Today we've come along to a new site for us - and we owe a HUGE thank you to our friend for directing us to this amazing place! We got lost, we got confused but we finally found it and were so glad we did!
A First! An amazing Lacemakers oil lamp - we love finding things that encourage us to dig deeper into our research and learn about new things! Make a point to try to find out something new every day!
The hill is so steep here its hard to imagine that there are so many treasures under the surface of the earth! It only takes a little scrape to begin to discover what has been left behind! Its not long before Nicole finds a lovely green poison bottle... then Craig finds another before finding the biggest one of all - its an amazing piece with glass ridges to warn of its contents, and it even has tablespoon measures marked out in strong embossed glass! So cool!
There are so many really amazing wee pieces here - glass stoppers, ink wells - an incredible old lace makers oil lamp - a Victorian mourning brooch, and, a jigsaw of spongeware pieces!! Check out our new crafting channel - Crafting with Scottish Mudlarking - on Sunday at 7pm GMT to see Nicole use Kintsuki style repair on these! Embracing Wabi-Sabi, Nicole uses air dry clay to fill and emphasize the missing pieces of this stunning 100 Year old ceramic beauty! Visible repair like this is a stunning way of emphasising the life and time that an object, like this wonderful pottery bowl, has existed in - Kintsugi is classic visible repairing! We hope you like it!

I believe your shaker is part of a desk set. At one time desks had a couple of holes in the upper side of the desktop. One hole held a little pot like container for ink so you could dip your quill or pen in it and the other hole held a shaker for the powder used to absorb the excess ink on the paper to help dry it quicker. The rip or lip of the jar kept it from falling through the hole.

That's what I was thinking, too. I believe they were called pounce pots.

I think you are right. It was my first thought too. The Northern Mudlarks have found a few of them the last years. And they always say that they belong to a desk set.
@scottishmudlarking
@scottishmudlarking 2 года назад
Its a good call, and it could easily be a pounce pot... they commonly have a concave top, saucer shaped, though we have seen a few with a convex top like this - the decoration could be paired with writing desk or a kitchen! Its hard to say for sure, but a pounce pot is as likely as anything without consulting a curator of same period pieces. I know a few people who work in nearby museums, so I might drop one of them a note to see what they think. Thank you so much, best wishes, Nicole & Craig xo

Now we’re all wishing we had a Victorian bottle dump in our neighborhood! What amazing treasures, and the way that you film it makes it even more fun! The forest setting with bird songs is so tranquil. So many incredible finds- my favorite has to be the brooch- but those stoppers come in a close second! Take care, and thank you for the lovely, peaceful interlude! See you on Sunday! 🙏❤️

So much fun to be had in a bottle dump! :D It is incredible what we can find, and we are so grateful to the folks who helped us find these - well guarded - places! This one is very tranquil, maybe it was the time of day, but the sun shining through the leaves and that birdsong were just lovely! Oh! That brooch - it is amethyst glass - very deep purple, so much that it looks black... if we shine a very bright led through it, the light is purple - a truly gorgeous thing! And stoppers, well, they are always fantastic finds! :D Thank you so much, hope all is well... Sunday should be a good one - it took us four days to film LOL we hope its worth it! Best wishes, Nicole & Craig xo

The mourning brooch is definitely my favourite find! But I also love the embossed glass ink bottle and the stone (ink?) bottle. That little shaker definitely belongs to a desk set. Thank you so much! It may be a pounce pot, but in truth, its not a typical shape for a pounce pot - they tend to be concave on the top. When looking at items like this, I always go to my training in material culture/museum anthropology - based on that, I'd say we can't know what it is exactly because it is an individual item with no markings or other references to point us in the right direction. The shape alone - the convex top - is more typical of a sugar shaker. But the shape alone still can't tell us which it is/was for sure, so it may be a pounce pot. You will see the same ambiguity in auction house statements and often in museum collections in descriptions that read "pounce pot/sugar shaker". Very many thanks and much love from Scotland :D Nicole & Craig xo

