Victoria Peak is the highest peak of Hong Kong Island, which is why it aroused the interest of influential inhabitants of the colony from the very beginning. In the mid-19th century, the governor's summer house was built there, sparking a wave of construction of more residences and even an exclusive hotel.
To ensure relatively trouble-free access for residents to their villas, work began on a track and cable railway at the end of the 19th century - it was finally launched in 1888.
