The Chinese women's volleyball team returned to Beijing on Monday after overpowering hosts Japan 3-1 to win their fourth women's volleyball World Cup title on Sunday evening.
Hundreds of Chinese volleyball fans gathered at Beijing International Airport, holding a whole host of placards, banners, and flowers and cheering loudly to celebrate the arrival of the new champions.
The Chinese team, led by highly-regarded coach Jenny Lang Ping, crushed a tenacious Japanese side 25-17, 22-25, 25-21, 25-22 to claim China's first World Cup crown since 2003 and first major title since 2004 when the team won Olympic gold in Athens.
"Fans warmly received us. I think this is out of their deep love for the old generation of the women's volleyball team and out of the happiness to see us winning the world title after so many years. I think we fulfilled their expectations," said team member Zhu Ting.
"I think (winning the title) helps us build confidence, but there is still large room for us to make improvement. We will continue to train hard and strive for even better results," added Yuan Xinyue, another winning team member.
Lang and her team now have the opportunity of repeating the feat in next year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
As a player, "Iron Hammer" Lang Ping led the Chinese team to the 1981 and 1985 World Cup titles.
