My grandpa always carried a classic SAK and he got me a serrated Trekker about a year before he passed away. I carry it daily and the only thing i changed was the keyring. I got rid of it for a paracord keychain with another larger ring on the other side. Makes a comfortable grip and you never know when youd need cord or bendable metal

My Uncle was cutting wood across his lap like that during a camping trip. In front of me, he slipped and the knife ran down into his lap and missed his femoral artery by about 1/2 inch. From that day forward I whittle and cut side side saddle.

I've carried my fat Swiss Officer model now for right at 30 years. Still going strong. And I agree, their saw is one of the best to be had. And living in the desert, I really like the magnifying glass on my model. While it can start a fire, it's really great for finding those oh soooo tiny, cactus "fur" spines when embedded in one's finger or hand. Victorinox...top quality, always. However...none of the "tools" in my Officers model lock and like you. I love locking blades, etc. Thanks Bryan.

Thanks for the review Bryan! I wondered how good this was as a woods/camp blade, but now I think it would make a pretty good EDC knife. I actually like their reversal of the positioning of the serrations and fine edge - makes WAY more sense to me, at least for wood carving purposes.

A year or so later I gave it to a buddy who re-enlisted in the SEAL Teams. Glad I have it to him as he got some real world use out of it and has given me many things over the years. @Arenpat

+Vida Salvaje On this german page (www.mein-taschenmesser.de/produktberater/glossar/stahl-victorinox/) it's said, that they use 1.4110 steel (in Germany like 440A), which is a nice steel in my opinion. Maybe there are better ones but on a SAM it works really well. In addition it comes really sharp out of the box. :)

Say Heah Brian, I love mine, I have the Victorinox Delemont Collection Ranger Grip 78, The 79 has the Corkscrew instead of the Phillips. But the Corckscreww you can use to untangle paracoard. I actually use the Awl alot in the bush. I also got a large pouch that I can belt carry it. The pouch coincidentally is army green so it really fits in my new Ultra Carry Trio for my Afternoon Delights which is a hot cup of coffee on the open fire and a baked potato, I teamed my Mora 2000, my Mora Hatchet and the Bacho Laplander which I can carry all of them in my Haversack, The 2000 I belt carry it on person and the rest in my Haversack that I made from a Far Mine Camo Foldover, It's just perfect for what I needed. At first I carried a more robust belt knife like my Bokor Black Vox Rold, and not only did it match with its handle color, But after using the Mora 2000 with the other tools, I just carry the Lite Trio plus the other C's in the Havedasack. But when I Scout some unfamiliar area's, I take a more Robust Trio. yeah that Vic Trekker is awesome. is that the Victorinox Delemont Collection Ranger Grip 78 ?
@SurvivalOnPurpose

+paulie 4x Just a regular Trekker
@paulie4x1

Yeah, It's very similar to my Victorninox Delemont Collection Ranger Grip 78 except the color, The screw driver also locks when depressed. but the main blade and the saw are around 4" the style of the blade is the same, It locks too and has a button on the side of the handle that you depress to unlock it to close it, yeah, it's a good size.

I believe the non serrated version of this has been discontinued. Rather than pay an additional $35 for another RangerGrip (which is also an excellent knife), I went ahead and bought the Trekker in serrated and reprofiled the blade. This is one of my top picks (within Victorinox). Non-serrated near the handle is best if you're going to have serration at all. I prefer completely non-serrated, so there's at least one edge I can keep sharp in what is really not a dependable knife for outdoors, no matter what the SAK model. I don't recommend an SAK even as backup outdoors, I'd rather have some $8 Morakniv. Cos if your main knife is lost or dulled, what you need is a backup edge, not anything they put in SAKs.

