This is Victoria Avenue in Whanganui New Zealand. At the bottom end of the Ave is the Whanganui River and the towns CBD and at this end is a railway crossing and an intersection with SH3 that heads up through the suburb of St Johns Hill and out of town to New Plymouth.
It was the river and its sheltered valley that created the reason for a town here. But it was after the arrival of this branch railway in 1878, that the transhipment of goods increased over the river wharves and commerce grew and the town's economy was strengthened to create the city we know today.
This train here is heading to Palmerston North, and most of the containers have come from the Castlecliff Industrial Line. The last two or three wagons are allocated to Toll Transport and were uplifted from the Whanganui Freight Yards.
Soon at East Town, the locomotives will attach empty fertilizer hoppers from the Ravensdown Depot at Aramoho and also uplift loaded log wagons from the Aramoho Yard as well.
