On the surface the Wonthaggi doesn't seem very interesting, but I was able to make an 18 minute video on it so their is a lot to cover

I travelled on the Wonthaggi line once before it closed. I was lucky enough to have been the fireman on a Leongatha Pass once. Travelled on lots of steam hauled specials before the line beyond Cranbourne closed. If I remember correctly the people of Leongatha and Korumburra voted against the lines passenger service continuing instead being in favour of a bus service account the rail line’s overall speed being much slower. The Cudgewa line would make for an interesting topic I believe. Keep up the hard work. Cheers.

From February to April 1969 I was on temp transfer from Sth Dynon to Korumburra. Whilst at Korumburra I ran goods and passenger trains towards Yarram and Melbourne. I also ran many goods trains to and from Wonthaggi. In November 1969 I temp transferred to Wodonga where I ran heaps of SG trains to and from Melbourne (on average twice a week). I also ran Cudgewa goods plus once rand a hired train to Shelley.

2 Other stations where meant to be added to the "Stations Along the Line" section, but they where cut for time, but if you wanna give what I written down a read then: Woodleigh Woodleigh Railway Station was opened on the 9th of May 1910 as Hunter Railway station. Although it was renamed to Woodleigh on the 1st of July. It was originally surveyed to be much closer to Loch so the line could follow the Bass river which was done so the line could avoid steep gradients, however it was chosen to build the line from Nyora instead. Having a more direct line, but biting the bullet of having a steep gradient and needing to build a bridge at Berrys Rd, which was best avoided as it was Crown allotted to the Parish of Jeetho. 5 years after the line opened the line needed to be regraded. Woodleigh Station was a quaint Weatherboard station, the facilities were standard Platform, Goods shed, and 2 through Sidings and 3 dead ends. On the 18th of May 1914 miniature electric staff was provided at the station in place of the Large electric staff from Nyora to Kernot. In 1939 the station was given a telegraph instrument, which was taken away from them in 1945. In 1960 it was demoted as an electric staff station and replaced with a Nyora to Anderson Electric Staff. And before the station was even closed, the station building was reallocated to the Coal Creek Community park and Museum in Korrumburra , where at first it would be the original entrance to the park before the present day foyer was built. In the 1980s the station was moved to the railway display and now is displayed among other railway artefacts such as K169. The station closed along with the ceasing of Passenger services, although I'm pretty sure 1 of the sidings was kept open as a passing loop, and was fully closed on the 21st of November 1978. Kernot Kernot Railway station opened on the 9th of May 1910, but it opened for coal traffic a few months previously in February, first opening for coal as Almurta railway station. During construction it was referred to as "Almerta". It seems like this station was constantly having its name changed. A few days before the official opening on the 3rd of May the station was renamed to McKenzie, which was the surname of an officer of the mines department, and was a prominent figure with the Powlett Coalfields. On the 1st of May 1911 the station was renamed to the name we know today Kernot by the Commissioner, it was named after the Chief Mechanical engineer to honor the passing of his brother Professor Williams Charles Kernot. After Kernot received its name the other stations also received their permanent names; the original Kernot was actually the modern day Glen Forbes. The station was relatively quaint with a weatherboard building, a goods shed, a small passing loop, and dead end siding. In 1915 the station saw more traffic than any other station along the line between Daylston and Nyora, so it was proposed to build a 15 room hotel opposite the store which never came to fruition. By the 1960s passenger services to the station were losing 900 pounds per year, which is a stark contrast to the 1910s. Some time after the line opened a 10,000 gallon water tank and crane was installed at the station. On the 18th of 1916 the passing loop was put out of use, as well as the disabling of electric staff, replaced with a new section from Woodleigh-Glen Forbes. On the 1st of May 1923 Road 2 and the home signals were dismantled. In 1968 the final parts of the yard were removed, with the removal of the dead-end sidings, and on the 21st of November 1978 on the same day the line closed. Not much remains of the station beside a retaining wall in fairly good condition. The land where the station sits is reserved for future use on the Rail Trail.

I live next to a long bike and walking track that was once the lovely stock rail tracks that fed through Wodonga/Ebden/Tallangatta VIC. Some of the smaller stations are still there, dressed as picnic areas. Highly recommend you visit Albury train station, where you can hire a bike and ride the entire trail from there. Great channel. Keep up the good work!

with the leongatha line also going all the way to yarram it would be possible for a branch to inverloch and wonthaggi from black spur creek near minyan as only 22km and just 11km to a new station at wonthaggi opposite mitre ten

Great Video, a line suggestion: The Small branch off lines in Echuca, Main one being the Echuca Wharf line, so much history in a km of track.

@VictorianTransportHistory This is a great video and well presented. You do the best videos! Although the line was unfortunate to be closed, life goes on. You made a video of the Leongatha line. Could you do a video on the closed line to Yarram? And even possibly the Strzelecki line? Maybe even how the Yarram line went to Woodside - but was closed in the 1950s! Great work! 😊😊
