Victoria Mansion, A National Historic Landmark in Portland, Maine, USA
victoriamansio...
Victoria Mansion is a much-loved Portland landmark, but its significance extends far beyond Maine. Distinguished for its architecture and its extraordinary original interiors, it is among the most important historic homes of the nineteenth century anywhere in the nation. As an organization, our mission is to conserve, maintain, and restore this one-of-a-kind property and share its history with the public.

@@elisecooper1942 The mirror they have covered for room renovations is a diamond dust backed mirror, a process where silver was melted and used to cover the backside of a piece of glass. ... In this process the mercury evaporated leaving the silver. So gorgeous! Here is a pic! encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ2aG1v21D62ZScG3Wk3TIlXdqBgjmae0xYJQ&usqp=CAU

Thank you for a nice tour and wonderful stories of this home and it’s occupants. I am so HAPPY, that this glorious home was not demolished for a gas station to be built. This happen way to often here in America, they demolish to many BEAUTIFUL homes with such craftsmanship and history.. it makes me sick that so many do not care about preserving these spectacular homes. ❤️

To think an architectural masterpiece such as this was almost demolished. Salute to all the people conserving this gem. Thank you Mr Thomas Johnson and Dr Meuser for transporting me back to an era gone by and learned so much from this one video than many other videos I've watched regarding Victorian homes. Keep educating us 👍

thank you for the great tour, always wanted to see the house. Grandfather took me by in the 60's before it was open to the public. My family has been in Maine since early 1700 if not before, i think before. We are all from the Winthrop area. grandpa had a potato farm and worked on the railroad, he retired in about 1965 or so. Long time residents of Maine.

This was an amazing tour. Great encapsulation of the home's unique qualities/architecture along with the history of the estate. Ninety per cent is an admirable amount when considering the original furnishings as part of the collection. That is very rare nowadays when it comes to preserving historical residences. Thanks so very much! Cheers, Darryl

Loved this video tour, Dr. Meuser. You are so very knowledgeable regarding the architecture & furnishings of the time. Also sympathetic to Olive's position in her marriage. I do wonder where the children slept as you said the home only has 2 bedrooms. Or did I misunderstand?

The jittery camera work and the poor lighting make this a difficult viewing . More of the history of the family and the city in which they lived at the beginning of the video would have added interest to the narrative. That said, I would imagine its a great place to visit

This was such an EXCELLENT experience! While my daughter was attending UNE Dental School I took a tour of this incredible house with my granddaughter’s school class. It was a wonderful tour for the children, but I wanted to know SO much more and to spend time perusing detail. Alas, that did not happen. One day, I hope to attend an event there during the holidays, or perhaps just take a tour with more time allotted as experienced here. As mentioned in the tour, the visual environment is so rich it is difficult to notice particulars in just one visit, or even during several years of restoration efforts. Thank you so much for taking the time to create this video, all who were involved. I would like to know where Olive went when she left the house. I don’t think that was mentioned. I share the opinion of the gentleman, he was likely spot on about the reasons she left the house ‘as is’ once her husband died. She did not appear remotely contented in the image shown, nothing like the painting.

while i enjoyed the history of the mansion, i will have to say that the presentation of the furniture and appointments was a disappointment. it would stand to reason tat a good camera and adequate lighting system would be essential to carry through the story and to underscore the finery of items.

@victoriamansion8510

The Libby children had bedrooms on the second floor. The 2 Libby sons shared what was originally the sitting room. Two of the daughters shared what was a guest bedroom, and the other daughter took what had been the housekeeper's bedroom. They had closets and drawers for clothes. Olive and Ruggles likely would have shared the bathroom off of the master bedroom.
