All the things that made Victoria 2 great are missing from Victoria 3 the warfare is terrible, there is no capitalism no economy simulation no westernization no spheres of influence just the barest bones of a game still in Alpha waiting for a few hundred dollars worth of DLC

This battle system is worse than Stellaris' ground combat. At least in Stellaris you can do orbital bombardments, have regular troops fight giant super-soldiers or biophages, or hunter-killers. Or you know, just crack the planet into pieces. Jesus and I thought Stellaris ground combat was barebones.
@JohnDoe-vm5rb

Stellaris at least had the excuse that the ground combat was not the focus and could happen mostly offscreen. Teleporting armies in a Victorian game is... Breathtaking. For the wrong reasons.
@woodwyrm

At least in Stellaris we still have control of where our fleets are going, and with mods like Alphamod, NSC2, Planetary Diversity etc you can even fine-tune how your fleets behave *in* battle(though honestly, that's mostly NSC2). VickyIII will need a *drastic* total overhaul mod to fix its problems.
@jeanhunter3538

Everything about this game was predicted by Martin Anward being in charge. The guy who insisted, despite years of pushback from players, that automated exploration would be bad for Stellaris. Since this is supposedly the economic game, he thinks you have to micromanage the economy.

Yep! That hack ruined Stellaris with Megacorp and took the “grand strategy” out of it entirely. In V3, it’s ironic that the war system is the only grand strategy element of the game, where you’re an armchair general. The rest is playing whack-a-mole with deficits and input resources, on a level of a mobile puzzle game. There’s no real supply at all, resources are auto-generated out of thin air, factories only influence the price but not actual supply. So resources are essentially just modifiers haha, in a “grand strategy complex economic simulator” hahah. How lazy, how outrageously disappointing this hack is.

@@user-rg9he8vq3u Paradox has a few recent notable examples of wasted dev time, so it doesn’t surprise me. Look into the background of the CK3 ‘Royal court’ dlc, where they spent I think like 9 months without new content only to release a dlc which was basically just an item thing for minor stat boosts and some new events. Most of their time went into making a 3D system from scratch for the court/items, and the end product looks ‘ok’ at best. But because of all the work it took them they slapped a $30 price on it, just because of all the wasted time and resources on having a 3D aspect to it which they had no system for beforehand.

He has nostalgia goggles on. He also shat on CK3 when it was way better than CK2, for one unlike CK2 it launched feature complete and (for now) did nor devolve into a high fantasy setting with demons, aztecs with machine guns and vikings hunting eldritch gods. Victoria 2 is also a game with glaring design flaws such as that there is units that are outright better in every circumstance or actions that are objectively better. For example in Vic2 attacking China as literally any nation including Croatia or Butua is the obvious meta choice. If in the new world you basically have to go full liberal... you basically do everywhere or emigration will fuck you over can't close your borders even to stop pops leaving. (immigration is also always a net positive and chinese/nigerian imigrants to sweden magically turn into swedes over time...) Then there's how communism vs capitalism work in Vic 2 capitalism is when the AI runs the economy badly for you, communism is when you can actually run the economy yourself and make it work. So capitalism is a noob trap and communism is unfun micromanaging

Don't need AI to control economic development, player can centrally control a capitalist society. Combat is a sort of quantum system, it takes into account an estimated arrival date and abstracts all attrition in a blackbox calculation then spawns virtual battles in a state along a frontline. It feels weird because the time to travel is actually kind of weird and only takes into account time to travel from some arbitrarily set initial position so you can have a battle on one side of the line then immediately have a battle on the other because time to travel is from the initial position not where the troops where in the last battle. The effect is a sort of odd cloud of virtual battles that feels like troops are popping in and out of existence all over a line which can be pretty long.

