Gregg Popovich is effectively doing a reverse Tom Thibodeau strategy with Victor wembanyama, making sure that he doesn't get injured on a team that is going nowhere in this current state.
I love the self awareness you show, often when people bring examples it’s clouded with emotion and biased. Very good job at staying neutral while also building a solid case around praising and also critiquing Wemby.
Another aspect of Wemby's game is that he jumps just high enough for the circumstance. It's the guys who soar out of the building who often get hurt. As a string bean, Wemby' would be at a much higher risk of injury. So he does his yoga to stay super flexible and uses his incredible skill set to carry the day.
Dude the 1.5 steals is fucking crazy too like that's rlly valuable for a big barely any are doing that. And the assists too like over 4 for a big is super impressive. Well rounded talent with goat potential
Maybe his best development would be to add strength but not a lot of weight that could slow down his reaction time skills. A wiry, super flexible, player who is deceptively strong. Wemby is already pretty good at bouncing back from the sharp elbows and forearms he has taken from bruisers like Jokic, Demontas, etc. and still blocked their shots. Those players have been tricked into thinking they can take their shot near the rim only to find out that "The Human Rubber Band" isn't done with them yet.
Embiid was doing historic numbers on limited minutes. Let's see how he does after he gets full time long enough for his body to adjust. Could be crazy or it could dip down.
Here is another way to determine where Wemby ranks this year as a top player. If Wemby were placed on ANY of the 12 teams that have made the top six in the playoffs, that team would immediately become the heavy favorite to win it all! He could be slotted in at center, forward or even as a shooting guard. Maybe even as a high-minutes 6th man. Picture this: when the teams give their starters a 5-6 minute rest each half, and the court is populated with the subs, Wemby would go to town against the opposing second team scoring 20 points a night and blocking five or six shots!!! IOW, the team would go on a scoring binge twice a night during scrub play while the other squad watches in awe. As a matter of fact, this could extend Wemby's career after he gets finished dominating. A half dozen more years as a 6th man and scrub time massacres. There is no other player in the league who would make as big of an impact by being transferred to another playoff team. My partial list of candidates would be Shai, Donovan, Jokic for sure, Luka, Butler (he's a playoff monster.) Who are yours?
You left out sabonis as a top player on the kings. I def get your argument for top 30, i dont think he gets below top 25. Keep the boy healthy, and get him 2 strong role players though and the spurs are going to be in the running for the chip in the next 3-5 years
Trust me, the Spurs tanked the season from the beginning with Sochan starting at the point guard, this was a deliberate decision by Pop in order to start off terribly, so, even if we had great chemistry, we would still have a bottom three record by the end of the season. In this draft, we had a chance of getting Charlotte and Toronto’s first round picks, but Charlotte’s is lottery protected and Toronto’s is top 6 protected. The Spurs may get Toronto’s pick, but Charlotte was always out of the question. So knowing that they could have just their own pick, they decided to just tank and let it be a growth year. There are not any superstar talents in this draft, but you could get your third or fourth best player on a championship team if you do it right. The years that the Spurs have Atlanta unprotected picks are going to be interesting, if they can land a top 5 pick next year, it’s gonna be a pretty rapid rise to the top.
The minutes restriction will make sense, cause he hasn’t filled out his frame yet. And if you’ve noticed, he looks like he could put on 50 lbs of muscle and it wouldn’t affect his mobility at all. Once he is at a weight/strength level where he can really explode off a pivot or drop step, that’s when you’ll see big minutes.
I been telling people this before the season even started. Pop knows it's not a good idea to push him to far his rookie year risking injuries knowing no matter how good he is the team was not going anywhere. Better to keep him healthy let him grow and see who else fits while keeping yourself in contention for a high draft to pair him with someone that he can grow. Also they have a bunch of picks. They could possibly trade for a young peice.
I am looking forward to seeing France competing at the Olympics. With a healthy lineup and the right mindset they should be an absolute menace for any team. Plus they're coming back after an AWFUL World Cup last year.
