When I was in the Army (US), I bought and carried the Pioneer because I didn’t know the Farmer existed. The inclusion of the wood saw makes the Farmer the ultimate bushcraft knife, in my opinion.
This is the best review of the Farmer I've seen. My favorite pocket knife of all time. That saw is amazing and endlessly useful. Enjoying your channel.
The farmer is my favorite too. I bought my red alox one back in 1983. Much more recently I've got a farmer x alox. That has the scissors added to it and is also a favorite😊
I already have mine. Plus half a dozen of other victorinox models. I live near the swiss borders, i'm french but my grand-pa was from Switzerland. When i was in the french army, i used to have the Huntsman model (with saw and scissors) wich is also a fabulous pocket knife. Love them all.
I got put off of alox/aluminium scales for years after buying a modern folder with them on that slipped in your hand. I'm glad I eventually got a farmer though, you can keep a grip well enough. It's solid, well built, the extra chunky blade is great and it has a good outdoors tool set. Good stuff!
The awl will do heavy duty cutting jobs, like boxes, and cord. It can be opened one handed with practice, and will easily cut seat belts. The small screwdriver works on some Torx and Philips head screws as well an small slotted screws. The Saw is great on plastic and wood. I think this is the most versatile pocked knife I've had. Carried mine for many years now.
I have used an alox sided Victorinox kine for 12 years a soldier and then for a further 26 years in a laboratory and used it multiple times a day every day. you have made a very good choice of personal knife. It is far more practical and useable than the enormous tactical knives that are all over the internet. This leads me to why would an office worker or IT guy need a huge tactical knife.
Well done video! I'm already a die hard Cellidor Swiss Army knife user, but I'm tempted to try out an Alox model. Probably the Farmer. Thanks for sharing!
My pioneer has been part of my EDC and sometimes my only EDC for nearly a decade now. The build quality is astounding and you can always rely on these little pocket gems!
Great video! Great music! I love the farmer. I think all Swiss army knifes are stronger and sturdier than they look, especially the alox ones, it is amazing to know that it can serves well in every day use even when it comes to some kind of heavy duty tasks. It doesn't look like it can be that sturdy and powerful from the outside but when you get to know it you will be surprised.
I’ve had an alox farmer on my Amazon wish list for about a year but didn’t think I could justify the near double price of the hiker (which I have 3 of already) I didn’t realise they were so much more robust. Think you may just have justified the purchase for me. 😇🏴
Excellent, enjoyed your presentation. I have the silver and Copper also, they are just a brilliant little pocket pal. The other bonus is they dont scare people if you use it in public.
I love my Swissbianco Bushcrafter, which I bought after watching this video a couple years ago. I’m wondering now, what is the brand of your wrench? I’m needing something to keep with me at work, but I can’t find anything of any quality in such a compact size.
Say Heah, Two of my Fav's Vic's are my Farmer, and the Victorinox Collection Ranger 78. I use the 78 basically as my back-up to some of my knives I use in a Trio Carry, my Farmer is my go to when I go Lite on my Afternoon Delight's. Usually my Lite Carry Mora 2000, Mora Hatchet and my Bacho Lsplander. Yeah, that Farmer is a good one. Dilly Dilly.,,.p
I really hate you mate. I allready have an farmer that i love, but after watching this I bought another one in green. My wife is going to explode...im going to blame you. Thanks though, awsome review. Cheers from Scandinavia
I'm buying a Farmer in green as well (after having lost two Farmers on different trips). I can't live without my Alox scale knives. I'll buy a Pioneer X as well because scissors are a must have.
The Farmer is one of the Pioneer (Soldier) models. Love it. My favorite is the Pioneer X. Large scissors in place of the saw. If the Farmer is the country cousin the Pioneer X is the urban partner. Perfect EDC.
Good point I bought the farmer but later found the farmer X, with scissors, so had to buy that. It seems to cover all bases. This is getting addictive. 😂
@@greenman7126 Agree…the Farmer X Alox with BOTH the saw and scissors, the heavy awl located on the end & large gauge main blade…is the ideal SAK. Then again I have an Evo 17 in both the yellow and the wood handle scales that find their way into my pocket pretty often. But if I could only have one it would be the Alox Farmer X.
