Wild edible warning. DO NOT EAT ANY WILD EDIBLE UNLESS 100% CERTAIN. Some guy on RU-vid doesn't count as certain knowledge. WARNING. Catching and cleaning of fish or game is shown. If seeing that is something you are not comfortable with this might not be for you. In this video we attempt to answer the age old question. Which knife, the Farmer or the Hiker is better for survival. Which one is best in a survival situation? To put these two fantastic knives to the test we scrounge up a bush meal using these tools for all the required steps.
Note as this was a comparison of both knives one of the tasks was to test out their ability to be used as a ferro rod striker This is why I used the small blade on the Hiker. However I later found out the back of the saw works great so clearly that's my recommendation for both. Here is a video on that. • Victorinox SAK Saw Fir...

Kevin inspired me in every video. He was very giving with his abundance of knowledge in woodcraft, and to this day I find an occasional video, like this one, that reminds me how unselfishly he lived out his passion, and never showed anything but kindness and cheerfulness. I for one, truly miss, the one, the only Mega Woods Walker. RIP Brother Kevin

Not a show-off disguising as instructor or product-reviewer, but just truly friendly and even funny. I learned a lot already from the two videos I’ve watched so far - about the SAK Farmer. I just ordered the Farmer today and am looking forward to using it as I start my adventure as a newbie in bushcraft and backwoods camping. Thank you, MegaWoodsWalker!!

My EDC SAK is the no longer made Outrider, which has locking blade. Very similar to the Trekker. The Huntsman is my favorite thou. And it saw blade actually saved my life when I was out in the wood and completely tore my patella tendon. That's a long story and for a different time. What I call my Gentleman's carry is the Climber. Everything of the Huntsman but the saw. That my going to the movies, dinner, church knife. I gave Farmers as groomsmen gifts at my weddings. .Nothing better than fresh trout for supper! As usual, great job.

MegaWoodswalker Important to keep the rod contact near the knife handle. The sharp corners of the saw back really whip up a big spark shower. I don't own a Farmer, but a point to add about alox knives is that for food prep gore doesn't get under the scales. So a plus for hygiene. Both great knives though !

I find the back of the saw on SAK a nice striker. On my SAK (forget the model name) there is enough of the saw back sticking above the other blades that it can be used to throw sparks even in the closed position.

Fantastic positive mental attitude, great skills, particularly liked the foraging. Looked very comfortable in your environment, that's a state of mind people undervalue, no use being in the woods if you're scared of getting your hands dirty. I gave up on magnesium bars many moons ago, even a slight breeze makes them difficult to use. Tricky doing a comparison of these knives if discounting the saws, they are incredibly useful. If you live in an area with blackberry bushes tweezers are incredibly useful. The thorns on last years bushes are rotting late winter/early spring and will infect cuts they make if not all the thorn is removed from the cut, so it's Hiker for me (well, I have the Camper, a Hiker with a corkscrew). Thanks for the vid!

Great video. Hope you enjoyed making it as much as I enjoyed watching it. I'd prefer the farmer. The reamer, as all the blades, are easier to use out the end as opposed to the middle, IMHO.

Goodnight Mr. Trout! 3:58 I think maybe the reamer on the Farmer could have also worked for dispatching the trout, if a short blade was needed. It does have an edge. But overall, the Hiker between the two seems better to me cause of having two blades, and also tweezers and toothpick. Just more to work with. The back edge of the saw blade also works for ferro rods, saving your sharp edges on the other tools. Both, the Hiker and the Farmer seem like great knives, but for outdoors use, I’d get the Camper over the Hiker for the corkscrew it adds. Works great for untying paracord knots and picking out wind knots and backlashes in fishing line.

Hey man ! Love ur vids ! You can also use the spine of the saw to strike the ferro rod.

Plan on getting the hiker, 1 big blade, small blade, and a saw really does it for me Update: When this was made I had to get the Camper because they didn’t have any hikers left where I went. I ended up losing that knife in a camping trip. A while later I got a Hiker and soon after that a Ranger. I can say I love them both and would recommend them to anyone.

Hi ! I’m curious - from your experience do you prefer to carry thinner (and lighter) knife like the Hiker/Camper or one that is thicker but has more tools like the Ranger? Also do you prefer having a cork screw or Phillips screwdriver on the back?

This was awesome. I wandered in here while debating a new pocket knife because the Wenger can opener on my cheap one is warped. I was researching Victronix equipped pocket knives. I was also glad to see the saw test. That is over looked by many reviewers, and yours appeared to cut like butter (another feature I seek). I do believe the video should have been entitled "Stoned in the Woods". Man, that looked like a blast. Great speckled trout and wild onion finds, along with the violet vegetation. But dude. Stoned in the wooooooooods. Brutally stoned in the woooooooddddssss. I'm teasing you because it was so awesome. I'll bet you had a fantastic time, it looked extra fun! Sorry to tease you. Overall, it was a great video and answered a lot of my question about SAK. Thanks :) - Aerows

Your are such a great inspiration to people! You look like you're having a great time! The knife info is first rate! I was totally captivated by the vid! So I watched it all the way through! We can tell your knowledge is vast and thanks for sharing some with us. Your TV show is WAY better than the OLD TV shows from television machine. ;-) I've only seen 1 show of yours, and I hope you've made more! The check is in the mail! I think you could test out all knives! And it wouldn't be boring in any way! You could just show how you cut with different blades. You don't even need to be out anywhere. Humans like to hear other humans talk. We just want to hear what you think about knives. Show us how to cut with the different blade patterns. Show us what happens when a knife is 'lost' in the woods. Etc... How to knot a hand strap from rope. Etc... Keep up the good work! You've created a more interesting life for us ALL!

I only had the time to watch the last 3 minutes now, so you might have mentioned this before... If you like the Farmer, take a look at teh Harvester or the Electrician plus. Those have a small blade (hawkbill / sheepsfoot) instead of the can opener. If you don't have canned food with you, I think those are perfect outdoor knives.