@@Mathmachine ok for example lets talk about the comparison between the two games on the economic side of things. vic 2 separated pops based on various things same as vic 3 however the difference is in how many of those differences actually have an impact on the pop expenditure back into market, vic 2's system only did it based on classes even though there were various other separations of class and peoples present in the game. for example most progressive decisions only played out a flat buff instead of you actually being able to see it in the pop income section of vic 3 where it actually tells you how much the rest of and what percentage the rest of the family members are earning and exactly what they are buying in market, thus also having a knock on effect to supply and demand within your national market. 2nd, there is now national market in vic 2 whereas prices are first determined at a national level before the export and import cost is evaluated while simultaneously taking into account global market value and value to other nations as in vic 3. see vic 2 acts as though every nation holds the same value onto a product and its seen on the global market bar

I've heard him talk at a press conference in just such a deflated tone about how the way they used to do things just doesn't exist anymore, and how the old style of game is not feasible with corporate pressures. I don't know enough of the other old guys to bring up names, but Paradox: Your huge returns on EU4 and CK2 being massive games compared to any of your releases that came before were meant to be invested in producing more of the same. You're supposed to realise that you had a successful product all along that just needed some marketing and resources, not to use that money to completely restructure your company away from those humble beginnings and passion projects. What they did with Stellaris was start to change things up: It got a shaky reception. With HOI4 they alienated may fans of HOI3 but eventually fixed it and made something with some depth - if you want to spend a couple hundred dollars on top to get what they should've released initially. CK3 and Imperator were both clearly lacking and poorly thought out as concepts. If you don't have a game, don't make one. Instead, Paradox chose to ruin their brands. Warfare is broken af and not just because of the mechanics involved. It is way too costly. Take the opium wars. In the real world, less than 10k people died total. around 1000 europeans and around 7000 chinese. Furthermore China fielded 200k soldiers. Yet in the game, China loses over a million in causalities. You lose over 30k soldiers yourself. War is 30x as costly as it was in the real world. Combine that with how they gimped natural pop growth (germany for example grew by 11% from 1871-1911) to something like 1% or less and you are forced to encourage migration. And of course this leads you down the path of multiculturalism in order to increase migratory attraction. You are railroaded to play a certain way, or you gimp yourself hard. Unlike the claim that all ways of playing the game would be viable when they announced the game, all paths are not viable, only one path is. Anything else is gimping yourself hard.

They decided they liked playing anno so they converted the economy to anno, wherein it's more about chains of production rather than dynamic economies. This was in response to Victoria 2's completely impossible to manage late game where factories would shut down but not build up fast enough which caused death spirals. An overreaction on the dev teams part, to a real problem in vicky 2. They decided it's racist and Eurocentric to have a westernization system, therein no country can put at a disadvantage to the west. An overreaction on the dev teams part, to a none issue in vicky 2. They decided to overhaul the war system to make it HOI light without the micro so they could move micro to the economy. This was in response to the impossibly insane troop management of late Victoria where you spend more time preening your armies than anything else. An overaction on the dev teams part, to a real issue in Vicky 2. While I'm having some fun playing it as an factorio or anno style numbers game, that's not Victoria. Its a victim of the modern school of video game thought, "Abstraction, Abstraction, Abstraction" wherein everything needs to be abstracted out. It's also the victim of post-colonial historical revisionism wherein anything remotely Eurocentric or European advantageous can't be present for Social Justice. Ultimately I feel they tried to address real issues in Victoria 2 (Factories shutting down and disappearing forever, Late game unit management being very micro intensive down to unit comp, a lot of rail historical roading, No CB wars in europe) while failing to maintain what worked and introducing trendy mechanics. Better than launch imperator but definitely not Victoria, there's some good in the bones of the game to make it into a Victoria game but it ultimately needs a complete overhaul to make it a true sequel.

You mean it's another Hearts of Iron IV, Stellaris, Crusader Kings II, Europa Universalis IV, and every other game Paradox has released since at least the mid 2000s. Even Victoria 2 had what I and many others would consider essential DLC that added content and mechanics that you could not imagine playing the game without. In fact, if you go back and play _any_ of the titles I just mentioned on their release version with no DLC enabled, you will quickly realize that the phrase "wide as an ocean and deep as a puddle" applies to *every single one of them.* Paradox games are and always have been long term investments by both the developers and the players. If you are _just now_ taking offense with their model, all I can say is this: where have you been the last *16* years?