Nice review! Alox knives are amazing: they are very robust and look very good. Especially the colored ones - although the color wears off over time. But worn Alox looks good too. :) One useful thing that I you haven't mentioned or shown I believe: the reamer is an excellent striker for ferro rods.
Yeah, I heard that from many people but I prefer the reamer. I guess it also depends on your technique and the type of ferro rod, but I tried mine with the saw and it did not work as well as with the reamer. Even the can opener worked better for me (and I found it safer). But maybe it's just me... Regarding sharpness: my ferro rod is probably a softer one, but the reamer remained sharp after quite a few strikes - but sometimes I sharpen my reamer just like the blade, so I don't really try to save the edge.
for people using the Farmer as a multitool alongside another knife I'd recommend upgrading to the trailmaster/trekker as it works as a proper knife too
Years ago I lost a Farmer on a trip, so I replaced it months later and in 2019 I lost the new one on another trip. Pure bad luck! I really treasure my Swiss Army Knives and hardly ever lose stuff. The knives fell out of my pocket, it can happen. I'm hoping to buy a third Farmer (this time in green scales), in addition to a Pioneer X, which adds scissors.
I already have the spartan model in transparent silver which i always keep in my work bag. And i want to have another one to attach to my keys for STAT purpose and i think i will get this Farmer model. I need again to justify to my self why i need this one 😅 thank you for a great video!
Get the Swiss champ xavt your key chen that's what I've got on my key chen and then in the office i keep the leathman WAVE in my top poickit under my toy👔 and a more under my🎩 an allrand fantastic edc for the office and coming and going to the office
Great in-depth review, I’m 13 and my parents are very “over protective” can you give me advise on how to sell my parents on the idea of getting this knife. Thank you.
I love my Swissbianco Lumberjack, which I bought after watching this video a couple years ago. I’m wondering now, what is the brand of your wrench? I’m needing something to keep with me at work, but I can’t find anything of any quality in such a compact size.
the All new victorinox farmer x is BAD ASS it's just a fantastic allrandr edc love it o yea and I most not forget about the victorinox fieldmaster a Swiss army knife that has served me very well so I've got to give it a 10 out of 10 as well victorinox Swiss made to last
@@grouchygrizzly366 I think you got the jist of it I'm just calling how I see it I'm just a dumb Mainer what the hell do I know. I didn't even think anyone gave a shit but thank you griz at least I got you but I'm sticking with the statement I made. Putting a cresant wrench on the end of a Swiss army knife is still stupid
You forgot the wire stripper, place the wire in the notch on the flathead, move the flathead to the ninety degree position with the awl then pull the wire through
i have the pioneer, i too was gonna get the farmer...but the thing is, i would never use the saw....so what is the point.. ps a pioneer, and a rambler on keyring gives you small phillips and scissors and nail file which you may use occasionally . especially if you are a city dweller.. the pioneer is king of the knives for urban carry..lightweight small and cool...absolute zero nonsense. for outdoors field guys..i would say the farmer gets it.
With all those knives and multitools it is easy to be intoxicated and ending up having backward not ideal tools. Those are not yet touhght after in a complementary way. At home I'll have proper tools for doing things, like at work. On the move I'll have a locking blade, a Leatherman for the pliers wire cutter, AND a small cybertool somewhere, etc. When do those companies like Victorinox and Leatherman start to think "complement" and "compatibility" ? The small blade on a swiss army knife is way more used than the big one. A tool should split, most of the time you need 2 to pry open, to tighten or unscrew some bolts. I agree this farmer is good for what it is, but I won't be able to go out without my main blade and a saw even on the 130mm gardener will always be sub par vs a ... saw. On the swiss army knife I would replace main blade by something more useful, just an example. The screwdriver/scraper, the owl, the can opener, all are amazing. it would be a nice complement to have a victorinox classic or a nail clipper as a complement with plastic scales to have the tweesers. (see how often you slide a wood chip under the skin ...) And then there is bulk : even at home and at work, there are always cases where I will prefer those small multitools to the proper tools, because of lacking space, or special cases. So those are not gagets, those are real.
Better than the small Vic pliers - which are good don't get me wrong but they have limitations - is to carry the Farmer or another SAK with Knipex Cobra XS pliers.
Ummm they're perfectly normal steel pin rivets, absolutely NOT aerospace spec ! They're the same basic design as on iron ships in the 1800's. The old model liners are nickel silver and new manufacturing models from 2022 on have changed to aluminum.