I gauge a players value on one thing. Who is un-tradable for anything you could possibly offer. I don’t think there’s a team in the league that wouldn’t want a Wemby, Jokic, Giannis or Luka on their roster yet at the same time there’s literally nothing you could offer these teams to acquire these players including trading them for each other. Even if you had 10 first round picks you’re not getting them. By some act of God even if you could be offered the 1st, 2nd and 3rd pick in the same draft you’re not getting Jokic, Wemby, Giannis or Luka(unless they are disgruntled and want to leave the team anyway). All these guys with Gil know this and also ought to see beyond just expecting a rookie led team to be a winning team. They constantly speak on how tough it is the 1st year and they weren’t even leading the teams. Y’all struggled with Vets on the team but expect Wemby with none of that whatsoever and in the toughest conference with a purely inexperienced team. It’s stupidity.
Shit I think he’s top 20, there’s a ton of people that can give you buckets but there ain’t anyone giving you defense like he does. He’s a good playmaker a great rebounder and is gonna be unguardable eventually.
There are some names in that list that you named that you shouldn't add of you arent adding Sabonis. Dude's giving 20/14/8 on excellent splits and literally nobody thinks of him. Saying Zion and BI, Bane or Sengun but not him is crazy
The whole “spurs didn’t build around wemby” discourse is tiring how were they supposed to know they were gonna draft him ?? That’s what this season is for to see who to keep also were the youngest team in the league
If victor get Giannas build while still being agile, I agree with pierce because there will be nothing anybody can do. You will need to double him and he still can put a shot up smh. I feel like Chet should be a power forward instead like KD. KD was 6’11 playing small forward most of his career now he got older but thankfully the nba is less physical, he slid to power forward. The spurs should be the one to try and get Zach lavine because he can shoot all he wants while still have an open lane to drive because wemby can shoot
Bro could become the next Wilt Chamberlain...empty stats without affecting his teams win total. I want to see him impact, and be able to carry a team to win until then I'll be a little disappointed.
I agree, people are using their imagination to project something he hasn't done. With these flashy stats San Antonio should've won at least 30-35 games. They actually lost more games than last year which is a big red flag. Every great rookie has added wins to their team except Wemby.
Victor is 11th in PER and 17th in BPM. 2nd in DRTG. 3rd in DBPM. 22nd in VORP. Offensively he is "bad" and his ws/48 is not even in top 100. De'Aaron fox is not better. Lillard is not better. Like at worst he is top 20. Once he gets his offensive game to be better, he will be top 5 for a long time (if not top 1-3). Also Sengun is really good.
There are so many players you’ve mentioned being better than Wemby that he is already much, much better than. The Spurs are tanking. If they made 2 trades earlier in the season and played Wemby 40 minutes a night they would be the 7th seed. The only category Wemby is not already elite in is ball security, which he more than makes up for with blocks and steals. It’s not often that someone truly deserves the outlandish praise they’ve prematurely received, but this is one of those times.
I love what San Antonio is doing. Wemby is a Luka talent, but he’s not in a Luka situation. Or at least, they’re not setting him out to be. Give this generational talent a chance to get a half decent supporting cast rather than fall victim to the LeBron effect.
Legend of winning I can make an arguement for wemby being a top 15 player lol. He’s 20 10 guy who’s clearly the best defensive player in the league and has a good playmaking skillset. He’s bam adebayo with a jump shot and even BETTER defensively. That’s a top 15 player lol
@@Kosher93 yes he has. He covers more ground, his teams defensive stats with and without him are a difference of 20 FUCKING POINTS, mind you. He doesn’t just block shots because he’s tall, he’s recovery is one of the greatest of all time and he positions himself at an elite level.
@@Championshiporbusthis recovery is so great because two steps gets him from one sideline to other. Wemby is obviously skilled, but let’s not act like he would be this all time great shot blocker if he was 6’9-6’10
Over Zion is kinda crazy LOW ngl💀 and especially if you rate Scottie Barnes over him. Unless I’ve been missing sum and tripping bc ik Barnes has had a great season but damn😭
But IS zion better than wemby tho? I think the gap in their defense is MUCH bigger than the gap in their offense and wemby is a super impactful offensive player
Really liked how you came up with your top 25 logic. I think top 25 is very fair. I'd like a video comparing Wemby to Lebron's/Shaqs/Duncans rookie year. If you use that as a jumping off point to see what he can become I'd say he is top 5 in terms of potential atm. Obviously MJ had the best rookie year ever. This summer will be very interesting to see what the Spurs do and how they set up the next coming years.
You make no sense. How is he going to win MVP if you just said that hes not making a big impact because of his minutes? And yes, wins have always determined who eins the MVP. How can a olayer be most valuable if his team has the same record with or without him? Makes no sense.