@kovi567
@kovi567 Год назад
@@malaficus There are others making grand strategy, especially in the indie sphere. It's not lack of competition, it's being high on power. Paradox has been riding the high horse when it came to grand strategy about ten, twelve years ago, but since then plenty of competition spurced up, and they being greedy assholes made their disillusioned fans seek them out. The fact that they are still not bankrupt is due to A) the longevity of digital media, as in even if they fuck up Victoria 3, people can still buy Victoria 2, which was good, and critics of the newer iterations always bring this up. B)Just being big themselves. They have been eating up other studios and making other IPs besides their main ones, which are at least marginally profitable. Combine this with the fact that their games, let's face it, are not that complicated to make (indie studios have reiterated their formula successfully), and you get a studio that can live in the red for decades. Sadly, in economy nothing is as simple as "lack of competition".

Well a bit of history corection is at place here. USA was not (and still is not) the ultra capitalist haven that its described as. This was especially true around 1830 to the civil war. USA become much more capitalistic after the civil war, but the other side of that coin is that a lot of power was moved from the states to the federal government.

No america became much more mercantilist. Check Lincoln and the wigs. ‘We need a empire like the British’ In contrast Adam smith’s wealth of nations was a criticism of mercantilism. Lincoln wiped out journalists, manipulated the market and so on and declared war if people refused to pay taxes in his speech as president. America after that basically became a nationalist/mercantilist system. Then we have Wilson and FDR who made it a progressive system and kinda just burnt itself until it did Keynes was economy stuff after and a whole nation building with League of Nations that became NATO which still exists to this day pretty much. There were 3 republics. Federalist- from first to Lincoln, Adam smith’s capitalism. Lincoln and mercantilism to Hoover. Wilson really paved the great society and Hoover did the ‘no business can fail or people lose a job’ I say Hoover because ‘see the depression was so bad my policies couldn’t stop it’ when it was used. FDR and Keynes- read Keynes open letter to FDR or the last paragraph at least. It pretty much still exists we just call it modems momentary theory because Keynes really messed up a lot of things.

This game was planned since 2015, so it's not like they lacked dev time. You want innovative, passionate projects? Look at indie companies. For example, Grey Eminence and Fields of History: Great War are looking promising.

As soon as investors hold over 49% shares of something it usually turns to mud. Obviously investors want to get money out of their new acquisition, so they push for the decisions that makes the most profit, according to their analysts. Which often means leaving your niche, which is quite honestly idiotic, estranging older customers while having to pull in new customers. Even if this strategy is successfull in terms of making rich people richer, quality and principles are the first things to vanish.

So they took away all ability to automatically run areas of the country, reworked literacy to make it mostly worthless, and didn't want to focus on war, yet made anyone who disagrees with you a radical, who could rebel against your country... Yeah Paradox couldn't decide where to focus so they threw out everything, for DLC if I had to guess, to milk the Victoria name. I also love how they removed the basic ability to move your army, and expect that to not be exploited. Really sad I was looking forward to this game, but it seems like if you got the beta, you got the game. I wonder if this is because of the consoles, mobile, or because they just didn't care. Maybe all of the above.

i mean literacy is useful if you're a nation that is "behind" (slightly less tech than the Uk at game start) however it takes hella long to up and you need to get techs for it to increase since it's mostly an institution and not a building like idk a school or university. it can allow you to catch up through technology spread but by the time you have the literacy to do that you'll likely have caught up anyways and unless it's a singleplayer game it wont matter because the AI is too shite to advance themselves

10 minutes in and I have to point a few things out: -You're lying if you say the AI worked well in Victoria 2. -Different military methods demand different amounts and types of weapons, meaning that a high conscript army with no supplies will be beaten by a smaller, well supplied professional army with the same tech. -Westernization has been delegated to two fronts: Literacy and Wealth, & Government. Certain laws require certain people in power, which is not possible right off the bat, limiting modes of production and technological acquirement significantly.
