I still se people commenting stuff like, "he should play guitar" but people don't realise, we don't play bass until we're 'good enough' to play guitar and we don't play bass because we don't want to be in the spotlight. It was a life changing event even though this was the first online one he did because of COVID. Being online it was possible to get bass legends to check in remotely. Try...Chuck Rainey, Rustee Allen, Reggie Hamilton, Stanley Clark and the amazing drummer Dennis Chambers. Plus incredible instructors. And of course Victor. A lot was music (and life) philosophy and advice from the legends, not just theory and mechanics. If you ever take up the bass - GO. I hope to get to the actual camp when we get back to ‘normal’.

The real Lesson that he’s trying to make us learn is that you don’t LEARN the lesson of music... you feel it, and you play it. Nobody will ever be able to learn this song and recreate it the way he does because this is HIS expression and that’s precisely how music is supposed to be: an expression of yourself and how YOU make people feel. Every performance is unique to the player. That’s the wisdom of Victor Wooten right there.

He’s not “blocking out” music theory. Vic is incredibly educated and can transcribe all of his own parts, as well as arrange them. He could tell you the chord, mode, scale, etc of any segment of this song. This song is incredibly complex and is that way intentionally. This is what theory looks like when it’s second nature to the musician: effortless.

Here's a list (ongoing): • All throughout the song, you'll be able to hear parts where he "misses" notes (tries to hit and doesn't come through or something like that). Most people call it a mistake, we call it jazz. • Around 1:15 , he starts to improvise, but from what it sounds like to me, he hits a note he doesn't want to, but still improvises with said "wrong" note into a beautiful walk. Moral of the story: When you can improvise, there are no "wrong" notes lol. I like to say, "My favorite scale is the chromatic scale."

Would you guys stop saying silly things about how he would be good at classical guitar! He's a bass player and bass is a different music instrument. And for those who thinks bass is easier than guitar you're just ignorant about music! As a bass player I can say that we play bass because we love the object, the style, the sound and everything that comes with it... that's one of the reasons i've chosen bass instead of guitar... Still, he's amazing, so please respect this instrument and those who decided to fall in love with!
@aaron.biketrials
@aaron.biketrials 10 лет назад
Bass=easy to learn. Hard to master. Guitar=harder to learn easier to master. I disagree with you slightly. He would still be dam impressive on a classic guitar as a lot of his technics have come from guitar players, but also other drummers and other musicians also. But yes I agree completely on everything else. I can play both but favour bass. Each to they're own :)
@StrikerFin
@StrikerFin 9 лет назад
Aaron Tottman Easy to learn because most bass player are ex guitarist that loves thhe feeling of earthquake moving through them.
@carltonburns778
@carltonburns778 9 лет назад
Aaron Tottman The bass PARTS that are written for most music are easier to learn than the guitar parts. But the bass itself is more physically demanding because of the string width and spacing. Because guitars are physically easir to play, and because the register of the tones are more audible when notes are being played quickly, guitar became more of a virtuoso instrument in mainstream music
@ChadGlassify
@ChadGlassify 7 лет назад
Bass isn't easier to learn. It's easier, maybe, to make a sound from than a guitar but to really learn it is just as hard as learning any instrument. A guitarist could not just suddenly pick up a bass and play like this video.

I'd like to see Marco Minnemann and Gavin Harrison work on drums together and exchange a percussive solo section in a song, and Tosin, Guthrie, and Victor can take the next part and keep switching parts, and then Rudess's solo in the end, and all the guitarists start playing the same line as him in the end and fade out. More detailed than I intended...
