If you've visited Rosehill Cemetery in Chicago, you've likely noticed this glassed masterpiece-the memorial of Frances Pearce Stone and her infant daughter Frances A. Pearce Stone. Born in 1835 and 1853, respectively, and both passing away in 1854, the monument was designed and carved by Chauncey
B. Ives in 1856 while he was living and working in Rome, Italy.
Frances's husband, Horatio Odell Stone, had a glass covering added, which remains today, preserving this beautiful sculpture from the unpredictable weather.
The tale unfolds with Mr. Stone, a prosperous real estate manager and philanthropist in Chicago.
In 1852 he married Frances M. Pearce and soon welcomed their daughter, Frances A. Pearce Stone.
Unfortunately, just 8 months after the joyous birth of their child, Mrs. Stone passed away, and their infant daughter followed 2 months after.
The cause of their passing remains unclear, their records were burned in the great fire of 1871.
However, the artworks portraying them are breathtaking. You can see the woman's head resting on two pillows, her left arm gracefully arched over her head while her baby girl lies by her side.