It was such a good day! :D Must get back there soon! Great presentation idea for the jam jars! Great minds - Craig said something similar the other day, so you may see a few earrings like that soon! :D The pounce pot idea - to be 100% honest, we can't know if it is or isn't that, but its not the typical form/shape of a pounce pot - they tend, generally, to have concave tops, so excess pounce can be poured back in. But that alone can't tell us if is is or isn't. When I look at items like this, I always go to my training in material culture/museum anthropology - based on that, as an individual item with no markings or other references to point us in the right direction, we can't say for sure. I don´t know if you are old enough, but in my day, back in the 70´s, we had to use fountain pens, and Quick ink, blue or black, but as an artist there is nothing like Windsor and Newton ink, so many colours, lovely to work with, and it goes in an air brush, cool.

When I, Nicole, was a child, we learned how to write with fountain pens - I loved using different coloured ink cartridges and ink - there was even one that was scented if I recall rightly... Pink and turquoise was a favourite colour with me, although teachers didn't allow red as that was their marking colour... thanks so much for asking, it brought back lovely memories! What I really love finding are ink wells with a little bit of ink still left ( haven't tried to use it yet... but in our next video, that streams tonight Friday I recall finding an ink bottle , half full with ink...) x

Hi Nicole and Craig I think your mystery item is a pounce pot and would have contained powdered chalk or something similar to dry the ink on letters, I've seen a couple that the northern mudlarks have dug up

Too much to type - liked watching Crystal Maze(Craig's humour).... the video was a WOWZER! Your turn has come for the really good stuff, plenty in tow! The William Hill bottle, anybody's favourite for a flutter on the nags ! Waiting for Nicole to scream at the top of the dump if she hits the jackpot. 20.00 - that 6 sided CHIPPED green bottle(that hadn't gone in the bag - murders)! Off you sped AND 24 HOURS LATER............?

Haha!! Love the Crystal Maze - proper old school day with Richard O'Brien! They have a statue of him as Riff-Raff in Hamilton city centre on the site of the old theatre where he, oddly worked as a barber! Wow! That's a bit of a sidetrack! lol Glad you enjoye dth evid - its was a great haul for us, and so many interesting bits and bobs! HA! I wouldn't want to get my William Hill's mixed up!! Oh! The Kintsuki vid on Sunday seemed like a good idea until it took a week to film! lol We've been so busy! Thank you so much, best wishes, Nicole & Craig xo

Your little pot with the holes on the top is actually a little piece of a desk set. It a pounce pot . They would put powder of some kind in it to help dry the ink when writing a letter.
@scottishmudlarking
@scottishmudlarking Год назад
Thank you so much! It certainly looks similar, though it looks a little more like a 'sprinkle' or 'dusting' jar, for sugar etc. which tend to have this convex top surface. Pounce pots tend to have a concave surface on the top to allow overpoured pounce to be returned to the pot so it can be used again... also, the dump is a little late for it to, most likely, be a pounce pot. We cover ID tips for pounce pots in another video - we know another channel tends ID things in the most exotic way possible, but we tend to draw on Craig's training as an anthropologist, a material culture specialist and former museum studies lecturer as our guide. That doesn't always reach the same kind of shock value, but does focus on the accepted forms of identification and comparisons with authenticated objects to help ID and define many of the things we find... Having said all of that, we could be wrong. Best wishes, Nicole & Craig xo

im not 100% sure but that milk glass with the holes in it..i think... is part of a writing set.... you have the pens/quills....then bottled inks...then this... which i think would be like a writing powder to "set" the ink and make sure it didnt run all over the paper and for it to dry faster so it could be folded and sent off or stored...like documents /contracts/letters//etc... i am soo much loving this whole bottle dumping you never know what you can come across and it varies so even more exciting;];];];] keep it up!!!!!