I've got an older Forester, which is the same knife except it's not OH opening and it has a corkscrew instead of a Philips ..and I recently bought a soldier, which is the same except it has grippy handles with no toothpick and tweezers and only comes in serrated. I hate serrations but I'd heard good things about the grippy handles and wanted to try them. Let me tell you those grippy handles are way better than the standard resin handles. If you dont mind losing the toothpick and tweezers, definitely get a grip version of this knife. On the issue of serrations, I hate them - or I did until I got this knife. This is how you do serrations right. They cut through anything fibrous like a laser beam and putting them on the end of the blade rather than by the handle, is just genius. If I was buying again, I would definitely get the serrated version over the plain edge. In other words, get the Soldier version.

That's why I brought the Vic. For my personal chopper I brought my 24" Council Pack Axe with heavy sheath and sling, and my Silky Bigboy 2000 with sheath. and ofcourve my Kodiak Gearsling. I still concider this to be a managable carry and using it in alot of snow proves it to me. I really like it. What's the difference between your Vic. Trekker and a Vic. I wish I had bought the regular blade instead of the half serrated. I think the One Handed Trekker and the Soldiers Knife are the same except for the scales. And maybe the Trail Master too.

I got a surplus Swiss trekker from the German army for $25. It looks new and has the German emblem not the Swiss. It also has a non serated blade and no toothpick or tweezer.

Just found this vid. I've been looking at this knife for a while. Thanks for the review. Oh, your link goes to a non-one-handed trekker. But Amazon does have this knife.

Well, bummer about the link. I'll try to fix it. Thanks.

That's OK. Easy enough to find it and I guess just getting to Amazon through your link works for the whole session at Amazon.

I'm not one for serrated blades. I have a special one only for emergency or defense by CRKT with VEFF serrations with a double guard which I need. However if I were to buy a knife with serrations this likely would be a top consideration.

i have the One-Hand Trekker and the steel seem kind of cheap so i would not put to much pressure on the blade... and i know Victorinox has been using this steel for a long time but it dose not seem like a great steel and it not very thick ..its not a Hard uses blade it more like a back up blade..but this would make a great knife for light tasks around camp...
@SurvivalOnPurpose
@SurvivalOnPurpose 5 лет назад
I think the steel is excellent. I guess it depends on your definition of "hard use". It's not a full tang fixed blade

I bought this knife (serrated) and loved it, but couldn't live with it. Biggest downside is the two-handed blade closing operation. No pocket clip sucked, but I'm sure there's a mod somewhere to fix that. And, thumb holes are not my preference, but I was getting used it. However, the two-handed closing operation just irritated me to no end. I really hope Victoronox fixes that.

It doesn't bother me in the woods. Kind of forces me to slow down and enjoy the experience of using a well made tool.

next time you're in the fishing section of a store get a big brass snap swivel, the kind for big catfish fishing or saltwater fishing. tie your bank line on it and snap the swivel onto the lanyard ring and the lanyard to your belt, that way if you want to remove the lanyard just unsnap it. the swivel is small enough that it isn't uncomfortable in the pocket, but strong enough to secure the knife.
@SurvivalOnPurpose
@SurvivalOnPurpose 9 лет назад
Good idea. I just tie a loop and use a larks head.

I don't own many SAK's but do own a reg Trekker. I'm very pleased with it except for the bit of up/down blade play when the blade is deployed/locked. In regards to tool stock thickness and frame strength, would you say that the 111mm Vics are substantially stronger/more robust than the 93's, 91's, and 84's? Is each size increase stronger than the one before it?

I would assume so.

That would be nice, but really when you're using a saw your pressure is against the hinge it anyway. A lot would be nice for scraping a ferro Rod

@@SurvivalOnPurpose ,yes an the gut saw is not pointed on the end so not puncture while cleaning the animal or fish,which I think is a neat design an they also have the rescue tool thst you an replace blades an the window punch when they dull,kinda experience but worth it if you use it at least once to help someone, my buddy had one back when I use to be a volunteer firefighter.

you could have taken it and seen how good it was balanced and THROWN it at that tree behind you! and then dropped it from two meters see if broke, and then dropped it off the second floor deck open into a kettle full of water and see if it closes up! :-) Thanks nice video!
