much for a complete motor rebuild!

Those springs are massive. I thought clock springs were big! Looks like the bottom spring was getting away from you when you were taking it out of the barrel in part 2, but you safely got it out. Theres some scary power in big springs like those. I'll leave this job for others!. That motor is very quiet. Doesn't seem the fact that the crank end motors slight jerkiness affects the music playback either. Job well done. :)

It certainly is although they're on the opposite side of the state. It's why I started figuring out how to do this myself.
