From Victorinox re the steel: “The steel we use for all our Hunter Pro knives is from the group 1.4419, or known in the USA for AISI420. The DIN number is X38CrMo14.” So its 420, not 440! Sorry!
@jotabe1984

yep, the Steel is quite underperforming form what you could expect from a 440c (60 to 100 rope cuts give or take)

I use this as my hunting knife. Im surprised to see, how expensive they are. In Germany you can get that for 65-70€. Ive got the orange one, its great for when you throw it in the grass at night, i would never be able to find the black one again, if it would fall down while hunting. What i also like about this one, you can wash out blood very easily. Its not that easy with other victorinox hunting tools like the hunter xt, because the blood gets in every little space. The blade is very nice. It has the perfect size, so you can lay your finger on the tip of the blade, so you dont cut the organs, when cutting open a deer. And its tough enough, so that you dont have to worry about it while cutting through the rips or the Schloß( i dont know if theres a word for it in english, its between the back legs of an animal). For my purposes it stays sharp long enough. O also carry the Victorinox dual sharpener, its a great tool that makes your knive sharp again very easily. The handle could be a bit larger for my big hands, and i like the soft touch material. It has a good grip when its wet or bloody. I never had problems with the back lock, its strong like a fixed knife, but the finish gets off very easy. Thats a bit sad, but it doesnt affect the useability, so i can get over that

Awesome comment - good to hear from someone who uses it for its intended role. Yes, I can only imagine how thoroughly mucky a victorinox layered SAK style knife would get once some entrails have been on it! Pinned comment for everyones benefit :)

In my opinion, if it wasn't for the price (because 60$ is ridiculous for 440c is ridiculous), this would be an excellent knife, it looks like it has nice ergos and a great blade shape for hunting.

I've found this knife by accident at a small nautical equipment shop, and bought it because i "drowned" my trusty old Boker. Anyways, there is not a single problem with this knife except the lack of a lanyard hole, which is a little bit annoying. As a sailor and skipper, i always need a trusty knife to go with me, and i use a knife at least 20 times a day. This has so far proven to be a very good choice (by pure luck). The best part of the knife is the simplicity of it, the knife does not look menacing and "tactical" which is great, the handle is the most ergonomical one i have ever handled, the knife is quite light and very strong. Sure, the blade steel is not some supersteel, but whoever doesn't want to buy a knife because it's not built with supersteel is usually just someone that never really needed it for actual use, rather show it around, being careful it doesn't get scratched. Peace!

I own many knives and have one of these and it's a really good knife and I've never had a lock failure and there is no wiggle at all when it is open mine has a pocket clip and aluminum scales it's a solid knife.Spydercos and Benchmade are double the price but do offer upgraded steel.

I was also quite put off by the lock strength. It actually came with a really nice razor sharp v edge type situation. The bad convexing was just me a) first learning how to sharpen on a wetstone and b) me not being bothered to sharpen a knife i dont you and just over strop it😂

A good cryo for 440C makes a great difference. From HRC 56-57 to 57-58. Keep in mind the hardness scale is exponential so 58 is almost 10x harder than 57. My friend uses 440C and you would think his knives were made of CM-154 because of how good he does the heat treat. He quenches in a hot 100C oil, air cools and then wipes and does a quick 100C temper before the cryo in LN.

The lock is strong--not crappy at all. I have had mine for almost two years. Tight. All I can say is that for Americans there are too many other knives as good or similar for much less. But, prices are higher in other countries. VAT (value added or sales tax) is part of the problem. Plus the extra layer of shipping and handling cost, and maybe duty. In Israel, we do not have the selection of good folders that Americans have. Victorinox Hunter Pro is about $90, walnut handle a little bit more. But we're more like to have only a few knives, and keep them for ever. Nobody worries about paying $5 or $10 or $20 more than Americans. If a knife is good, and I pay 30% more than a Yank, so be it. But indeed in America you have a large selection at much low price than the Vic Hunter Pro. For woodwork, walking stick making, barking branches, taking off small branches, etc. it has been a comfortable knife. No rusting, and I live a few hundred meters from the Mediterranean. -Cheers!