I have seen other UK channels refer to 36:04 a pouncer used to contain your pounce -for setting your ink on your freshly quilled letter. I know pounce was a thing but I can not attest to this utilitarian looking container sitting on desk. I would be more inclined to see it holding a starch powder in the kitchen for dusting pastry or thickening stews. Please let us know how you might verify an actual use for an object. Often an object starts life in one capacity and over the years it gets picked up and moved to a different room with a new purpose. I can say at our home things from my kitchen often end up living in the garden shed or garage, from whence they are not permitted to return. Great finds today. Off to the new channel I go.
@scottishmudlarking
@scottishmudlarking 2 года назад
That's such an interesting comment - thank you! It may well be a pounce - we were not sure as most have a saucer/concave shaped top - but not all do and some look similar. As you say though, the decoration and style of this one... leaves questions! Great question - sometimes authentification can be a very tricky thing. Craig has studied museum anthropology and knows how easy it can be for untrained eyes to get it wrong. In an instance like this, we would always defer to an expert for the final say - a curator of same period piece. Oh! what you say about things moving into the shed - haha! yes, we have more than a few items in our shed that started life in the kitchen! haha! Hope you enjoy the new channel! Sunday's should be a lot of fun with the Kintsuki Spongeware piece! :D Thank you so much, best wishes, Nicole & Craig xo

Beautiful location and was the little white find a pounce pot? Sand to dry pen ink on letters?
@scottishmudlarking
@scottishmudlarking 2 года назад
Thank you so much... To be 100% honest, we're not entirely sure if it is a pounce pot or a sugar shaker - the top is more typical of a sugar shaker, because its convex - commonly pounce pots are concave, to allow pounce to be poured back into the top, but, that's not a completely reliable way to id these things. So, we are not sure and it may be either - we found the same ambivalence in a few museum and auction site descriptions of similar items, all listed as "pounce pot/sugar shaker". Either way, its a lovely piece - wish we'd found the rest of it so we could say for sure what it is. Best wishes, Nicole & Craig xo

I think the white “tea pot lid” is actually a pounce pot. Part of a pen and ink desk set. Anyone else agree???
@scottishmudlarking
@scottishmudlarking 2 года назад
Pounce pots mostly had concave tops - it's more likely this was part of a cruet set , probably a salt shaker... Would be great to find an actual pounce pot!

Could the china [sugar sifter] be part of a desk set pounce pot for sprinkling sand on wet ink?
@scottishmudlarking
@scottishmudlarking 2 года назад
Thank you so much! :D It could be, but we have doubts about that based on the shape of the top - typically a pounce pot will have a concave top - saucer shaped - so that excess pounce could be poured back in... That's not to say this isn't, just that it is more typical of a culinary shaker than a pounce pot. Without any markings or other parts to confirm exactly what it is, we just can't know - that's why you'll see many auction houses advertising a "pounce pot/sugar shaker", because the object cannot be confirmed as either. Museum collections generally feature concave items as pounce pots and items like this as shakers. Some ETSY sellers have salt shakers advertised as pounce pots - so Craig's museum anthropology background leads him to be cautious about identifying objects like this. Best wishes, Nicole & Craig xo

I think you should investigate adding your logo brand to smooth side jam jars via stencil or decal. You could then sell them or give some away to expand your brand. Think both channels on each jar. Does this make sense to other viewers???? Please comment!

For spider´s webs you need a macro lens for close up stuff, or micro, can´t remember, love where you are, beautiful wooded area, are there fairy folk?, Do you get them in Scotland? And do you believe in them? I do, Elves , and witches, cool.
@scottishmudlarking
@scottishmudlarking 2 года назад
Yes indeed - we've been looking at lenses... window shopping really! The type you mention would be really useful for getting in really close on interesting finds and for craft making too! Oh! This place is so quiet - its far from any roads, but filled with birdsong and that magical feeling of being 'elsewhere'! :D We have a strong tradition of fae folk in Scotland and many sites where they are said to dwell! I love the fact that in Iceland, some places are protected by law because they are Elf havens... and in Ireland, where some places are just too dangerous to visit... Its less pronounced in Scotland, but, as an anthropologist, I'd have to say, yes, they are very real, especially where their presence is noted and where people make an effort to care for or avoid them - and they certainly do that in Scotland. Thank you so much and very best wishes, Nicole & Craig xo

I don't think that's a Tea Strainer I think that's a powder thing and you put a cork in the bottom and after you write a letter you sprinkle the powder on it and then blow it off and let it dry keeps your ink from smearing if not it looks like it... For writing letters