As an earlier poster commented: I am reminded of the Gerber gator with this knife. I admittedly have had a long time affection for the Gerber Gator & Victorinox knives( have had both since the 70's & 80's) although for the money I think I would choose the fine edged Gator over this knife. I believe the recent incarnation of the Gerber Gator is in CPM 154 steel & still made in Oregon, USA. It also has a very comfortable, form fitting sticky hard rubber handle probably not unlike this Victorinox Hunter Pro. Appreciated the review of a less exotic, everyman's knife. Cheers from Canada.

The matte finish, as explained by a Victorinox rep, is so it doesn’t catch the light and spook what you’re hunting. Doesn’t seem like a super practical modification, but that’s what the man said.

EKA 88 has been a popular choice for hunters here in sweden for a couple of decades. More recently, by far the most popular hunting knife is the EKA Swingblade. Mora 2000 is another popular choice. To me, this victorinox just looks like a knife, I cant see why it would be exceptional as a hunting knife. In fact, it seems to have qualities that you wouldnt want on a good hunting knife, like the fact that its very pointy, typically you would want a rounded blade for skinning/flaying because it allows you to use the knife at an angle without damaging the meat. The only thing I can think of is that removable scales is more sanitary, but if thats a concern you should be looking at a fixed blade instead.

@Marshall Kinnaird IF you can FIND it at Walmart, nowadays. All they ever have at Walmart now are the crappy china made blades by Buck. The 110 is still my preferred EDC pocket blade. Tough as hell, but I can never find it anywhere for the old $35 pricepoint. They're always $95 or more on amazon or ebay, and about the same at Bucks website, now. Sucks.
@brucelaborin2124

@Marshall Kinnaird All 110's are USA made. But alll I ever find are the other niche cheap blades by Buck at Walmart. The non-110-124 blades.

@Marshall Kinnaird No I haven't tried the new LT's but I have a Buck Chairman 110 from 2016 or 2017 and it works like the regular bucks. The last regular Buck 110 I was able to buy at Walmart was back in 2013. Compared to that my chairman works the same, and is the same quality. I looked into some of the new LT's and the blade is still supposed to be the same. Just different handle material, but made in USA. I may try one someday, but I love my chairman. Aside from that I'm now carrying my new Victorinox Hunter Pro Red. I love it too. It feels solid like the Buck 110's.

Hmmm, why is it that the higher end 440C knives tested do like 75 passes on the rope and the Victorinox only does 57 ? The Lionsteel Mini does 77 cuts and the Kizlyar Hero does 75 before dulling. My hunting knife is made from Bohler N695 steel which is basically a high quality 440C and it also maintains very good edge. I'm curious why the Victorinox 440C performs so poorly.

I would presume bead blasting is a lot cheaper than a nice polished blade. Not to meantion a polished blade would looks s bit strange on such a utilitarian looking blade. Why 440c? Because it's generic, better than standard victorinox steel, and in general, at least where I live, hunters don't care about blade steel. If anything being able to put and edge back on a blade quickly is more advantageous than a super steel that for your average Joe would be near impossible.

This feels like a pretty wierd experiment from Victorinox. Not a great design, not great materials and not cheap. The orange version was featured on The Martian though :D I honestly don't get the idea of folding sheath knives as a whole. All the drawbacks of a fixed blade without almost any of the advantages.

I'm typing, because, I'm speechless. A hundred bucks for a 440C knife, in this day and age, is tantamount to robbery. Not that 440C is a bad steel, it is not. The fact that this knife steel is used mainly in the budget knife arena has everything to do with why paying a hundred bucks for it is robbery. People wanting a well made knife in 440C need to take a serious look at Ganzo's offerings. They do an excellent job of heat treating this steel, and, put it in very well made folders. The fact that Ganzo knive's rarely exceed $28.00 US makes them high value/low cost knives. Victorinox should be ashamed of themselves for ridiculously over pricing this knife. Anyway, well done look at the knife, and, you have quite the informative channel here!

By the time American knives are priced overseas, they are not such bargains. The Swiss made Hunter Pro is not so laden with tariffs as US knives are. After two years my Hunter Pro is holding up well. No blade play, no rust, and no lock fail. Victorinox heat treatment makes their 440C punch above its weight. The big issue is that the US market is awash in decent cheap knives AND all kinds of more expensive ones. I think there will be little chance for this knife in the North American market. Also not appealing to the couch-commando market. Thankfully no pocket clip--messy for dressing an animal.
